Major boost for Broncos and Queensland after big development around veteran playmaker

Major boost for Broncos and Queensland after big development around veteran playmaker

Yahoo5 hours ago

Ben Hunt could have one game to impress Queensland coach Billy Slater before the Maroons' Game 3 squad is announced, with the veteran gunning to return early from injury in a major boost for the Broncos. Hunt has been sidelined since round 10 with a hamstring injury but is reportedly in line to make his NRL comeback in Saturday's crunch home clash against the Warriors.
reports that Hunt will undergo a series of fitness tests on his troublesome hamstring and looks set to be named in coach Michael Maguire's 22-man squad on Tuesday if he comes through them unscathed. The Broncos coach confirmed to the publication that the veteran playmaker is progressing well, but insisted they would not take any risks with the 35-year-old if he is not right.
''Hunty' is doing well,' Maguire told The Courier Mail. 'We have just got to make sure the old boy is 100 per cent ready to go." The Broncos jumped to fifth on the ladder after their impressive come-from-behind win against Cronulla in round 16, and will come up against a fourth-placed Warriors side desperate to atone for their shock loss to a depleted Penrith.
If Hunt does prove his fitness, it could give Maguire his first look at what most believe to be Brisbane's first-choice spine. Fullback Reece Walsh is starting to hit form after returning from injury, while Ezra Mam has slotted back into the halves alongside Adam Reynolds after serving his nine-game ban. Hunt would be expected to complete the star-studded quartet by shifting to hooker.
It's a role the veteran has performed well at rep level for the Maroons and Kangaroos, and would give Brisbane another creative outlet in attack and much needed big-game experience. Billy Walters and Cory Paix have battled for the No.9 jersey at Brisbane this season but one of them will almost certainly drop out when Hunt returns.

Maguire is optimistic that Hunt will be fit enough to face the Warriors on Saturday, but could hold off on his return until the following Friday when they play the ladder-leading Bulldogs. But with Slater set to name his Maroons squad for the Origin decider after this weekend's games, Hunt will be desperate to feature against the Warriors and press his claims for a Queensland recall.
Hunt has been Slater's preferred No.9 in previous Origin series, working in tandem with Harry Grant in a dual-hooker role for Queensland. In fact, the Maroons' Game 2 victory in Perth was the first time in five games that they'd won with the Storm superstar starting at hooker.
Grant was immense for the Maroons in Game 2 with a whopping 55 tackles and a try assist in Perth, where he showed that Slater might not need another hooker after playing the full 80 minutes. Kurt Mann also impressed in his 36-minute stint that included a try assist, 19 tackles and three tackle breaks from his 35 running metres.
Mann injected plenty of energy off the bench for Queensland but would seem the man most likely to make way if Hunt were to earn an Origin recall. And with the series on the line in enemy territory, Hunt's experience on the big stage could give Slater a major decision to make, if he makes a successful return for Brisbane this weekend.

‘On track': Positive pics for Kerr return

Sam Kerr won't be playing for the Matildas over the next two weeks but has linked up with her teammates in Perth as an injury lay-off that has hit 18 months edges closer to an end. Kerr dropped social media pics of her running during a trip to Mallorca in Spain and followed that up with another pic at the Sam Kerr Football Centre in Perth where her national teammates are preparing for games against Slovenia and Panama. The 31-year-old hasn't played since injuring her ACL in a training camp with club side Chelsea in January 2024. New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro recently revealed that the Matildas captain needed a second round of surgery, which stretched her recovery way beyond the normal period. But while she is doing most of her rehabilitation with Chelsea, Kerr has been allowed to link up with the Matildas who will play their first game under the new coach on Thursday night. She's set to take part in some individual sessions and do some training with her teammates as part of a plan being co-ordinated in collaboration with Chelsea. When Kerr wasn't named in Montemurro's 33-player squad for the four games in Western Australia, the new coach said he'd been talking to his skipper and things were moving in a 'positive way'. 'We're monitoring that on a day-to-day, week-to-week scenario. She's on track and we're working closely with Chelsea to make sure she's ready for the season going in from there,' he said. 'Everything's pointing in a positive way and going in the direction we feel that's right.' Recently married Matildas star Ellie Carpenter said it was exciting times for the team with a new coach leading into next year's Asian Cup, which is being held in Australia. 'You could tell by today's first session that everyone's fresh, everyone's excited,' she said in Perth. 'Everyone wants to put their best foot forward. That creates a challenging environment, very competitive environment and I think that's what we need.' 'I think Joe's very experienced internationally, he's coached at some big clubs, he knows what it takes to be the best footballers, to train them, to also beat top teams. 'And I think bringing his style here to the national team, keeping the ball, playing possession-based football is really going to bring the best out of our team, and it's what we need leading into the Asian Cup.' The Matildas will open their Asian Cup campaign in Perth on March 1 next year.

