Bristol first responders, bystanders save 2 lives with CPR
BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — The Bristol Fire Department is highlighting the importance of learning CPR after first responders and trained bystanders saved two lives in less than a week. First responders were called to Colt State Park after someone went into cardiac arrest. Bristol Fire Chief Michael DeMello said bystanders and park ranger performed CPR and utilized an AED on that person prior to their arrival. 'By the time I got to the patient's side, that person already had a pulse,' DeMello said. The second incident happened just days later at a home in town, where CPR was also performed prior to first responders' arrival. 'By the time that person got to the hospital, they had regained consciousness,' DeMello continued. DeMello praised his first responders for their hard work, as well as those who jumped in to ensure a successful outcome. 'Those first few minutes are so critical,' DeMello said. 'We're hoping to see this become more commonplace, these success stories.' Bristol EMS Medical Director Joseph Lauro said learning CPR is easy and doesn't take long. 'You put your hands together and put your palm on top of the chest,' Lauro explained. 'If you're afraid of breaking ribs or anything, it's OK. It's a life-saving procedure. Keep your elbows locked and rock forward.' 'You can save somebody's life, somebody you don't even know,' he continued. 'How grateful would that person be?' DeMello said anyone interested in learning CPR can reach out to the Bristol Fire Department Monday through Friday. The American Red Cross also has a database of local CPR classes online for those who don't live in town. Download the and apps to get breaking news and weather alerts. Watch or with the new .
