A police spokesperson said: "Police were notified of a single vehicle collision at a licensed track day at Donington Park yesterday (24 May). "The driver of the vehicle – a man in his 70s – was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. "Enquiries are continuing on behalf of HM Coroner. Identification of the deceased is a matter for the coroner." Leicestershire Police confirmed that no criminal investigation was underway. Driver Dai Roberts also tragically passed away yesterday following a separate incident at the Jim Clark Rally.

British motorsport rocked after two drivers are tragically killed on the same day in separate events - as police release statements
The British motorsport community has been left in mourning after two drivers passed away in separate events on Saturday. Julian Grimwade died after crashing during a race at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire during the Vintage Motorsport Festival. On the same day co-driver Dai Roberts passed away after an incident at the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders. Grimwade had been a popular figure in the community, serving as Vice Chairman of Members at the Brookland Museum and appeared in the 2021 TV series Secrets of the Transport Museum. The popular historics racer crashed his Oakland Romano Special during his first lap in the Mephistopheles & Lanchester Trophy contest. A police spokesperson said: 'Police were notified of a single vehicle collision at a licensed track day at Donington Park yesterday (24 May). 'The driver of the vehicle – a man in his 70s – was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. 'Enquiries are continuing on behalf of HM Coroner. Identification of the deceased is a matter for the coroner.' Meanwhile Roberts was navigating a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 car driven by James Williams when it crashed at around 10.50am during round three of the British Rally Championship. The tragedy is the latest to befall Mr Roberts' family after his younger brother, Gareth, lost his life in an accident while competing in the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily, Italy, in June 2012. His former driver also died in August 2014 when the pair were involved in a horror crash in the Ulster Rally in Northern Ireland. Police Scotland superintendent Vincent Fisher said: 'Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.'
