Steelers OTAs: Broderick Jones slimmed down 20lbs from 2024 — confident at switch to LT

Steelers OTAs: Broderick Jones slimmed down 20lbs from 2024 — confident at switch to LT Steelers OT Broderick Jones is ready for a Year 3 leap. One of the biggest stories surrounding the Steelers' offensive line heading into 2025 was who would take the left tackle and right tackle positions — and an answer was provided at OTAs. According to Jones, who struggled mightily in pass protection last season from RT, a switch to the left side of the offensive line is in order — his natural position. Moving from RT to LT isn't the only change in store for Jones, as the third-year offensive lineman also claimed that his weight is down 20 lbs from last season's 325 (courtesy of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette): "I wanted to come back a little leaner just because it gives me a chance to gain weight going into training camp and throughout the season — instead of coming back heavy and then having to lose weight just to gain it back. It's a hard process. I just wanted to focus on coming back at a good enough weight to where I can maintain, but also gain if I have to," Jones told reporters in attendance at OTAs on Wednesday. "I think I'm like 305 lbs." Per Pro Football Focus, Jones's 10 sacks allowed were the second-most in the league last season — and the Steelers' young offensive tackle hopes that a switch to LT, along with dropping 20 lbs, will be enough to aid in a 2025 resurgence. Troy Fautanu ready for upcoming season after injury derailed rookie campaign

The Steelers' offensive line is going to look a bit different this season, in part because Troy Fautanu is healthy again and back on the field. Fautanu, the team's first round pick last year, says he's excited to be back on the field after spending nearly all of last season on the sidelines. After suffering a knee injury early in the season, Fautanu was placed on injured reserve and only appeared in one game for the Steelers. Fautanu says dealing with the injury was a difficult time for him, but he's happy to be on the other side of it now. "I wouldn't say I handled it the best some of the time," Fautanu said. "I would say I was my biggest enemy sometimes and thinking about my future when I really just had to lock in what was going on that day." Fautanu said that once he was able to focus on the day to day, he felt he was able to turn corner in the recovery from his injury. Broderick Jones, who moved to right tackle in Fautanu's absence, will be back in his original spot at left tackle and Fautanu will be on the right side. "Being back on the left, I feel like it's a bigger boost for me," Jones said. "Just because I've been used to playing on the left side." "At the end of the day, I made it through and I feel like that's what made me stronger and that's what's gonna make me play the best I can for this team," Fautanu said. Thursday will be the final day of Organized Team Activities for the Steelers.

5 big Steelers storylines during OTAs

On Tuesday of this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off their organized team activities (OTAs), which lead into the team's first mandatory minicamp of the offseason on June 10. Even though OTAs are optional, the expectation with the Steelers has always been that if you are on the team, you show up. The Steelers roster is in such a state of flux right now that we will be keeping a close eye on every move. Here are the five big storylines to watch over the course of OTAs. T.J. Watt's contract Will T.J. Watt show up for optional activities while he waits on a massive contract extension? We expect to see Watt and see him do a "hold-in" similar to what happened during his last contract negotiation. Will Aaron Rodgers make an appearance? No, we don't expect Rodgers to show up before June 10 if at all. But we do want to see how the team's other three quarterbacks respond, knowing the arrival of Rodgers could happen at any time and it's three quarterbacks fighting for two spots on the final 53-man roster. The wide receiver rotation DK Metcalf in the starting lineup is a given. But between the rest of the guys on the roster, namely Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson, who impresses the most and takes control of the No. 2 spot. New offensive tackles in new spots This will be the first look at Broderick Jones at left tackle and Troy Fautanu at right tackle. Fautanu was supposed to come in last year and help re-energize the offensive line, but a knee injury cost him his entire rookie season. Arthur Smith 2.0 We will continue to hold onto hope that this year's version of the Arthur Smith offense will be less methodical, less predictable and more explosive than last year's version, even if the quarterback position isn't settled. Steelers to Sign Massive Hawaiian OT after Tryout

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing undrafted offensive lineman Gareth Warren to a contract after a tryout at the team's rookie minicamp this weekend. Warren is a 6-foot-5 1/2, 328-pound offensive lineman from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii who came to the Steelers as a tryout from Lindenwood. The Steelers will start at Warren as a tackle, a team source confirmed. Advertisement Warren started out at as a guard at Lindenwood, which is in Lake Charles, Missouri, in 2021, the program's final season at the NCAA Division II level. In 2022, Warren and Lindenwood moved up, becoming members of the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I. Warren made four starts and played six games as a true freshman in 2021, earning All-GLVC third-team honors. In 2022, he started all 10 games at left guard and was an All-OVC second-team selection. Gareth Warren, Lindenwood Athletics For his junior season in 2023, Warren switched from left guard out to left tackle. The transition was a smooth one, as he allowed just two sacks on the season, per Pro Football Focus. Advertisement In 2024, Warren and the Lions offensive line helped pave the way for an OVC-best 173.7 yards per game. After the season, he was invited to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he was first scouted by the Steelers. Warren joins a group of players competing for backup roles at tackle behind projected starters Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu. Calvin Anderson was re-signed to reprise his role as swing backup from 2024. Fourth tackle Dylan Cook and versatile guard/tackle Spencer Anderson are also back, as well as guard/tackle Doug Nester, who spent all of his rookie season on the practice squad. With Spencer Anderson and Nester having some versatility, there is a chance for a young player like Warren to make an impact.
