Family and friends gather for Cole Cooper's funeral as tragic teen laid to rest

Mourners were asked to wear blue for the funeral which started with a minute's silence outside the Bridge Inn in Bonnyrigg. Mourners have gathered today to say a final farewell to tragic teenager Cole Cooper who was laid to rest. ‌ The 19-year-old was missing for five weeks after he disappeared from Longcroft, near Falkirk, on May 7. A large-scale search was launched with specialist teams, including a police helicopter, drones and officers from the dive and marine unit joining the effort. ‌ His body was discovered in woodland near Kilsyth Road, Banknock, on June 6, sparking grief across the community. ‌ Family and friends were asked to wear blue for the funeral which started with a minute silence outside the Bridge Inn in Bonnyrigg. The funeral procession then moved on to St Joseph's RC Church in Bonnybridge before ending at Stirlingshire Crematorium. Hundreds of mourners attended the service with members of the public also standing near the church paying their respects. The hearse pulled into the church grounds with flowers saying 'Cole, 'Son' and 'Brother' resting against the coffin. Cole's mum Wendy Stewart wore a blue jacket for the funeral and was seen being comforted by some of those who attended the service. ‌ On Friday, Wendy paid a moving tribute to her 'handsome darling son." She wrote: "My Handsome Darling Son, I write this with emotion that cannot be explained or expressed. You have been taken away from us for whatever reason I do not know or understand. ‌ "We will have our final goodbye, I just hope and pray that you are around us in every way. I am missing your cheeky smile, funny laugh and your charm. Life won't be the same without you. I love you so so much and miss you so so much each and every day. That will never change. Fly high my handsome darling boy, until I meet you again, love, hugs n kisses, love you loads." His aunt, Aimee Tennie, took to social media to share the family's wishes and to thank everyone who has stood by them during this devastating time. ‌ Aimee added: "We are deeply grateful for the continued support we have received from you all throughout this horrifying time. "For everyone that has followed Cole's story, for those whom his story has touched the hearts of, for those who have shared, liked and commented during his disappearance, for those that attended his searches, for those who provided us with information, for those who may have known Cole, and for his friends. We would be honoured to have you all there." ‌ She said that there were still "many unanswered questions" during an "incredibly difficult" time. She added: "Although incredibly heart-breaking and unfair this has been for Cole, we want this to be a celebration of his life. Forever 19 and he had forever to go." She said that his family wanted his funeral to celebrate his 19 years and show his "funny, charming, and loving" personality. It comes as his heartbroken family has lodged a formal complaint with Police Scotland' s Professional Standards Department, alleging a 'lack of urgency or seriousness' in the search for Cole despite 'high-risk indicators'. They say they were left 'isolated' and 'uninformed' during the ordeal, claiming the response 'bordered on negligence.'

