'I was one row behind tragic riders in fatal crash - this is what happened at Oulton Park'

Daily Mirror07-05-2025

Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson passed away in tragic circumstances due to a devastating crash involving 11 riders at Oulton Park in Cheshire and one rider has now spoken out
A racer involved in the devastating 11-bike crash that saw two British Superbike stars pass away, has spoken out on the chaos seconds before the horrifying incident. Morgan McLaren-Wood was among those injured as Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson died in the tragic scenes at Oulton Park.
The first lap of the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race saw a chain reaction crash in which 11 riders fell from their bikes with Jenner and Richardson suffering fatal injuries. A further rider, Tom Tunstall, was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital and suffered a broken bone in his neck.

And McLaren-Wood has now recounted what transpired ahead of him on the track. The New Zealand national detailed how it was impossible to escape the havoc in front.

"I was maybe a row behind Shane and Owen, maybe five or six bikes behind them - maybe a bit more," McLaren-Wood told BBC Sport.
"It was just chaos - there was nothing anyone could do. There were bikes everywhere. There was nowhere for anyone to go - it's such a tight track and there's not really any run-off on it either."
He added: "I think there are always ways to improve in safety in elite sport. Maybe there were too many riders out there, I don't really know. I'm not a safety expert, but I think it was mostly a tragedy."
McLaren-Wood has paid tribute to his countryman, Richardson following his tragic death aged just 29. Richardson had helped his fellow Kiwi settle in to life overseas.
The Astro JJR Hippo Suzuki rider ran a joinery business alongside his racing career. He leaves behind his partner Hannah James and children, Maddie and Max.

Paying tribute to his compatriot, McLaren-Wood said: "Shane was such a lovely guy. After every race he'd always have a chat back in the pits, he'd ask me how my race went, I'd ask about his and he'd give me advice on how to get better and where to improve.
"He was such a loving dad. I can't imagine what they're going through right now, it's so sudden and unexpected."
Jenner, 21, was riding for Rapid Honda when the crash happened on the exit from turn one, Old Hall corner, on the opening lap. The young Brit died due to a catastrophic head injury at the circuit's medical centre.
From Crowborough in East Sussex, Jenner was in just his second year racing in The Supersport Championship. He was signed by Rapid Honda after becoming a superstock champion in 2020 and 2023, and winning last year's GP2 title with 18 wins out of 20 race finishes.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy McLaren-Wood, who escaped the crash with minor injuries, said in a post on social media: 'Struggling to find the words for what happened today.
"Rest in peace, Shane and Owen. My heart goes out to both of their families during this heartbreaking time.'

UFC star Tom Aspinall makes bold claim about future amid Jon Jones fight delay

The Brit has seemingly given up on a fight with the undisputed heavyweight champion and is now hoping to stay active inside the cage this year Tom Aspinall has his sights set on a busy end to the year and has expressed his frustration over the delay in securing a fight with Jon Jones. The interim heavyweight champion has been out of action since his win over Curtis Blaydes last July and is eager to get back in the octagon. Despite a challenging year waiting for Jones - who secured the undisputed title by submitting Ciryl Gane in 2023 and defended it against Stipe Miocic last November - Aspinall is ready to move on. ‌ Jones has teased staying on for another fight, but Aspinall suspects he's hung up his gloves and is eyeing other opportunities. The Wigan warrior told TNT Sports: "I'm sick of talking about myself, I mean, I think it's pretty clear to see that Jon Jones has retired, he doesn't want to fight me. We wish Jon all the best in the future, of course, but we want this heavyweight division active. ‌ "We want to give these contenders a chance to fight, we wanna have a defending champion, don't we? Why is this division so stagnant all the time? Let's make the heavyweight division great again and have an active defending UFC heavyweight champion, let's move on. I'm ready to fight, I wanna get two fights in before the end of the year so that's what we're doing. We finally have some movement, Jones has had a great career, I respect him, we know what he's done... Have a good life, we move on." It seems as if Aspinall has fully moved on after stating that 'Bones' is retired. Earlier this week, when asked about the agreement by UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen on the Good Guy / Bad Guy podcast, the Brit said: "Nah man, Jon is retired. What are you talking about guys? "You guys don't follow Jon on social media? Me too [I don't follow him]. But the guy is living his best life. He's had a fantastic career, we all know. We know Jon's a religious man, so I want to say God bless him moving forward in what he does in his life and his career. "We move on. I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm ready to take on all comers, get this division moving again. Us guys have been waiting around too long, the contenders are getting sick of it, everybody is getting sick of it, even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. So Jon's retired and it's time that we move on." If Aspinall has in fact moved on, the UFC faces a challenging task in finding a suitable opponent for the British fighter. The most logical match-up for Aspinall at this point would be Gane - who narrowly won his last fight against Alexander Volkov in December via a split decision.

Mercedes 'stung' by George Russell and Kimi Antonelli's disastrous F1 run

George Russell managed 18 points while Kimi Antonelli drew a blank in all three rounds of the Imola, Monaco and Barcelona triple-header, as Mercedes lost ground in the championship A top Mercedes chief has admitted the team is feeling "pretty stung" by a triple header of Formula 1 races which brought little joy. The first three European races of the 2025 season were difficult for the Silver Arrows who managed to score just 18 points over three Sundays. All of them were amassed by George Russell, who saw his remarkably consistent start to the campaign slip. He qualified well at Imola but struggled for pace during the race and slipped down to seventh, his worst result of the campaign up to that point. ‌ Things got worse in Monaco as he suffered an engine issue in qualifying and, with overtaking impossible on the tight Monte Carlo streets, couldn't make it into the top 10. He did at least return to the top five in Barcelona, finishing the Spanish Grand Prix fourth despite being rammed by Max Verstappen. ‌ While 18 points would have been a disappointing return to the Brit, it's a number Kimi Antonelli would have loved to bring home. Instead, he failed to score a single point over the course of a hellish triple header for the F1 rookie. Sign up to our free weekly F1 newsletter, Pit Lane Chronicle, by entering your email address below so that every new edition lands straight in your inbox! He too qualified too low to have a chance of making the points in Monaco, and his 18th-placed finish there was sandwiched by two DNFs with Mercedes suffering reliability issues on that car. A throttle issue forced him to pull over at Imola, while his engine gave up in Spain because of an oil pressure problem. Reflecting on how the triple header went for the team, technical director James Allison said he and his colleagues had "mixed" feelings. He said: "I guess from Barcelona, there were aspects of the way we approached the weekend, of the performance of the car in very hot track conditions that give us some optimism for the future. "But we're all pretty stung by the DNFs and having been through a triple header where we didn't score at anything like the rate we did in the opening races of the year. So, hopefully, good looking forward, but I wouldn't want to do those three races again like that." ‌ Antonelli, 18, is in his first season on the F1 grid and team principal Toto Wolff has made it clear that it will be little more than a year of learning for a talent who Mercedes hope can go on to be a future superstar. But despite the lower expectations in his maiden campaign, Allison admitted the teenager has been affected by his difficult run. He said: "Kimi is young and full of all the optimism of youth, but I absolutely know that our failures in this period have taken a few chunks out of Kimi along the way. Two DNFs, one caused by a chassis problem, one caused by a PU problem in just three races – that's a pretty tough pill to swallow. "Leaving that aside, and Kimi looking in it himself, he will know that he's got more to find. But in amongst that, there's been a lot of very positive work with him and brilliant experience for him running on a very dynamic track like it was in Barcelona, with the track temperatures pushing up towards 50 degrees and managing soft tyres in those conditions. That is just putting experience into him at a very fast rate, and he was handling it pretty well."
