Jaime Munguia speaks out as failed drug test is confirmed by B-sample
Jaime Munguia has vowed to 'prove' that he 'never disrespected the sport' of boxing, after a B-sample confirmed that he had failed a drug test. In May, Munguia beat Bruno Surace via unanimous decision, avenging a shock knockout loss to the Frenchman in December. However, it was announced earlier this month that the Mexican, 28, had returned an adverse drug-test result, with exogenous testosterone found in his system. Advertisement That was per an A-sample, and now, the B-sample has backed up the initial result. Munguia said in a statement on Tuesday (17 June): 'I have spent my entire career and life doing things the right way – and this is no exception. 'I love boxing, and I am the first one who wants to clear everything up, because boxing is my life. I can't wait to get back in the ring. We're going to prove that we never disrespected the sport, my opponents, or misled the fans.' Meanwhile, a statement from Team Munguia read: 'Today, we can confirm that Jaime Munguia's B-sample has been opened and analyzed, and consistent with the A-sample, was also positive. Jaime was present in Utah for the opening of the B-sample, demonstrating his respect for the process and his full commitment to transparency and cooperation at every step. Advertisement 'We want to reiterate that this outcome does not change our position: Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally ingest any banned substance. We remain steadfast in the belief that this result was caused by contamination, and we are continuing to take every possible step to identify the source. As the next step, our team is submitting a list of all supplements and products Jaime used to a WADA-accredited laboratory for testing. This is critical in helping determine how the substance may have entered his system and ensuring the integrity of the review. 'Jaime remains unwavering in his commitment to clean competition, and we will continue to work closely with experts and relevant authorities to reach full clarity.' Advertisement When Munguia's A-sample was revealed, Surace told The Ring: 'I'm shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance. There's no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already. 'I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguia fair and square in December, and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May. He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field. I trust that this result will be overturned immediately.' Munguia is best known for his decision loss to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in May 2024, when he was dropped and outpointed by his compatriot while trying to win the unified super-middleweight titles. Munguia felt the need to dismiss theories about Canelo and the latter's coach (Getty) For the rematch with Surace, Munguia trained under Eddy Reynoso, who coaches and manages Alvarez. That has led Munguia's team to dismiss theories around his failed drug test; earlier in Alvarez's career, all while under Reynoso's tutelage, Canelo failed a drug test and blamed tainted meat. Advertisement A statement from Team Munguia in early June read: 'We also want to clarify that Eddy Reynoso serves only as Jaime's trainer. He is not involved in Jaime's nutrition, supplementation, or medical oversight. Likewise, no one on Canelo Alvarez's team has any role in overseeing Jaime's regimen or is in any way responsible for this situation. 'Any implication that Reynoso or anyone associated with Canelo's team bears responsibility is entirely unfounded and unfair.'

Jaime Munguía promises ‘clarity' on failed drugs test, but hints at inadvertent use
Former world champion Jaime Munguía has released a second statement after his failed VADA test following his points decision over Bruno Surace. Munguía has intimated in the last twenty-four hours that the exogenous testosterone in his system was due to contamination and reiterated that he had been tested more than 100 times in his career without an adverse finding. Last week, VADA said that Munguía had tested positive for elevated testosterone following his rematch with Surace. A few days after the adverse test result was announced, Munguía asked for his second sample to be tested. Those results are not yet known. Now, Munguía's team have released a statement promising 'additional clarity' in response to what it calls 'speculation and misinformation'. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jaime Munguía (@jaimemunguiaoficial) However, the Instagram-released statement does little but muddy the waters. Munguía's team said in its statement: 'The test in question was one of multiple tests conducted during training camp – all others came back clean. The positive A-sample result was unexpected and deeply concerning to us. Exogenous testosterone – like many banned substances – can enter the body in several ways, not solely through intentional use. At this moment, we do not yet know what caused the result.' The team added: 'We are rigorously reviewing every product Jaime has used, including supplements, pharmaceuticals, treatments, and anything else that could be relevant. This is a meticulous process, and we are committed to uncovering how this substance may have entered his system.' There was an attempt through the statement, too, to assuage speculation that Eddy Reynoso, Munguía's coach, had any part in Munguía's nutrition. The team asked for speculation to cease until the results of the second test were revealed. It was also said by Munguía's team that they had not yet been informed about the exact levels of testosterone in the first sample. The statement reads: 'While we wait, we urge the public and the media to avoid drawing premature conclusions based on incomplete information. One thing we know for certain: Jaime is not a cheater. He did not knowingly or intentionally take anything that would violate anti-doping regulations. To suggest otherwise is not only inaccurate, but deeply unfair to a fighter who has always operated with professionalism, integrity, and respect for the sport.' It adds: 'He has been a consistent advocate for clean boxing and has personally insisted on VADA testing throughout his career because he understands that in a contact sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs can have serious, even dangerous, consequences.'

