Driver charged with manslaughter, DUI in fatal crash in San Francisco's SoMa
A driver is facing multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, following a deadly crash in San Francisco's South of Market earlier this week, prosecutors said. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins' office announced that 28-year-old Manuel Diaz-Chi was arraigned Thursday in connection with the crash, which took place near the intersection of 10th and Folsom streets early Tuesday morning. Diaz-Chi was charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. He is also accused of having a blood alcohol level of .15% or higher and that he inflicted great bodily injury on the victim. Prosecutors said Diaz-Chi was behind the wheel of a Mazda van on 10th Street shortly after 5 a.m. He allegedly had been drinking all night and into the early morning hours. When reaching the intersection of 10th and Folsom, Diaz-Chi was allegedly following other vehicles too closely. He then went around the vehicles and ran over a woman who was in the middle of the intersection, according to prosecutors. The victim was dragged for a block. Police said they found the victim underneath Diaz-Chi's van. Medics took the woman to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Prosecutors said Diaz-Chi "displayed objective symptoms of intoxication" to police and that officers found bottles of beer in his vehicle. Diaz-Chi declined field sobriety tests but consented to a breath test which revealed a blood alcohol at 0.16%, more than twice the legal limit, at 8 a.m. During Thursday's hearing, prosecutors moved to have Diaz-Chi detained pending trial. The court set bail at $80,000 and he remains in custody. Diaz-Chi is scheduled to appear for a bail review hearing on Tuesday.

Man charged with narcotics trafficking in S.F., possessing more than a kilo of fentanyl
A man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to multiple narcotics trafficking counts — including an allegation that he had more than one kilogram of fentanyl — in San Francisco Superior Court, district attorney's officials said. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced her office charged Jefferson Arrechaba, 31, with multiple felonies in connection to drug trafficking in the Tenderloin. Prosecutors said Arrechaba possessed multiple drugs for trafficking sales, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin and alprazolam, a benzodiazepine commonly referred to as Xanax. Arrechaba denied all the allegations in his arraignment Tuesday, officials said. Prosecutors said at approximately 10:40 p.m. on May 8 at the 600 block of McAllister Street, police observed Arrechaba make 'quick and furtive hand movements' between himself and several other people while holding a clear plastic bag. When police made an attempt to detain him, Arrechaba allegedly threw a car key in the bushes. During their search of him, police allegedly found 87.7 grams of suspected fentanyl, $2,169 in cash, empty baggies and a cell phone, prosecutors said. After retrieving the car key, police located a blue Honda CR-V and found more than a kilogram of suspected fentanyl, 389.3 grams of suspected heroin, 32.1 grams of suspected alprazolam, 437.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine and four digital scales. Arrechaba was out of custody at the time of the incident on a pending felony case, officials said. Arrechaba now remains in custody with no bail option. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 23, officials said.

'Deeply shaken': Video shows man attack woman in Outer Sunset
A grandmother was injured and left feeling 'heartbroken and deeply shaken' after she was struck twice with a wooden stick while taking out her trash in San Francisco's Outer Sunset Thursday morning, her son-in-law said. The woman, who is in her 60s, was putting a trash bag into her bins on 30th Avenue when a man approached from across the street while her back was turned, according to surveillance video shared with the Chronicle. He held a wooden pole and raised it above his head before striking her in the back of the head and upper back, the video shows. The man hit her face with the stick after she turned toward him, the video showed. The woman backed up and grabbed her nose bridge, where she was hit, and the man turned and walked away, heading toward Irving Street, according to camera footage. San Francisco police confirmed that officers responded to a report of an aggravated assault on 30th Avenue around 9 a.m. Thursday to find a woman with non life-threatening injuries. Police said that a man struck the woman with an unknown weapon without provocation before walking southbound down the street. Police said that no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Following the attack, the woman continued to check her injuries before heading back to her house, where her daughter and son-in-law learned about the attack and called police, her son-in-law said. Paramedics were also called to the scene and the woman was evaluated at a hospital to rule out a concussion and fractures, her son-in-law said. 'She's a little bit scared and spooked right now,' her son-in-law said. He said that his mother-in-law, who lives with him, his wife and their daughter, is 'old school' and always prefers to walk to her favorite Chinese grocery store, even when he would offer a ride. Now, he worries that she won't feel safe walking around their neighborhood. The woman's son-in-law canvassed neighbors, asking for security camera footage and asking if anyone recognized the attacker. All the neighbors were shocked to learn about the attack, he said, and no one had seen the attacker before. 'We've been living here 10 years,' the son-in-law said. 'This is our home, and it's always felt safe.' Now, though, his family was left 'speechless at what happened,' he said. The son-in-law said that police returned after taking an initial report to photograph the woman's injuries and get some of the video footage that the son-in-law had received from neighbors. The victim's son-in-law also posted on Reddit about the attack, saying that it was being looked into potentially as a hate crime. Numerous incidents of violence against Asian elderly people in San Francisco have been reported in recent years. 'We want to make sure that our Asian seniors have the ability to walk down the street safely in our city,' San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said after a different attack last year. 'If there is no accountability for the people who attack them, if we don't have adequate consequences for that behavior, it will continue.' The family of the victim pleaded with the public to send to police any surveillance footage or information that could help identify the suspect. 'This isn't just about our family. It's about all of us — neighbors, parents, children — who deserve to feel safe on our own street,' the victim's son-in-law said.

Drunk New Year's Eve party-goer convicted by SF jury
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A man who was speeding on Interstate 80 on New Year's Day with a blood alcohol limit nearly twice the legal limit was convicted in a trial by jury, prosecutors announced on Friday. DUI DJ was going 90 mph on Highway 101: SF DA San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said testimony and evidence proved that George Callen, 34, was pulled over on January 1 at 1:50 a.m. by California Highway Patrol Officers for 'traveling at a dangerous speed' as he raced toward San Francisco near the Treasure Island exit. The D.A. said Callen was the only occupant in the vehicle and admitted to CHP officers to drinking alcohol with friends and family at a New Year's Eve party in Rodeo before hopping behind the wheel. Officers said they spotted 'objective signs of intoxication.' No was hurt in the incident. CHP said Callen was arrested and taken to the San Francisco CHP area office where 'a chemical breath test confirmed the defendant's high blood alcohol, with results of 0.145% and 0.147%.' 'My office takes these cases seriously and will continue to do everything we can to make our roads safer,' said Jenkins in a news release. 'This conviction shows that the people of San Francisco will not tolerate the dangers posed by drunk driving in our city,' added Assistant District Attorney Samantha Phelan.
