Georgia teen Mason Howell dominates US Amateur final
MASON Howell became the third-youngest US Amateur champion in the tournament's 125-year history as he defeated Jackson Herrington 7 and 6 in the 36-hole finale on Sunday at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. The 18-year-old Howell, who'll soon start his senior year at Brookwood High School in Thomasville, Ga., secured the most lopsided US Amateur victory since Bryson DeChambeau won by an identical score in 2015. Howell recorded three birdies and one eagle during the first 18 holes to build a 4-up lead over the 19-year-old Herrington, a University of Tennessee sophomore. After a brief break, Howell pushed his lead to 6-up through 21 holes. He closed out the match on the 30th hole. "It's been a long week," Howell said, according to Golfweek. "It feels like I've been here a month." In addition to winning the Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Trophy, Howell secured invitations to next year's Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship. Howell qualified for this year's U.S. Open at Oakmont, but did not make the cut. "I think he came in here with a little bit of something to prove," Howell's father, Robert, told Golfweek. "I see him play phenomenal golf all the time. It's just putting it together time after time after time, and after seeing what he did at the sectional US Open qualifier, I know he's got what it takes to play out here." BC names Alabama transfer Dylan Lonergan its starting quarterback

'He's got a really good arm. He's got good anticipation, good accuracy. He's very calm, a very poised guy. So is Grayson. Grayson's a very poised guy, too. At the end of the day, in the passing game, Dylan was a little bit ahead of Grayson.' James (6-3, 218), a redshirt senior, completed 63.9 percent of his passes and won four of the six games he appeared in last year. The 17-year-old high school junior from Georgia punched his ticket to the 125th edition of the PGA Tour major after magnificent play in the qualifiers. Howell competed in the U.S. Open final qualifying at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta and breezed through the course Monday. The day is dubbed "Golf's Longest Day," as players have to play two rounds of golf in one day, although that was hardly an issue for Howell. He shot 18-under-par for the day to finish tied for first with Jackson Buchanan in the qualifying event, shooting a 63 in both rounds. Even more impressive was Howell didn't have a single bogey during the day. He birdied on the par-5 18th to cap off the day in front of several amateur and PGA Tour players older than him, including 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson. "I would encourage kids to start playing golf and get it into it because it's one of the greatest sports you can play." Last month, he was part of the boy's golf team that won the Georgia state championship, the program's fourth title in five years. Even more impressive, Howell won the low medalist at the state championship, winning the honor in a playoff. Howell is currently ranked eighth in the boys American Junior Golf Association rankings, but he entered Monday as the 496th ranked amateur. In his amateur career, he won the 2023 Billy Horschel Junior Championship and has 11 top-10 finishes in his young career. He also won the Future Masters Tournament in Alabama in 2023. Qualifying for the 2025 U.S. Open will easily go down as 'one of the greatest moments' of 17-year-old Mason Howell's life. The high school junior earned the right to compete in the third major of the season after shooting 18-under par at Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta on Monday, known as 'Golf's Longest Day,' when he participated in one of several qualifying events across the country. 'It was a roller coaster all day,' the Georgia-based teen said after shooting a pair of 63s in two rounds.
