NRL fans rocked as Knights young gun's horror injury set to rule him out for season
Newcastle Knights superstar Fletcher Sharpe has been joined by his family in Perth after he suffered a ruptured spleen and lacerated kidney in what could be a season-ending injury during his side's win. Sharpe has been a revelation for the Knights in 2025 having moved from the wing to five-eighth.
The five-eighth has been a bright spark in what has been a poor season for the Knights in attack having scored 11 tries in 14 games. Although just as the Knights have managed to string a couple of solid performances together it appears the 21-year-old could miss the remainder of the season after a horror injury in Perth.
Sharpe left the field during the win against the Dolphins for a HIA assessment after a heavy fall when he made a break down the field. However, it appears more damage was done to his abdomen having landed awkwardly on his elbow and damaging his spleen and kidney.
'NRL Physio' Brien Seeney claimed it would have been deemed a 'medical emergency' after such a serious injury with the 21-year-old taken to hospital for surgery. Sharpe has remained in Perth hospital since the incident and the club have flown his family over to be by his side.
Fletcher appears to be recovering well, but will remain in Perth for the time being. While plenty remains unknown about Sharpe's injury, Seeney suggested it could be the end of the star's season with his recovery important after such a scary incident. Fans were left stunned at the injury, which appeared to happen during a routine tackle.
There is a chance he doesn't play again this season.Wish him the very best in his recovery - a reminder of the brutal nature of rugby league.

🤯 poor Fletcher. That's absolutely horrendous. I hope he's doing ok.

The Knights will now turn to either Jackson Hastings or Tyson Gamble to fill in for Sharpe in the halves. Coach Adam O'Brien has preferred Gamble throughout the season with Hastings only making his one appearance in 2025 against the Roosters two weeks ago with the Knights missing a host of stars.
The injury comes at a horrible time for the team with the side set to host the Canberra Raiders this weekend. Unfortunately, the Knights were not the only team in Perth to lose a player for the season. Dolphins winger Jack Bostock went down clutching at his leg during the clash and is set to miss the season.

On a night of injuries, Bostock ruptured his ACL rupture in the Perth match, which will see him miss up to nine months of action. Having just his form, scoring four tries against North Queensland the previous weekend, Bostock emerged after half-time with ice on his knee and in a brace.
"I am really disappointed for him," Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf said after the game. "He's had a great season and is a terrific young man and I know he has the resilience to get through it."
The Dolphins have had a horror run of season-ending injuries in 2025 with forwards Tom Gilbert, Daniel Saifiti and Max Plath, along with the continued absence of prop Thomas Flegler with a shoulder nerve complaint since April last year.

Major boost for Broncos and Queensland after big development around veteran playmaker
Ben Hunt could have one game to impress Queensland coach Billy Slater before the Maroons' Game 3 squad is announced, with the veteran gunning to return early from injury in a major boost for the Broncos. Hunt has been sidelined since round 10 with a hamstring injury but is reportedly in line to make his NRL comeback in Saturday's crunch home clash against the Warriors. reports that Hunt will undergo a series of fitness tests on his troublesome hamstring and looks set to be named in coach Michael Maguire's 22-man squad on Tuesday if he comes through them unscathed. The Broncos coach confirmed to the publication that the veteran playmaker is progressing well, but insisted they would not take any risks with the 35-year-old if he is not right. ''Hunty' is doing well,' Maguire told The Courier Mail. 'We have just got to make sure the old boy is 100 per cent ready to go." The Broncos jumped to fifth on the ladder after their impressive come-from-behind win against Cronulla in round 16, and will come up against a fourth-placed Warriors side desperate to atone for their shock loss to a depleted Penrith. If Hunt does prove his fitness, it could give Maguire his first look at what most believe to be Brisbane's first-choice spine. Fullback Reece Walsh is starting to hit form after returning from injury, while Ezra Mam has slotted back into the halves alongside Adam Reynolds after serving his nine-game ban. Hunt would be expected to complete the star-studded quartet by shifting to hooker. It's a role the veteran has performed well at rep level for the Maroons and Kangaroos, and would give Brisbane another creative outlet in attack and much needed big-game experience. Billy Walters and Cory Paix have battled for the No.9 jersey at Brisbane this season but one of them will almost certainly drop out when Hunt returns. RELATED: Teammate axed as Manly reveal backflip around Turbo switch Devastating blow for Knights as young gun could miss rest of season State of Origin player floated for immediate NRL club switch Maguire is optimistic that Hunt will be fit enough to face the Warriors on Saturday, but could hold off on his return until the following Friday when they play the ladder-leading Bulldogs. But with Slater set to name his Maroons squad for the Origin decider after this weekend's games, Hunt will be desperate to feature against the Warriors and press his claims for a Queensland recall. Hunt has been Slater's preferred No.9 in previous Origin series, working in tandem with Harry Grant in a dual-hooker role for Queensland. In fact, the Maroons' Game 2 victory in Perth was the first time in five games that they'd won with the Storm superstar starting at hooker. Grant was immense for the Maroons in Game 2 with a whopping 55 tackles and a try assist in Perth, where he showed that Slater might not need another hooker after playing the full 80 minutes. Kurt Mann also impressed in his 36-minute stint that included a try assist, 19 tackles and three tackle breaks from his 35 running metres. Mann injected plenty of energy off the bench for Queensland but would seem the man most likely to make way if Hunt were to earn an Origin recall. And with the series on the line in enemy territory, Hunt's experience on the big stage could give Slater a major decision to make, if he makes a successful return for Brisbane this weekend.

Ghostbuster Paro clears path to legacy-defining rematch
A validated Liam Paro is eyeing bigger targets, claiming he won't "chase ghosts" and fight George Kambosos Jnr. The Australian is instead intent on a rematch with their conqueror Richardson Hitchins, ideally for multiple belts, as he prepares to fight on home soil for the first time in nearly three years. The Mackay product (25-1) will headline Wednesday's boxing card in Cairns against the dangerous Jonathan Navarro (18-1). America's Jonathan Navarro is from a big fighting family, lost count of how many amateur titles he won and was brought to the pros by Oscar de la $12 outsider is confident of causing a big Aussie boxing boilover tomorrow #ParoNavarro MORE 👉 — MAIN EVENT (@MainEventTV) June 23, 2025 Caboolture's two-time world title challenger Liam Wilson (15-3) will also feature against Argentinian super featherweight Ayrton Gimenez (22-1) as he eyes a rematch with Emanuel Navarrete after his controversial Arizona loss two years ago. Paro upset Subriel Matias in Puerto Rico to win the IBF's super lightweight title last June and, when a homecoming bout with Kambosos Jnr didn't eventuate, was forced to return there and defend his belt against Hitchins in December. The Brooklyn star won a split decision contest and then, as forecast by Paro, obliterated Kambosos Jnr in New York City in his first defence earlier this month. "I copped heat for saying George would lose, but I stand by it," Paro said. "I just never thought Kambosos was world class. That's not unpatriotic, it's just my opinion as someone who knows what that level really looks like. "There are levels to this game and I've shared the ring with the elite and I call it how I see it." Kambosos is 2-4 since upsetting Teofimo Lopez in 2021 but has retained a top-four IBF ranking alongside Paro, who is also well positioned for shots at the WBC and WBO belts. "I doubt it happens," Paro said of fighting his countryman. "I think ego gets in the way. He's made it clear he won't fight another Aussie, which says a lot. "But if we're both seen as one and two in the country, there's only one way to settle it. "If it ever makes sense, I'm all in. I'll fight anyone, anywhere but I won't chase ghosts." Lopez currently owns the WBO strap and is on Paro's hit list that includes Ryan Garcia, Rolando Romero and Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz. "People underestimate what Liam brings to the table,' No Limit boss George Rose said. "He's tough, smart, and marketable as hell. "He's doing it without shortcuts, without ducking anyone, and that's why the biggest names are going to have to deal with him eventually. "This is the beginning of something huge." Paro's last win in Australia was a devastating first-round stoppage of Brock Jarvis that launched him towards his first title shot while signed to Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing. "I had to defend my world title overseas under my last promoter when I should've been celebrating it in Australia," Paro said. "So this one's for my Aussie fans and Queenslanders. And next time I want to be back here again, but with a world title on the line. "I'm not here for easy fights or padded comebacks. You look at what Tim Tszyu's doing ... he's back in a mega-fight and rematch with (Sebastian) Fundora. "That's the blueprint and that's what I'm chasing too. "I'm not asking for a (Hitchins) rematch just to tick a box. "I want a belt in my hands before we run it back. And when we do, I want it to be a unification. That's the goal. That's how legacies are built."
