Suspect, victim killed in Brighton ‘violent crime spree' identified by coroner's office

DENVER (KDVR) — A man who was killed Saturday in what police described as a 'violent crime spree' and the suspect accused of killing him were identified by the Adams and Broomfield County Coroner's Office on Thursday. The spree involved incidents at three locations, with two of those incidents turning deadly. Police said the investigation began at about 8:44 a.m. after officers were informed of an assault in the 200 block of North 11th Avenue. There, police found the body of a 72-year-old man who has now been identified as Paul Richard Montoya. Teen victim identified in deadly shooting at RTD station in Greenwood Village A second incident, a car crash, was reported in the 4700 block of East 168th Avenue at about 9:37 a.m. involving the suspect's vehicle. A passerby who stopped to help anyone injured in the crash was carjacked at knifepoint by the suspect, police reported. The suspect fled the scene in a stolen Camaro. Multiple agencies then began searching for the stolen vehicle. At about 9:40 a.m., an Adams County sheriff's deputy saw the Camaro near East 160th Avenue and Washington Street in Thornton. Police said the suspect was at the home of someone related to both the victim and the suspect. On Thursday, the suspect was identified as Paul Richard Montoya Jr., 52. Deputies confronted the suspect at the home and said Montoya Jr. was armed at that point. When the suspect fired at officers, a deputy fired back and killed him. The deputy is under investigation by the Adams County Critical Incident Response Team to determine if any crime was committed by the law enforcement officer. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Brighton Police Department tip line at 303-655-8740. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
