'I was one row behind tragic riders in fatal crash - this is what happened at Oulton Park'
Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson passed away in tragic circumstances due to a devastating crash involving 11 riders at Oulton Park in Cheshire and one rider has now spoken out A racer involved in the devastating 11-bike crash that saw two British Superbike stars pass away, has spoken out on the chaos seconds before the horrifying incident. Morgan McLaren-Wood was among those injured as Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson died in the tragic scenes at Oulton Park. The first lap of the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race saw a chain reaction crash in which 11 riders fell from their bikes with Jenner and Richardson suffering fatal injuries. A further rider, Tom Tunstall, was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital and suffered a broken bone in his neck. And McLaren-Wood has now recounted what transpired ahead of him on the track. The New Zealand national detailed how it was impossible to escape the havoc in front. "I was maybe a row behind Shane and Owen, maybe five or six bikes behind them - maybe a bit more," McLaren-Wood told BBC Sport. "It was just chaos - there was nothing anyone could do. There were bikes everywhere. There was nowhere for anyone to go - it's such a tight track and there's not really any run-off on it either." He added: "I think there are always ways to improve in safety in elite sport. Maybe there were too many riders out there, I don't really know. I'm not a safety expert, but I think it was mostly a tragedy." McLaren-Wood has paid tribute to his countryman, Richardson following his tragic death aged just 29. Richardson had helped his fellow Kiwi settle in to life overseas. The Astro JJR Hippo Suzuki rider ran a joinery business alongside his racing career. He leaves behind his partner Hannah James and children, Maddie and Max. Paying tribute to his compatriot, McLaren-Wood said: "Shane was such a lovely guy. After every race he'd always have a chat back in the pits, he'd ask me how my race went, I'd ask about his and he'd give me advice on how to get better and where to improve. "He was such a loving dad. I can't imagine what they're going through right now, it's so sudden and unexpected." Jenner, 21, was riding for Rapid Honda when the crash happened on the exit from turn one, Old Hall corner, on the opening lap. The young Brit died due to a catastrophic head injury at the circuit's medical centre. From Crowborough in East Sussex, Jenner was in just his second year racing in The Supersport Championship. He was signed by Rapid Honda after becoming a superstock champion in 2020 and 2023, and winning last year's GP2 title with 18 wins out of 20 race finishes. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy McLaren-Wood, who escaped the crash with minor injuries, said in a post on social media: 'Struggling to find the words for what happened today. "Rest in peace, Shane and Owen. My heart goes out to both of their families during this heartbreaking time.'

Second tragic loss for girlfriend of Oulton Park superbikes rider
A 11-bike crash claimed the lives of British Supersport riders Shane Richardson and Owen Jenner—marking a second heartbreaking tragedy for Richardson's partner, Hannah James, who lost a previous boyfriend in a similar accident nine years ago. The partner of British Superbikes rider Shane Richardson, who died in a collision at Oulton Park, lost her previous boyfriend also in a motorcycling crash nine years ago, it has emerged. Tragedy struck the British motorcycle racing world on Monday when a horrific 11-bike crash at Oulton Park claimed the lives of two riders, including Shane Richardson, 29, of the Astro-JJR Hippo Suzuki team. The collision occurred during the opening lap of the British Supersport Championship at the Cheshire circuit, after one rider lost control at Turn One and was thrown into the path of other competitors, reports the Mirror. The resulting pile-up led to chaos on the track, with at least one bike catching fire. Emergency responders were quick to act, but the crash proved fatal for two competitors: Owen Jenner, 21, and Richardson, a New Zealand native and father of two. Jenner, a recently crowned 2024 British GP2 champion and Rapid Honda rider, was taken to the circuit's medical centre, where attempts to resuscitate him failed. He succumbed to what organisers described as a "catastrophic head injury." Richardson suffered severe chest injuries and was treated trackside before being transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital. He died en route. Richardson's partner, Hannah James—a former grid girl—has now endured a heartbreaking second loss. In a cruel twist of fate, she had previously lost another boyfriend, racer Billy Redmayne, in a separate incident in 2016. Redmayne, 25, was critically injured during the Oliver's Mount Spring Cup in North Yorkshire and later died in hospital with James and loved ones at his side. On Monday, a third rider, Tom Tunstall, 47, sustained serious back and abdominal injuries and was also transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital. Five others—Morgan McLaren-Wood, Carl Harris, Max Morgan, Cameron Hall, and Freddie Barnes—escaped with minor injuries. In a heartfelt message posted online, McLaren-Wood expressed the pain felt by many in the racing community: "Struggling to find the words for what happened today. Rest in peace, Shane and Owen. My heart goes out to both of their families during this heartbreaking time." Following the incident, the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board (MCRCB) and MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR) released a joint statement: "At the start of this afternoon's Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park, a chain-reaction crash involving 11 riders occurred exiting Turn One. The race was immediately stopped, and medical personnel were deployed. Due to the severity of the incident and ongoing medical intervention, the remainder of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship event was cancelled." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Kiwi rider's death revealed as second racing tragedy for partner
The death of New Zealand rider Shane Richardson after a 'catastrophic' 11-bike crash in the British Supersport Championship has been revealed as a second racing tragedy for his partner. The 29-year-old and Owen Jenner, 21, could not be saved after being caught up in a 'chain reaction incident' exiting the first turn of the first feature race of the 2025 season. Richardson died on his way to hospital while Jenner, after resuscitation attempts, died at the Oulton Park circuit medical centre. Richardson is survived by his partner Hannah and their two children Max and Maddie, with Hannah sharing a photo of the family following his death. Hannah previously lost a partner following a race crash in 2016. Billy Redmayne died in hospital on their two-year anniversary, days after suffering significant brain injuries in an accident in the Oliver's Mount Spring Cup in England. 'Myself and his family decided rather than prolong the inevitable, we would turn off his life support machine and donate whatever organs we could,' Hannah wrote at the time. 'A match was found for his liver and kidneys and his pancreas will be used for research. I am holding on to the fact that Billy died died doing what he loved, and that was the way he always wanted it. 'Today was our anniversary. Today was also the day that I lay in Billy's arms whilst he took his last breath. Saying goodbye to him was the hardest thing I have ever done.' Richardson's death came just two years after fellow Kiwi and friend Damon Rees died aged 28 following a short battle with illness while in England competing in the Supersport Championship. Kiwi riders paid tribute to Richardson on Monday. New Zealander Morgan McLaren-Wood was also hurt in the crash at Oulton Park but escaped with minor injuries.
