NRL fans rocked as Knights young gun's horror injury set to rule him out for season

Newcastle Knights superstar Fletcher Sharpe has been joined by his family in Perth after he suffered a ruptured spleen and lacerated kidney in what could be a season-ending injury during his side's win. Sharpe has been a revelation for the Knights in 2025 having moved from the wing to five-eighth. The five-eighth has been a bright spark in what has been a poor season for the Knights in attack having scored 11 tries in 14 games. Although just as the Knights have managed to string a couple of solid performances together it appears the 21-year-old could miss the remainder of the season after a horror injury in Perth. Sharpe left the field during the win against the Dolphins for a HIA assessment after a heavy fall when he made a break down the field. However, it appears more damage was done to his abdomen having landed awkwardly on his elbow and damaging his spleen and kidney. 'NRL Physio' Brien Seeney claimed it would have been deemed a 'medical emergency' after such a serious injury with the 21-year-old taken to hospital for surgery. Sharpe has remained in Perth hospital since the incident and the club have flown his family over to be by his side. Fletcher appears to be recovering well, but will remain in Perth for the time being. While plenty remains unknown about Sharpe's injury, Seeney suggested it could be the end of the star's season with his recovery important after such a scary incident. Fans were left stunned at the injury, which appeared to happen during a routine tackle. There is a chance he doesn't play again this him the very best in his recovery - a reminder of the brutal nature of rugby league. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) June 23, 2025 Rest up Fletch get well soon champion — Brendan Moore (@moorey81) June 23, 2025 🤯 poor Fletcher. That's absolutely horrendous. I hope he's doing ok. — Nicole Hegedus (@nicole_hegedus) June 23, 2025 The Knights will now turn to either Jackson Hastings or Tyson Gamble to fill in for Sharpe in the halves. Coach Adam O'Brien has preferred Gamble throughout the season with Hastings only making his one appearance in 2025 against the Roosters two weeks ago with the Knights missing a host of stars. The injury comes at a horrible time for the team with the side set to host the Canberra Raiders this weekend. Unfortunately, the Knights were not the only team in Perth to lose a player for the season. Dolphins winger Jack Bostock went down clutching at his leg during the clash and is set to miss the season. Having just his form, scoring four tries against North Queensland the previous weekend, Bostock emerged after half-time with ice on his knee and in a brace. "I am really disappointed for him," Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf said after the game. "He's had a great season and is a terrific young man and I know he has the resilience to get through it." The Dolphins have had a horror run of season-ending injuries in 2025 with forwards Tom Gilbert, Daniel Saifiti and Max Plath, along with the continued absence of prop Thomas Flegler with a shoulder nerve complaint since April last year.
