Elon Musk's new political party could pose ‘serious problem' for Republicans
Former Labor advisor Bruce Hawker discusses Elon Musk's new 'America Party' and the damage it could deal to the Republican Party. 'You look at the history of third-party candidates in the United States when they actually do get involved; Ross Perot was an example of that, who destroyed the Republican presidential campaign back in the early 90s,' Mr Hawker told Sky News Australia. 'That is a really serious problem, because they have got first-past-the-post voting there so in every election that they have, except in very remote cases, the preferences of that candidate don't come into play. 'What happens then is that 10 per cent of the vote may just get sliced straight off the Republican side of the equation.'

RBA's rate hold was nothing more than a ‘cautionary move'
Former Labor advisor Bruce Hawker says the RBA's decision to hold the cash rate was nothing more than a 'cautionary move'. It comes after the Reserve Bank of Australia denied mortgage holders what would have been the first consecutive interest rate cuts since 2020. 'I think we will find that the CPI numbers, when they come out in August, will show that there is a very, very good case to reduce interest rates,' Mr Hawker told Sky News Australia. 'You wouldn't want to be going out for election right now if you were the RBA governor right now, but she doesn't have to go through that process.'

Matt Canavan's leadership tilt questioned
Former Labor adviser Bruce Hawker has weighed in on Matt Canavan's bid to challenge David Littleproud for the leadership of the Nationals following the Coalition's federal election defeat. The Queensland Senator confirmed he will vie for Nationals leader when the party room meets on Monday in Canberra amid Jacinta Price's defection to the Liberals. "He's very conservative, he's a bit of a disruptor. Again, somebody who probably isn't reading the room particularly well when it comes to where the Australian public is right now," Mr Hawker told Sky News Australia. "I think if I were the National party, I'd be trying to settle things down a bit, looking to get in touch with their own electors who obviously have some concerns as well. "They have to be looking all the time at their own base just like the other parties do too ... if I were them, I think I'd probably stick with Littleproud."

Sussan Ley may be a better option for Liberal leadership, says former Labor campaign strategist
As Liberal MPs prepare to elect a new leader on Tuesday, former Labor adviser Bruce Hawker says Sussan Ley may be the better option. 'Susan Ley may be a better option for them just because she's a woman,' Mr Hawker told Sky News Australia. 'That sends a message to a lot of would-be Liberal voters out there who've said we're not prepared to support a party that is giving us four Liberal members of parliament who are women against 40 for the Labor Party and counting.'
