Parkwood Unites for the Children: A Muharram Celebration of Giving and Community
The Parkwood community came together to honour Muharram, bringing joy and hope to over 2,000 children in need, fostering unity and compassion in a time of celebration.

In a heartwarming display of unity and compassion, the Parkwood community came together on Saturday, 5 July, to honour the sacred month of Muharram by giving back to the children who form the heartbeat of this resilient neighbourhood.
Held at the Sabr Mosque, this annual initiative reached over 2,000 children from the local area—welcoming all, regardless of religion or background. The mosque was transformed into a space of joy and generosity, as children gathered inside to receive food, treats, and a warm sense of belonging.
At the centre of the event was Buckets of Joy, a long-standing community project run by the mosque's volunteers. Despite operating with limited resources year after year, the team has remained enduring in their commitment to serve Parkwood's children with dignity and care. This year, their efforts received a welcome boost from Survé Philanthropies, which contributed funds to help expand the programme's reach.
'We're incredibly grateful for the support we received,' said a volunteer from Buckets of Joy. 'Every year, we do this for the kids, and having a partner like Survé Philanthropies come on board shows that others believe in the value of our work too.'

The event unfolded with an uplifting rhythm. Children were first invited into the mosque, where they engaged with organisers and volunteers who offered encouragement and friendly smiles. After short interactions, each child was given a small monetary gift along with a colourful party packet filled with treats. They then proceeded to collect hearty servings of Akni, a traditional spiced rice dish deeply loved in Cape communities.
The joy was unmistakable. Laughter rang out through the streets as children left with their parcels in hand, sharing their excitement with one another. For many families in Parkwood, where financial challenges are a daily reality, this initiative provided not just nourishment but a reminder that their community has not forgotten them.
Survé Philanthropies, known for its commitment to social development, education, and community upliftment, said the decision to support the Parkwood Muharram initiative was an easy one.
'We believe in supporting grassroots projects that are driven by compassion and community spirit,' said a spokesperson for Survé Philanthropies. 'Buckets of Joy is one such project, it reaches people where they are, and it reminds children that they matter.'
The initiative also carried a message of inclusion and togetherness. Children from all religions were welcomed and treated equally, reflecting the broader values of humanity, charity, and respect that underpin the significance of Muharram.
