Horse racing tips: Thursday, May 29
There's a good card at Sandown this evening featuring two Group 3 and two Listed races, and our resident expert racing tipster has picked out a couple of tips from the Surrey course. Ron Wood's selections: Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 7.35 Sandown – Brigadier Gerard Stakes (Group 3, 1m 2f) This is a good race and of the 10 who line up there looks like being more to come from ALMAQAM (NAP), who is taken to prove best. This Ed Walker-trained four-year-old won the Listed Heron Stakes on the same card last year and he shaped nicely back at Sandown on his reappearance, finishing third in the Gordon Richards Stakes, another Group 3 race. Almaqam was one place behind Ancient Wisdom, whom he meets again now, but he might have beaten that rival had he had more room to challenge and not been conceding race-fitness to him. The selection is a big horse who should come on for that run and he is expected to progress on his already smart level this term. Selection: Almaqam @ 9/4 with William Hill 6.35 Sandown – National Stakes (Listed, 5f) CLEAR FORCE has decent form by early season two-year-old standards, most recently running away with a novice race at Ripon. The runner-up that day, beaten 4½ lengths, won a Listed race next time. The selection is saddled by Karl Burke, who has trained the winner of this race twice since 2017, his only two runners in the race in that period. There's also First Legion to consider following his debut win at York, but he was passing tiring horses late on that day and this drop from 6f, even on a stiff track, isn't an obvious move. Selection: Clear Force @ 6/4 with William Hill Go to site > Today's racing (Flat unless stated) Yarmouth 2.10-5.20 Ripon 2.20-5.30 Lingfield 2.30-5.05 Limerick (NH) 5.10-8.12 Fairyhouse 5.25-8.30 Carlisle 5.50-8.50 Sandown 6.05-8.40 Ron Wood 2025 horse racing P/L Star ratings explained ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - confident selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - strong fancy ⭐⭐⭐ - fair claims ⭐⭐ - tentative choice ⭐ - minimum confidence If you want to find more odds and offers, take a look at our list of the best betting sites and free bets If you're looking for casino bonuses, we've ranked UK welcome offers here

Unbeaten Ombudsman has Brigadier Gerard starting point this season
Ombudsman, unbeaten in four outings as a three-year-old last season, could tee up a run at Royal Ascot in the Star Sports Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown on Thursday evening. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, he is owned by Godolphin and signed off last year by winning a Group Three in France. He will carry a penalty for that success on his comeback but Thady Gosden reports that this race has always been the plan ahead of a potential run in the Prince of Wales's Stakes. He said: 'Ombudsman has had a nice break over the winter and the plan has always been to come here followed then by hopefully a run at Royal Ascot, where he holds an entry in the Prince of Wales's Stakes. 'He is a horse that we have taken our time with and the Brigadier Gerard Stakes is a good spot to start his season off on. 'Although his Group Three win last year was on soft ground, he is relatively versatile when it comes to ground. Like most horses he wouldn't want extremes. 'He has been on target for this all spring and he has been training well. He has made good progress in his work this year. 'He seems in very good order with himself and hopefully this will bring him forward nicely.'

Gosden planning Royal Ascot curtain-raiser for Palladium
The Gleneagles colt has now switched to Clarehaven, where attentions are turned back to the Flat, with his new team thinking of a tilt at the Hardwicke Stakes at the Royal meeting. Palladium prior to his hurdling debut at Huntingdon (Joe Giddens/PA) 'He might run later in May and we will just see. Since he came to me I've just taken my time with him, building him up and there is no rush at all,' said Gosden, who trains the four-year-old alongside son Thady. 'He's a good looking, charming horse and a pleasure to have around. We'll be looking at the Harwicke with him, that's the sort of area we'll be looking at.' The Gosdens also have Royal Ascot in mind for Prince Of Wales's Stakes entrant Ombudsman. The son of Night Of Thunder impressed when going unbeaten at three and is poised to return at Sandown on May 29 in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. Smart performance! 💙 Defying greenness, @godolphin colt Ombudsman makes it four from four with a battling display under @WilliamBuickX in the Prix du Prince d'Orange! — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) September 8, 2024 'Hopefully Ombudsman will run in the Brigadier Gerard as a prep to move on to Royal Ascot,' continued Gosden. 'He's well in himself at the moment and interestingly the races for older horses over middle distances are all Ascot-onwards and there is nothing really before to suit. 'That is why we have deliberately planned to bring him out in late May and then on to Ascot. 'He's a talented colt who always appreciates a little bit of give in the ground and we're aiming for Sandown.'
