One injured in latest shooting in Brussels as city struggles with drug gang violence

ADVERTISEMENT A 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting in Brussels overnight, authorities said on Wednesday, adding to a spate of gun attacks in the Belgian capital in recent months. Police were called to the Rue Ruysdael in city's district of Anderlecht at 1 am and found the victim with a gunshot wound to his thigh, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office said. The victim was taken to hospital and his condition is not life-threatening, the office said. "The investigation is ongoing in order to determine the circumstances of the events, the context in which they occurred and to identify the perpetrator(s)," the prosecutor said. Gang-related murders rock Brussels Brussels has been rocked by a string of shootings linked to drug gangs in recent years. Eleven gun attacks were recorded in the capital in the first six weeks of this year alone, with two people killed and four injured. One such shooting incident in February led to a manhunt and the temporary closure of many of the city's metro stations. Although it is unclear if the incidents are related, they are believed to be linked to territorial disputes between different drug gangs in the capital. Security officials have said that the violence was bound to trickle into other cities in Belgium. Citizens' groups have increasingly complained about lawlessness in several Brussels neighbourhoods at night and have demanded a greater police presence. The new Belgian government, led by Flemish nationalist Bart De Wever, has said that he wants police zones permanently merged to better combat violence in the city. In a separate incident of violence in Brussels this week, an armed robbery took place on Monday afternoon in a jewellery store in the city centre, the prosecutor's office said. Officers were dispatched to the store, but the suspects had already fled, it said. There were no injuries and investigations are under way, according to local police.

One injured in second shooting near Brussels metro station

Police responded to a second shooting in less than two days near the Clémenceau metro station in Brussels on Thursday. According to the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office, one person was injured in the incident and transferred to hospital. Prosecutor Julian Moinil told RTBF radio that the shooting took place overnight at around 3am CET, and that the perpetrator used a handgun. Authorities have sent a team to the site to investigate. The incident is the second in two days near the Clémenceau metro station. It is not yet clear whether the two are directly related, but both are suspected to be linked to territorial disputes between drug gangs. "In 24 hours we had three shootings: two in Anderlecht and one in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode," Moinil said. "We don't know who we are dealing with." On Wednesday, two metro lines and several tram lines were temporarily suspended after police hunted underground for masked gunmen. Images from surveillance cameras showed two people carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles opening fire outside the station before fleeing into the tunnels. The suspects have yet to be caught.

Former Belgium international Nainggolan arrested in cocaine trafficking probe

BRUSSELS, Jan 27, (AP): Former Belgium international Radja Nainggolan has been arrested as part of an investigation into cocaine trafficking into Europe from South America, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office said. Brussels federal police carried out thirty searches on Monday morning, mainly in the province of Antwerp and in and around Brussels as part of the investigation. The Brussels public prosecutor's office confirmed that the soccer player was "deprived of his liberty in connection with this case.' The probe focuses on the alleged importation of cocaine from South America via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium, the office said. After several months without a club, Nainggolan came out of retirement to play second-tier Belgian side Lokeren-Temse. He celebrated his debut with a goal straight from a corner kick last weekend. His new team said in a statement that it only found out about his arrest from media reports. "The club respects the presumption of innocence and therefore cannot comment further,' it said. "We can only confirm that the player was absent from training this morning. The club will continue to focus on tomorrow's crucial league match against KAS Eupen. Radja Nainggolan is not eligible to play in that match anyway.' The 36-year-old Nainggolan has made 30 appearances for Belgium but has not played for the Red Devils since March 2018. Known for his fiery character, the central midfielder spent most of his career in Italy, notably playing for Roma and Inter Milan.

When he played for Royal Antwerp in 2022, he was suspended after he was caught smoking an electronic cigarette on the bench. The Belgian club at the time also mentioned how his behavior could negatively affect the squad. ___ More AP soccer:
