Glenn Irwin banks valuable points at Donington: ‘It feels like a win'
Ray seemed to have the race in the bag after he pulled away at the start and opened a lead of around two seconds on his Raceways Yamaha. But Irwin had other ideas and the Northern Ireland man began to close the gap once he passed Scotsman Rory Skinner (Cheshire Mouldings Ducati). BSB title hopeful Irwin had forced his way into contention for his first victory of the season in the closing stages, but the 35-year-old lost time two laps from the end when he had to pull out of an overtaking move at the Fogarty Esses. Ray had some breathing space going onto the 20th and last lap, but Irwin reeled the 2022 champion back in again and looked poised to pounce until he got his Hager PBM Ducati sideways coming out of Fogarty's for the final time. Ray wrapped up a treble by 0.396s over the Carrickfergus man, who is 12 points behind his English rival after the first two rounds. Irwin had earlier finished third in the Sprint race after taking fourth on Saturday when he lost time because of rear tyre degradation. 'Honestly, I'm so happy and it feels like a win to bridge that gap in front of a packed Donington Park crowd and break the lap record, but hats off to Brad,' said Irwin, who set a new lap record in 1'26.832s on the 19th lap. 'I felt with four to go it was just going to be picking my moment, but he responded and that's what makes this championship so great, there's many top characters in it. 'The resilience to come back and do a 1'26.8 on lap 19 – I'm not too fussed about two points here and there at the minute at this time in the year. 'It's making the best of the job that we have and we're only going to grow.' Skinner finished third for the TAS Racing team on his Ducati. Andrew Irwin was seventh and 11th yesterday on the Honda Racing Fireblade, while fellow Northern Ireland rider Scott Swann (Send My Bag/IWR Honda) was 13th and 14th. Donegal's Rhys Irwin finished second in yesterday's British Supersport race on his Suzuki while Eugene McManus from Randalstown was fourth on the MMB Ducati ahead of reigning champion Jack Kennedy (Honda Racing UK). David Allingham claimed fifth on the SMS/Nicholl Oils BMW in the Superstock 1000 race. The third BSB round takes place at Snetterton from June 20-22. Meanwhile, Jonathan Rea was 10th in the World Superbike Superpole race on Sunday and 13th in Race 2 at Most in the Czech Republic. The Pata Maxus Yamaha rider, who earned his first points of the season with 10th in Saturday's race, missed the first three rounds of the year through injury before making his return at Cremona in Italy at the beginning of May. Rea received two long-lap penalties in Race 2 after he made contact with Ducati's Alvaro Bautista, who crashed into Xavi Vierge (HRC Honda). Rea managed to stay upright but Spaniards Bautista and Vierge's races were over, with Vierge taken to the medical centre with a suspected injury to his right ankle. 'In Race 2, unfortunately got caught up in a first turn race accident and served two long lap penalties,' said Rea. 'Alvaro and I committed to the same piece of tarmac and that accident impacted not just his race and Xavi Vierge, but also Alex Lowes who took evasive action, so sorry to them guys. 'Before that I was feeling really competitive on my R1 and battling in the top five – positions I haven't been used to for quite some time.' Reigning champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad) won the Superpole race from Nicolo Bulega ( Ducati), but Razgatlioglu's bid for a treble was later thwarted by Bulega, who pipped him to the win on the line by 0.027s in the final race of the weekend. Bulega leads Razgatlioglu by 29 points after five rounds, with Misano in Italy hosting round six from June 13-15. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Ducati) finished third in all three races over the weekend.
