A man has been arrested after gardai seized a handgun and ammunition in the Smithfield area of Dublin 7 yesterday evening.
Gardaí from the Bridewell Community Response Team 'while conducting proactive foot patrols' searched an individual in Smithfield Square on Friday at approximately 5.50pm.
'During the course of the search, gardaí recovered a handgun and a quantity of ammunition,' a Garda spokesperson said.

'The individual, a male in his 50s, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda station in the Dublin region under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.'
According to gardai, the firearm has now been forwarded to the Garda Technical Bureau for ballistic examination while investigations are 'ongoing'.
