Story behind new machine in Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries
The kiosk, a result of a partnership between Buchanan Galleries and Glasgow City Council, allows people to purchase the city's gift card in person for the first time. Located near the Sauchiehall Street entrance, the kiosk is available during regular hours at the Buchanan Galleries. The initiative, part of the Scotland Loves Local Gift Card scheme, is aimed at supporting local businesses. Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director at Buchanan Galleries at the new Glasgow Gift Card kiosk (Image: Supplied) The Glasgow Gift Card is one of the UK's largest local gift cards, accepted by over 1,200 city businesses, including national brands and independent businesses. Since its launch, the card has generated nearly £10 million for the city. Kevin Meechan, chief executive officer of ARRAN Sense of Scotland, said: 'The Glasgow Gift Card scheme will impact us as a local business, allowing our brand to gain additional exposure to customers, particularly among customers who are looking to support independents, and it'll also help us increase foot traffic to our Buchanan Galleries store." Kathy Murdoch, centre director at Buchanan Galleries, said: "We're thrilled to support our city in its 850th year with the introduction of the Glasgow Gift Card, making it easily available to guests at our dedicated kiosk in Buchanan Galleries." Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "The Glasgow Gift Card has been a great success since its launch, bringing over £10 million into the local economy and supporting businesses and jobs in the city." The technology for the Glasgow Gift Card is provided by Miconex, which operates more than 100 Scotland Loves Local and Town & City Gift Card programmes across the UK. David O'Neil, chief commercial officer at Miconex, said: "The introduction of the self-service kiosk at Buchanan Galleries during the city's 850th birthday celebrations is a fitting tribute to one of the city's success stories – the Glasgow Gift Card." The Scotland Loves Local Gift Card initiative is backed by Scotland's Towns Partnership (STP) as part of its wider Scotland Loves Local initiative. Nicola Hutchinson, who leads on Scotland Loves Local at STP, said: 'The Scotland Loves Local Glasgow Gift Card is a tremendous success story, boosting the city's economy by delivering real benefits for people and businesses. "Every gift card bought injects cash into Glasgow businesses."

Far right group met in Glasgow by anti-racism demo in major counter-protest
A far-right rally by "The Great British National Strike" took place on the steps of Buchanan Street in Glasgow. Dozens of police officers in Glasgow have been drafted to separate right wing and anti racism protesters. Far-right coalition The Great British National Strike organised demonstrations on Saturday across the UK, with six Scottish cities targeted, including Aberdeen, Dumfries, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glas gow, Inverness and Perth. They are led by Richard Donaldson, who opposes illegal immigration, net zero policies, and what he describes as two-tier justice, among other issues. The group gathered outside Buchanan Galleries in the city centre on Saturday morning holding union jacks and banners with the message: 'Free Tommy Robinson'. Some of the protesters were heard chanting "refugees not welcome here". The crowds were met by counter-protests from several organisations, including the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stand Up to Racism, Glasgow Trades Council, Cabaret Against Hate Speech, and the Afghan Human Rights Foundation, who called for an emergency response to the 'strike'. The anti-racism protesters who gathered could be heard shouting back "Refugees welcome here" and "Stop the far right". Tensions flared between the groups who were kept yards away from each other by police officers who held a line between them. The 'Great Strike' group posted on Facebook that multiple arrests had already been made across the UK at the rally, while urging participants to remain calm. It is unclear if any arrests have been made at demonstrations across Scotland. The Record has contacted Police Scotland for comment.

Protestors gather outside shopping centre for 'Great British National Strike'
PROTESTORS have gathered outside a city centre shopping centre for the 'Great British National Strike'. The protest, organised by what has been called a "coalition of far right groups", is part of a series of strikes set to take place in several cities across the UK from 12pm today (May 24). Organisers say they are protesting against illegal immigration, net-zero and inheritance tax, amongst other issues. The group were initially set to gather at the Buchanan Steps outside the Royal Concert Hall, however, counter-protestors are already in place there having started to gather from around 10am this morning. Those gathering for the National Strike stood near counter protestors for around 20 minutes before moving further down Buchanan Street where they were met with chants of "fascist scum off our streets". (Image: Colin Mearns, Newsquest) (Image: Colin Mearns, Newsquest) Previous plans for the National Strike to meet at the Cenotaph had to be changed due to the closure of George Square while it undergoes an extensive refurbishment. A prominent sign held at the front of the group reads "Free Tommy Robinson." Far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was jailed in October last year for 18 months after he ignored a court order not to repeat lies about a Syrian refugee who had successfully sued him for libel, the BBC reports. The Guardian reported on May 21 that he has been charged with harassment causing fear of violence against two journalists in August last year and he is due to appear a Westminster Magistrates Court on June 5. Counter protestors have also moved down Buchanan Street (Image: Colin Mearns, Newsquest) (Image: Colin Mearns, Newsquest) A post shared on The Great British National Strike Facebook page shortly before 12pm today said they were "aware that multiple arrests have been made already" at protests but did not specify where in the UK. The Glasgow Times earlier reported counter-protestors gathered on the Buchanan Steps from 10am this morning after an "emergency demo" was organised by groups including the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Stand Up to Racism. Pictures taken by Glasgow Times photographer this morning show many people standing with Palestine flags and signs with statement such as "refugees welcome, stop the far right", "stop dawn raids" and "oppose Islamophobia, defend the right to protest".
