HBO's "Harry Potter" Series: A Guide to Who's Heading to Hogwarts
Yara Sameh It's almost time for a whole new generation of wizards and witches to get into Hogwarts. 'Harry Potter,' the beloved fantasy book series from author J.K. Rowling that was turned into a blockbuster film franchise, is coming to HBO as a new TV series. Each of the seven books in the series, 'Sorcerer's Stone,' 'Chamber of Secrets,' 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' 'Goblet of Fire,' 'Order of the Phoenix,' 'Half-Blood Prince' and 'Deathly Hallows,' will each be adapted into one season of TV. In May 2025, the trio of lead roles had finally been unveiled: Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. The three are largely newcomers with few prior acting credits. McLaughlin acted in 'Grow,' a comedy on Sky with Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, Stanton starred as Matilda in the musical of the same name in the West End, and Stout had no prior acting credits. HBO auditioned more than 32,000 children for the lead role of Harry Potter, famously originated by Daniel Radcliffe. Executive producer Mark Mylod said that the casting team had been reviewing between 500 and 1,000 audition tapes per day. 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,' said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod in a statement revealing the three actors. Other series regulars include 'Conclave' star John Lithgow as Album Dumbledore, 'I May Destroy You' breakout star Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, 'Tumbleweeds' Oscar nominee Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and 'Shaun of the Dead' comedian Nick Frost as Hagrid. Meanwhile, Paul Whitehouse (Tom Stoppard's 'Leopoldstadt,' Rupert Goold's 'Patriots') and Luke Thallon ('The Fast Show,' 'Harry & Paul') take on recurring roles as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch and Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell, respectively. The 'Harry Potter' series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies

HBO has officially revealed the young actors who will bring Harry, Ron, and Hermione back to our screens in its brand-new Harry Potter TV series. After a huge search with over 30,000 children auditioning, the main trio has finally been chosen. In the films, those roles were played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, respectively. There were eight Harry Potter films and a series of three Fantastic Beasts movies — a spinoff of the original IP. Author J.K. Rowling wrote seven Harry Potter books; the eighth book in the series was split into two movies. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' HBO very publicly hosted an open casting call to find this next installment's new kids. Previously-announced cast can be found here. The Harry Potter series, not (yet?) officially titled 'Harry Potter,' to be clear, will be 'a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books,' HBO says. The series will stream on HBO Max (fka Max, ffka HBO Max — it's a whole thing). The HBO series is produced in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. HBO's 'Harry Potter' TV series has officially found its Harry, Ron and Hermione. Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley. The 'Harry Potter' roles launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint to worldwide fame in the early 2000s, and the HBO series could very well do the same for McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout, who are largely newcomers. McLaughlin acted in 'Grow,' an upcoming comedy on Sky starring Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, while Stanton starred as Matilda in 'Matilda: The Musical' on the West End from 2023-2024. 'Harry Potter' will be Stout's first major role. They join fellow cast members John Lithgow ('Conclave,' 'The Crown') as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer ('Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' 'The White Queen') as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu ('I May Destroy You,' 'Gangs of London') as Severus Snape, Nick Frost ('Shaun of the Dead,' 'Hot Fuzz') as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon (Tom Stoppard's 'Leopoldstadt,' Rupert Goold's 'Patriots') as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse ('The Fast Show,' 'Harry & Paul') as Argus Filch. The 'Harry Potter' series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Rowling, who wrote the original 'Harry Potter' books has come under fire in recent years for her controversial views on the transgender community. When asked if her views on the trans community made him worried for the show, HBO's chief content officer Casey Bloys said recently on 'The Town' podcast: 'We already have a show on HBO from her called 'C.B. Strike' that we do with the BBC. It's pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She's entitled to them. 'Harry Potter' is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.' Stanton is represented by Gavin Mills and Julie Gordon at Olivia Bell, and Public Eye. HBO's Harry Potter: All about the new series In the early 2000s, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint became globally famous, thanks to the Harry Potter movie series. HBO is working with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros to make a TV series based on the franchise. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes, and Francesca Gardiner will write and run the show. JK Rowling, Ruth Kenley-Letts, Neil Blair, and David Heyman, the producer of the Harry Potter movie, are among the executive producers. Rowling's 'controversial' stance on trans rights in recent times has, however, led to some criticism about her involvement in the project. Casey Bloys, the HBO content chief, recently dismissed concerns that the show would be influenced by those viewpoints, stating that the emphasis is still on authentically interpreting the books. When and where to watch the new HBO Harry Potter series? Shooting for the new Harry Potter TV series will begin in the summer of 2025. The release is planned for 2026. We expect more casting announcements soon. The goal of the project is to give fans a fresh take on the series. Netizens' reaction to the new cast of HBO's Harry Potter series The internet has been divided over the new cast of the series, with many fans embracing the fresh faces and others sceptical about the reboot. One user wrote: 'Please tell Dominic, Arabella, and Alastair they are already loved by the fandom. We can't wait to see the show!' Another added: 'Not bad at all. Good luck to them. Hope they have fun making this for a new generation of Potterheads.' A fan praised the casting of Arabella Stanton as Hermione, noting: 'She actually looks like book Hermione — even the teeth Emma Watson didn't have.' However, not all reactions were positive. Some fans expressed disappointment, particularly with the casting of Snape and Hermione: 'After miscasting Snape, I have no faith left,' one fan wrote. Another added, 'The movies are superior — this remake will flop.' Despite the mixed reviews, excitement remains high, with many eager to see how this new generation of actors will bring Hogwarts back to life.
