IIT Delhi to train Bihar engineers in AI-based bridge design and health monitoring

The Bihar government has announced a major step towards modernising infrastructure safety by launching an AI-driven bridge training programme for its with IIT Delhi, the Road Construction Department (RCD) will begin a six-month certification course in September than 100 government engineers will undergo training to use drones, sensors and artificial intelligence tools for bridge design, monitoring and The initiative is part of the newly approved Bihar State Bridge Management & Maintenance Policy, 2025, which aims to strengthen in-house technical expertise while reducing reliance on external TRAINING MODULESThe curriculum will focus on cutting-edge modules such as computing Bridge Health Index (BHI) scores through AI and machine learning analysis of drone and sensor will also be trained in real-time monitoring using strain gauges and tilt meters. Another key component includes applying algorithm-based Maintenance Priority Index (MPI) models for repair and rehabilitation DESIGN CELL TO BE ESTABLISHEDIn addition to training, the government will establish a Bridge Design Cell under Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL).The facility will be responsible for designing bridges, culverts and retaining walls within the state. Officials estimate that this step could save more than Rs 65 crore annually and cut down on project government is also in discussions with the Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE) to introduce more specialised training in road and bridge structures, creating a pool of highly skilled AND IMPLEMENTATIONThe Bihar State Bridge Management and Maintenance Policy, 2025 makes it compulsory to use drone inspections for all state-maintained bridges. This approach is expected to provide accurate assessments and help prioritise maintenance work Public Works Minister Nitin Nabin underlined the importance of the move, saying, 'The future of infrastructure lies in technology and self-reliance.'ROLL-OUT IN 2025-26Deployment of the trained engineers will begin in the financial year 2025-26. As part of the implementation, 85 bridges will undergo real-time monitoring, audited jointly by IIT Delhi and IIT combining skill development, technology, and data-driven monitoring, Bihar hopes to build a more resilient and safer bridge network across the state.- EndsMust Watch

Bihar ties up with IIT Delhi to train engineers in AI-powered bridge design and monitoring

In a major initiative to make its roads and bridges safer while also improving the technical expertise of its engineers, Bihar's Road Construction Department (RCD) has partnered with IIT Delhi to launch a six-month certification programme in AI-driven bridge design, monitoring and maintenance. Over 100 government engineers will undergo training to use drones, sensors and AI tools for assessing bridge health. The programme, starting in September 2025, is part of the recently approved Bihar State Bridge Management & Maintenance Policy, 2025. It aims to cut reliance on private consultants, strengthen in-house skills, and ensure long-term safety of bridges across the state. Over 100 government engineers will undergo training to use drones, sensors and AI tools for assessing bridge health. Education Ministry offers 5 free Artificial Intelligence courses on SWAYAM Modules will cover: Computing Bridge Health Index (BHI) scores through AI/ML analysis of drone and sensor data Real-time monitoring using strain gauges and tilt meters Applying algorithm-based Maintenance Priority Index (MPI) models for efficient repair planning The policy also mandates drone inspections for all state-maintained bridges. Alongside training, the government will establish a Bridge Design Cell under Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL). This in-house facility will design bridges, culverts and retaining walls, potentially saving the state over ₹65 crore annually and reducing project delays. Discussions are also underway with the Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE) to design additional training programmes in road and bridge structures, creating a pool of specialised engineers. NEET-MDS 2025 cut-offs lowered: NBEMS announces revised qualifying scores 'The future of infrastructure lies in technology and self-reliance,' said Bihar Public Works Minister Nitin Nabin. Deployment of trained engineers will begin in 2025–26 with real-time monitoring of 85 bridges audited by IIT Delhi and IIT Patna, as per a press statement issued on Friday. Calicut University Result 2025 declared for 2nd and 4th Semester exams