Bruno Surace calls for defeat to Jaime Munguía to be overturned after opponent returns positive test
Former world champion Jaime Munguía has returned an adverse analytical finding for testosterone metabolites in his A-sample after his second fight against Bruno Surace. The Ring reports that Munguia's A-sample returned an adverse analytical finding, and that the 28-year-old has 10 days to request an analysis of his B-sample. Munguía had defeated Surace on points following their first encounter, which Surace won by knockout. On the undercard of stablemate Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez's unification bout with William Scull, Munguía, 45-2 (35), controlled the bout with Surace from start to finish, continuing a similar pattern from the first fight. In the original meeting, Surace found a knockout punch in the sixth round to turn the contest on its head. The defeat to Munguía was the first of Frenchman Surace's career, the 26-year-old moving to a record of 26-1-2 (5). Speaking about Munguía's positive test, Surace told The Ring: 'I'm shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance. There's no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already." He added: 'I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguía fair and square in December and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May. He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field. I trust that this result will be overturned immediately.' Munguía linked up with Eddy Reynoso ahead of facing Surace for a second time at the start of May. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), which adminstered the tests, has been approached for comment. Canelo vs Scull: Who is Bruno Surace? Meet the man who knocked out Jaime Munguia
Jaime Munguia returns to the ring on the 3rd of May on the Canelo-Scull undercard with the hopes of exacting revenge on Bruno 'Brunello' Surace. The Mexican had his plans of rebuilding to a world title challenge derailed by the relative unknown Surace in December, who finished the year by producing the 2024 Ring Upset of the Year by knocking out Munguia in the sixth round. With an immediate rematch, Surace has the opportunity to confirm his place in the world rankings and prove his victory was no miracle. Who is Bruno Surace? Name: Bruno Surace Age: 26 Record: 26-0-2 (5 KOs) Rounds: 171 Height: 6' 0' Stance: Orthodox History Surace, born in Marseille, made his professional debut in 2016 at super welterweight where he composed a record of 8-0-2 without a single knockout. A move up to middleweight saw him score the first of his five career knockouts in 2018. He continued unbeaten and claimed the French middleweight title in 2021.'Brunello' made slow progress through the rankings and claimed his biggest victory in 2023 in capturing the EBU Silver middleweight championship. After a year layoff from the ring, Surace got the call to replace Ronald Gavril and fight Munguia. This was his first fight outside of France and he came in as the heavy underdog against the former WBO super welterweight champion who was now a top-ranked super middleweight. It was expected that Munguia would make easy work of the Frenchman in a homecoming fight in Tijuana, Mexico. However, Surace explained that he was not intimidated by the occasion or the hostile crowd and that the only thing in his mind was how this fight could change the trajectory of his career. 'I knew this fight could change my life,' 'Brunello' said to BoxingScene. 'So, when I threw a punch, I kept it in mind that it could change my life, so I was 100 per cent focused and motivated by that.' Come fight night, it looked as though Munguia was going to get an early stoppage, dropping Surace with a powerful left hook and controlling the action thereafter. But the man from Marseille hung in and when he saw his opportunity, he pounced with a right hand that flattened Munguia. 'I didn't realise when I threw my punch,' Surace explained to BoxingScene. 'But when I saw him fall, I saw his eyes, and he didn't get up. And I knew he wouldn't get up.' Surace's stock skyrocketed, seeing him rise to number five ranked at super middleweight by the IBF and WBO. He maintains that he is a natural middleweight but would not write off any opportunities at super middleweight that may come his way.