New PNG franchise will offer NRL players a ‘permanent holiday', says Peter V'landys

Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter Vlandys says players will enjoy life in PNG if they sign for the NRL expansion club. Photograph:Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter V'landys has claimed players 'and their wives' will be on a 'permanent holiday' when the Papua New Guinea expansion side makes its scheduled NRL entrance in 2028, and promised 'resort-style' accommodation attractive to the talent required to be competitive in the club's first season. The rugby league tsar has assured PNG prime minister James Marape the team will make the top eight in its first year in 2028, a deadline which V'landys said was 'absolutely' going to be met. Advertisement Related: Lucrative tax breaks will be 'vital' in PNG team's bid to attract top NRL players 'We've looked at some sites today for the accommodation, we've looked at the centre of excellence, and we're very impressed with what's available,' he said on Tuesday at the announcement of the new club's board. 'We're going to make this a resort-style area for our players and their wives, so they're going to be on a permanent holiday when they're over, except when they play and train. 'Otherwise, they're going to take the natural beauty of Papua New Guinea in and enjoy it because it's a beautiful country, and they will enjoy it in a resort style.' Advertisement The board of the new franchise is made up of former Canterbury chairman Ray Dibb, former Kumul Marcus Bai and Wapu Sonk, the managing director of Kumul Petroleum who was chairman of the bid, which received the green light in December. Digicel executive Lorna McPherson, Mayur Resources chair Richard Pegum, chair of the QRL's PNG Hunters and food and beverage industry veteran Stan Joyce and Ian Tarutia, president of the PNG Chamber of Commerce & Industry, fill the other positions. 'Most of them are residents of Papua New Guinea, they know the business sector here, they know the ecosystems here, we're very confident in their ability to deliver and I think they'll be very competitive in the very first year,' V'landys said. The franchise is being partly funded by a $600m, 10-year commitment from the Australian government to rugby league in PNG and the Pacific. The PNG government is also making financial contributions in the form of infrastructure investment and tax concessions. Advertisement V'landys said there was a clause in the deal allowing it to be terminated 'if there's a termination of the security agreement' between the two countries. Pacific Island affairs minister, Pat Conroy, said Australia was 'incredibly reassured' by statements from PNG about its security intentions and a new defence treaty is being negotiated that would expand on the existing bilateral security agreement. 'The security future of both countries is entwined together very closely,' he said. Marape said the countries had shared interests. 'We're not far apart, we're close by, at the moment we're working on a bilateral security treaty with Australia that will take precedence over any other security relationships,' he said. The new franchise is able to sign players for a 2028 start from the end of next season, and is expected to target high-profile players such as Melbourne Storm and Queensland Origin winger Xavier Coates, who was born in Port Moresby.

Warriors GM Reveals 'Top Priority' Heading Into Offseason

Warriors GM Reveals 'Top Priority' Heading Into Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NBA enters the offseason, one team that could end up having a very busy summer is the Golden State Warriors as they try to upgrade their roster and chase a title next season. Advertisement Golden State is coming off an interesting season that saw them turn things around at the trade deadline after acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. With their new star trio of Stephen Curry, Butler and Draymond Green, the Warriors were able to finish seventh in the Western Conference and make it to the second round of the playoffs before they were eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Of course, the main storyline for Golden State entering the offseason is the upcoming free agency of young forward Jonathan Kuminga, who will be a restricted free agent. Advertisement On Monday, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said that resolving Kuminga's future is a 'main priority heading into free agency' according to NBC Bay Area's Dalton Johnson. Kuminga had an interesting season with the Warriors as he fell out of Steve Kerr's rotation completely at the end of the season before he was reinserted in the playoffs after injuries to both Butler and Curry. During the 47 games he played last season, the 22-year-old averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 30.5% from three. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr talks to forward Jonathan Terada-Imagn Images With Kuminga's role in Golden State uncertain heading into next season, the young forward could end up being on the move this summer if the Warriors choose to find a sign-and-trade scenario for him. Advertisement While that is the likely option for Kuminga heading into the offseason, it appears as though the Warriors are still keeping their options open about possibly bringing back Kuminga on a long-term deal, though his role next to Butler is still uncertain heading into the 2025-26 season.
