Miami-Dade and Broward are under a flood watch as more rounds of rain on the way
After several days of persistent rain, Wednesday will be a transitional day as the wet weather will not be as intense nor as widespread. Miami-Dade and Broward are under a flood watch through 5 p.m. Wednesday. While scattered storms capable of producing a quick 1 to 2 inches will be most common on Wednesday, there is the potential for a band of storms to impact the same location with heavy rain multiple times, according to the National Weather Service. It said should this occur, a quick 4 to 6 inches of rainfall is not out of the question. Broward's most active rain period will be around noon and 1 p.m. Miami-Dade's most active period will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. There is a low level risk of flash flooding. The reason for the relentless rain is a low pressure system over the Gulf of America. On Wednesday, it will begin to move north so South Florida's weather will improve. Adding to that improvement is Saharan dust which is beginning to creep in. NEXT Weather meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said the widespread rain we've experienced over the last few days will end around midday. On Thursday, the chance of rain is 60% and that drops to 30% on Friday. Saturday and Sunday will see a more typical rainy season pattern with highs around 90 degrees.

Dillard's Alexia Reid is the Broward Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year
Fort Lauderdale Dillard track and field standout Alexia Reid is very goal-oriented. She is also very good at achieving those goals. Before her senior season, she set specific marks she wanted to reach before finishing a stellar high school career. A season, which had a few ups and downs, couldn't have ended better in her opinion. 'I didn't hit the exact times I wanted to in the hurdles, but I got better as the season went on,' Reid said. 'The season was just perfect. It started good and ended good.' It's hard to argue with Reid's assessment. Reid, one of the main architects of Dillard's rise to state powerhouse status in girls' track and field, finished her time with the Panthers as a state champion in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, as well as a key contributor on two of Broward County's best relays. And so, Reid is the Miami Herald's Broward Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Reid's efforts helped Dillard repeat as girls' team state champions in Class 3A, topping mighty Miami Northwestern for the second consecutive year after the Bulls had won a state-record 14 state titles in a row. 'It was a satisfying win, especially after we had so many (weather) delays the first day,' Reid said. 'We had to regroup and stay strong mentally and determined. It showed how together we were as a team and as a family.' Reid ran on Dillard's 1,600-meter relay team, which posted a Broward-best time of 3:42.99, but finished a spot behind Northwestern's state meet-record time of 3:38.91. That was one of the Panthers' very few setbacks, though. Reid contributed during the season on the Panthers' 400-relay squad, which won a state title. Her biggest highlights came in the hurdles events. She ran a personal best 13.40 seconds earlier in the season and ran a winning time of 13.70 in the 100 hurdles at state. In the 400 hurdles, Reid broke a minute during the season, which was one of her main goals, and did it again at state to win that state title in 59.59 seconds. Reid will now look to continue her development at the collegiate level when she runs the hurdles for UCF. But Reid values having been part of the foundation, which built what could be a lasting legacy for girls' track and field competitors at Dillard. 'We have a lot of athletes that will keep it going. Being a part of that journey was amazing, seeing the growth of a lot of individual athletes. Even seeing how much I progressed and our team progressed was amazing,' Reid said.

Woman killed, man injured in double stabbing at Broward apartment complex: cops
Two people were attacked in a parking garage by a knife-wielding resident of a Broward apartment complex early Wednesday, leaving a woman dead and a man injured, according to police. Around 1:50 a.m., Sunrise Police responded to a 911 call made at The Retreat at Sawgrass Village apartments on 3000 NW 130th Terrace, where they found the injured man outside the garage. Despite being stabbed in the throat, he was alert and able to tell them what happened. He told officers that another man, identified Thursday as 21-year-old Jackson Sagesse, ran off after stabbing he and his friend in a black Mercedes Benz that they had just parked in a garage moments earlier. Officers subsequently found the woman inside the Mercedes, lying in the back seat with multiple stab wounds to her neck. They found her dead minutes later. A steak knife, believed to be from a kitchen set, was found on the car's front passenger seat. Security camera footage helped investigators piece together what happened. The video shows the Mercedes arriving and parking in a restricted spot near a handicap space. The driver then gets out of the car and exits the cameras view. A short time later, Sagesse appears on camera entering the garage, holding what resembled a metallic object. The woman could be seen stepping out of the car, but swiftly tried to hop back inside when she noticed Segasse approaching. Before she could close the car door, Sagesse pried it open and stabbed her repeatedly, according to police. About a minute later, police say the video showed Sagesse stopped his attack and closed the car door. The driver, who had briefly stepped away, walked back into the camera frame and could be seen confronting Sagesse. A struggle ensued, during which Sagesse stabbed the man in the throat, according to police. Somehow, he managed to escape and call for help. Sagesse tried to drive off in the Mercedes, but failed to get the car in reverse. He resorted to fleeing on foot, heading toward a building within the same apartment complex at 3004 NW 130th Terrace, where he lives with his mother. An employee at the apartment complex recognized Sagesse and told officers he lived in unit 153. Police found him there and took him into custody. He was wearing the same clothes seen in the surveillance footage. Another steak knife was found in his pocket, similar to the one in the car. A search of his apartment revealed blood on a sliding door and a kitchen knife block missing two steak knives — matching the ones investigators recovered. Sagesse was questioned by detectives, but according to the redacted arrest report, his answers were vague and inconsistent. Police have not confirmed whether he knew the victims. Sagesse is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. He is being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
