‘What if he wasn't Brij Bhushan?' A wake-up call for men's rights in India

Barkha Trehan is an equal rights activist and a strong believer in gender-neutral society. She challenges gender-specific prejudices and stereotypes, advocating for equal justice for all genders within the legal system. Barkha firmly believes in the Indian Constitution, which guarantees rights to all genders without discrimination, and she actively works towards realizing this vision. Key Roles: - President, Purush Aayog - Social Activist - Media Personality - TEDx Speaker - Documentary Director- The Curse of Manhood - Director of the Short Film : One Sided Love • Josh Talk • Hindu Entrepreneur LESS ... MORE The POCSO case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was closed by a Delhi court. The case had triggered nationwide outrage and protests by wrestlers. Let's be clear: if the minor retracted her statement, closure was legally inevitable. But why was a man declared guilty in public even before trial? Why was due process discarded for TRPs and political brownie points? 'A man accused is a man destroyed even when acquitted.' Brij Bhushan had political clout, financial muscle, and visibility. He could fight back. But what about the aam purush the ordinary man with no platform, no resources? The salaried man falsely accused in marriage disputes, the young boy framed in college by a rejected proposal, the elderly father battling false domestic violence claims? 'When even powerful men get dragged, what hope does the powerless have?' This case proves that truth must be proved, not presumed. Gender cannot be the benchmark of credibility. 'Today it's Brij Bhushan. Tomorrow it could be your father, your brother, your son.' The damage is done. The POCSO case is closed, but the stigma, the vilification, and the career cost stay. The other harassment cases remain under tria if they too fall, who will return his reputation? India cannot continue this witch-hunt of men in the name of women empowerment. It's time to stop the misuse. It's time for a Men's Commission. It's time for equal rights. For real justice. Facebook Twitter Linkedin Email Disclaimer Views expressed above are the author's own.

Delhi Court Closes POCSO Case Against Former WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Singh

Last Updated: A Delhi court has accepted the cancellation report in the POCSO case against ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh after the complainant withdrew her statement. Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday accepted the cancellation report filed by Delhi Police in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case against ex-WFI chief and former MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Singh also appeared before the court as his cancellation report was accepted by Special Judge (POCSO) Gomati Manocha, while the complainant was also called to record and verify statements in the case. On May 17, the court had summoned the complainant wrestler, who had accused Brij Bhushan of sexual harassment when she was a minor. The Delhi Police had previously filed a cancellation report in June 2023 after the victim withdrew her statement. During court proceedings on August 1, 2023, the complainant and her father expressed satisfaction with the police investigation, and had not opposed the closure report in the case. Later, Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava informed the media that both the complainant and her father had appeared before the court, confirming their satisfaction with the police investigation and not challenging the cancellation report filed by the Delhi Police. The cancellation report was initially filed by the Delhi Police on June 15, 2023, in the POCSO case against Brij Bhushan. On July 4, the same year, the Patiala House Court issued a notice to the complainant and her father. In a related case, a charge sheet was filed in Rouse Avenue Court regarding sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan and Vinod Tomar. The court has ordered charges to be framed against both individuals, directing the trial to commence and statements from prosecution witnesses to be recorded. The proceedings were initiated against Singh and Tomar under Sections 354, 354A, and 354D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for sexual harassment, and against Tomar under Sections 109, 354, 354A, and 506 IPC. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a former BJP MP, has consistently rejected the allegations made against him by the wrestlers. First Published: May 27, 2025, 10:46 IST

Why wrestlers' harassment case against ex-BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh was cancelled?

A Delhi court has cancelled the POCSO case against ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh. Here's why the sensational case against the former BJP MP was quashed and whether the Uttar Pradesh politician is now completely free from all cases related to the wrestlers' harassment allegations. read more A Delhi court has cancelled the sexual harassment case filed against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and ex-BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh under the POCSO Act. The court has accepted the cancellation report submitted by Delhi police in a case filed by a female wrestler, who was a minor at the time of the alleged incident. What was the case about? In April 2023, the father of a minor girl wrestler filed a police complaint against Brij Bhushan Singh. He accused Singh of sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation. Since the girl was under 18 at the time, the case was registered under the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Why was the case cancelled? Both the minor and her father took back their statements in front of a magistrate months after filing the complaint. The father later admitted he had filed a false case because he was upset about the way his daughter was being treated in the sport. After this, the Delhi police filed a cancellation report in June 2023. The report said there was no solid evidence to support the minor's allegations. What did the police investigation find? According to PTI, over 20 witnesses were interviewed during the course of the investigation and call records were checked. Photos and videos from matches and events were also examined. The police could not find anything to prove the girl's claims and filed for the cancellation of the case. What did the court say? On 26 May 2025, the Delhi court accepted the cancellation report. Additional Sessions Judge Gomti Manocha said, 'Cancellation accepted.' Earlier, in August 2023, during a private court hearing, the minor had also told the judge that she had no objections to the Delhi police's report and was satisfied with the investigation. What about the other case against Brij Bhushan? Even though this case has been cancelled, Brij Bhushan still faces another serious case. Six senior women wrestlers have accused him of sexual harassment. That case is still ongoing. The court officially framed charges against him in May 2024. The court charged him under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354 (outraging modesty), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. Charges were also filed against co-accused Vinod Tomar, former assistant secretary of the WFI. Brij Bhushan was removed as WFI president following protests by top Indian wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik in 2023. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP did not give him a ticket. Instead, his son contested and won from his former constituency. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
