Lille predicted XI v Brest: Olivier Giroud and Berke Özer set for debuts in season opener

Bruno Génésio has revealed his frustration with Lille OSC's inactivity in the transfer market ahead of the start of the season, and the squad ahead of the campaign opener against Stade Brestois feels like a work in progress. Berke Özer only completed his move to Lille three days ago, but will already be thrown into the starting lineup as the new no. 1, following Lucas Chevalier's move to Paris Saint-Germain. Génésio is without any of his three right-backs after Tiago Santos's return from an ACL injury was delayed by a sore throat, meaning the youth prospect Ousmane Touré has been drafted into the role. Despite the problems, there is still excitement around this Lille squad, particularly in the number nine role. All eyes will be on Olivier Giroud as the 2018 World Cup winner marks his return to Ligue 1 thirteen years after leaving for Arsenal. Lille likely lineup v Brest Berke Özer; Romain Perraud, Alexsandro, Nathan Ngoy, Ousmane Touré; Ayyoub Bouaddi, Benjamin André, Ngal'ayel Mukau; Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Olivier Giroud, Hákon Arnar Haraladsson. Olivier Giroud to discuss terms of departure with LAFC amid Lille interest

According to a report from RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Olivier Giroud (38) is set to discuss the terms of his departure from LAFC before agreeing on personal terms with Lille OSC. As per Le Petit Lillois and confirmed by L'Équipe, Les Dogues have made an approach for France's all-time top scorer, as they look for reinforcements to strengthen their forward line following the expected departures of Jonathan David (at the end of his contract) and Chuba Akpom (returning to parent club Ajax). Advertisement Foot Mercato further explained that Lille have offered Giroud a one-year contract, which will have the option to extend for a further year. The 2018 World Cup winner reportedly is interested in the project and wants to join Bruno Génésio's squad. However, he has a contract with LAFC until the end of the calendar year, and the MLS side have the option to extend this for another season. It remains to be seen whether the club will allow their 2024 signing to return to France where he has not played since leaving Montpellier HSC in 2012 for Arsenal. GFFN | Nick Hartland

Lille's Angel Gomes and Jonathan David return to fitness ahead of Monaco clash

Bruno Génésio was able to confirm the return of three key Lille OSC attacking players ahead of hosting AS Monaco on Saturday afternoon. Jonathan David, Angel Gomes, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo all resumed training this week. David and Gomes both returned to training on Thursday after they missed the Sunday night match against Stade Rennais (2-0) last weekend following minor muscular issues. Fernandez-Pardo has been out of action since the start of the new year. The winger suffered a torn ligament in his ankle ten minutes into the match against FC Nantes on the 4th of January (1-1). The Belgian was able to return to training on Tuesday. Génésio stated, 'It's not a luxury to have several players back, especially in attack, it's very good news.' However, Lille still will be without a significant amount of their squad with Edon Zhegrova, Rémy Cabella, Ethan Mbappé, and Thiago Santos all on the sidelines, while Mitchel Bakker is suspended. 4th place is up for grabs for Lille if they can defeat Monaco on Saturday, and possibly even a podium position if OGC Nice falter against strugglers Montpellier HSC.