Sandiacre pub closes for £317k revamp in Heineken multimillion pound investment

Sandiacre pub The Bridge Inn has closed for a £317,000 upgrade - reopening in time for its 90th anniversary celebrations in June. The investment by Heineken-owned Star Pubs aims to create a quality family and dog-friendly local with the largest beer garden in the area. Work will get underway on May 6 at the pub just over the Derbyshire border in Longmoor Lane. The interior will be redecorated from top-to-toe with new furniture, soft furnishings, feature wallpaper, carpets and lighting to make it brighter, welcoming and more comfortable. Seating is being increased to 106, with customers able to choose to sit at high tables and chairs or at lower booth-style seating. The games area will have a new pool table, halo darts board, Heineken neon signage, and two HDTVs showing live Sky and TNT sports, while a further two TVs will be located in the bar. The drinks selection will have something for every time of day, from coffee and soft drinks to craft beer, cask ale and cocktail. Publicans Leigh Brunson and Louise Mason, who have running the pub as temporary managers since December 2020, will be staying on. A landmark pub for both of them, the Bridge Inn was the family local of Sandiacre-born Leigh's family and the first pub he worked in. Louise, who has lived in Sandiacre for the last 25 years, started work at the pub in 2016, becoming an assistant manager in 2017. She said: "The Bridge Inn will offer the same elements as before such as pool, live sports, darts, a monthly quiz, and regular charity fundraisers, but in much nicer surroundings. There will also be an improved drinks range and a new menu. "Leigh and I are really excited by the refurbishment as it will boost the growing popularity of this lovely community pub. The investment will create a safe, fun, and good-looking pub for all customers to enjoy. "We can't wait to open the doors in June, welcome regulars back and new faces, and celebrate the pub's anniversary with a family fun day including gift and sweet stalls, a lucky dip and bouncy castle.' Adella Binney, Star Pubs' business development manager added: 'We're delighted to be investing in the Bridge Inn taking it to the next level. The new look and new offer are a great way to mark the pub's 90th anniversary and will I believe broaden the pub's appeal and delight regulars, some of whom have been coming to the pub for over 40 years." The refurbishment coincides with Heineken's announcement that it is investing £3.1m in East Midlands' pubs. Licensees are expected to invest £153,000 on top, resulting in an estimated 69 new jobs. Of that, £467,000 is earmarked for Nottinghamshire pubs and £1.38m in Derbyshire, plus an additional £61k from licensees. Although trading conditions have been tough over recent years, Heineken UK said it has invested consistently throughout, pumping £194m into improving its pubs between 2020 and 2024. The latest investment has been hailed a "resounding vote of confidence" in the future of the sector. Lawson Mountstevens, Star Pubs' managing director said: 'Consistent investment – rather than a stop, start approach – and a strategy of creating great locals have been key to helping our pubs weather the storms of the last few years. Even with pressures on disposable income, people in the East Midlands are still prioritising a trip to their local, valuing it as an everyday treat and as a way of connecting with their community. "But they want to be guaranteed a quality experience: relaxing in an attractive setting is an important factor when pubgoers choose where to spend their money. Star Pubs' licensees employ some 25,000 people, support thousands of local suppliers and raise millions for charity. "Pubs are the lifeblood of their communities and growth engines for the UK economy, however, they are being penalised by a disproportionate tax burden. We urge the Government to rectify this distortion when proposals to overhaul business rates are drawn up this year.'

Village pub near Edinburgh boasts stunning waterside beer garden

Ratho is home to the Bridge Inn, which is regularly included on lists of Scotland's best beer gardens. The recent bout of warm weather has lifted spirits and heightened anticipation for summer. And when the sun makes an appearance, there's only one place on everyone's mind – the beer garden. Outdoor drinking as soon as temperatures soar past 15C is a quintessentially British summertime ritual up there with beach days, cider at music festivals, and strawberries with cream during Wimbledon. Despite the often unpredictable Scottish weather, there's no shortage of options to choose from. ‌ For those in search of the perfect spot to spend a leisurely day, a village pub boasting a sizeable beer garden might just be the ticket. This is precisely what awaits in the quaint village of Ratho, a mere seven miles from Edinburgh. ‌ The Bridge Inn, nestled by the Union Canal as it meanders from Falkirk to Edinburgh, is frequently touted as one of Scotland's top beer gardens. It serves up traditional pub fare alongside seasonal specialties, complemented by an extensive range of wines, whiskies, cocktails, spirits, and beers. Touted as the "perfect place to watch the world go by," the Bridge Inn's beer garden operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no option for advance reservations. Despite its proximity to the city centre, Ratho retains the charm of a rural village, reports the Scottish Daily Express. Dating back to the 1200s, the historic heart of the village is a conservation area, home to numerous ancient buildings primarily constructed from whin stone sourced from a nearby quarry. The canal provides an idyllic setting for waterside walks, while those seeking more vigorous activities can head to the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho, which held the title of the world's largest when it opened its doors in 2003. ‌ Adjacent to the climbing centre is The Lost Shore Surf Resort, the globe's first inland surf resort. A mere six-minute drive away lies the breathtaking Jupiter Artland Sculpture Park, exhibiting outdoor pieces by renowned sculptors and artists. The Lost Shore Surf Resort just a five-minute drive away. ‌ Ratho enjoys a strategic location near the junction where the M8 and M9 motorways intersect, and is only a few miles from Edinburgh Airport. The city centre is a convenient 30-minute drive away. Despite being a rural village, Ratho is part of City of Edinburgh Council. It used to be part of Midlothian. At the 2011 census the population was just over 1,600 people. ‌ Ratho was named one of the top 10 villages in the UK for travellers to visit. It was awarded the status by TripAdvisor and has been described by residents as a "sleepy retreat". But locals said they were surprised to hear that the village had been given the award because they feel like they're living in a "forgotten Community" due to the lack of transport links.
