Ex-Bucks County Officer Charged, Accused of Using Romance to Trick Elderly Woman into Signing Over Estate to Him

A former Bucks County police officer has been arrested and charged with trying to take control of the estate of an elderly Langhorne woman. Carlito Cortez, an ex-Langhorne police officer, is accused of using romance to try to weasel an elderly woman out of her estate. The Bucks County District Attorney's Office held a press conference Wednesday morning to announce the arrest of the former police officer on theft by deception charges. "This case is disturbing because someone in a position of trust and respect in the community, like a police officer, can never exploit that position, but this individual did just that with this victim," said Jennifer Schorn, the Bucks County District Attorney. Cortez Tricked Victim into Believing That They were in a Romantic Relationship, Got Her to Sign Bogus Will and Testament The District Attorney revealed how Cortez, who was working part-time as a Langhorne police officer, first met a 76-year-old Langhorne woman after she reported the theft of two rings valued at $25,000. Cortez's plot to defraud the woman went on for three years, during which he allegedly tricked the woman into signing a bogus last will and testament. He had also moved into the victim's home for a brief period. "He had the victim believe that he loved her, that she expressed love for him and he exploited that," noted Schorn. Cortez Also Got His Mistress Involved in the Scheme, Got Victim to Hire Her as a Caretaker Cortez, 59, who also worked part-time for Yardley police, was married and living with his wife in Richboro for 31 years. According to investigators, he also got his mistress involved in his alleged scheme. "He had this victim hire her as a care provider, her personal care provider and brought her into the victim's home to provide care when, in fact, when she was doing that she was not qualified," said the DA. After being tipped-off of Cortez's alleged scheme by a neighbor, investigators executed a search at his home and found the woman's legitimate will there. Cortez was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with theft by deception and related offenses.

LANGHORNE, Pa. - A former Bucks County police officer has been arrested and charged with trying to take control of the estate of an elderly Langhorne woman. What we know On Wednesday, there was no answer at the Richboro, Bucks County home of Carlito Cortez, the ex-Langhorne cop charged with using romance to try to weasel an elderly woman out of her estate. The DA spelled out how Cortez, who was working part-time as a Langhorne police officer, first met a 76-year-old Langhorne woman after she reported the theft of two rings valued at $25,000. For over three years, Cortez is alleged to have tricked the woman into signing a bogus last will and testament. He was also accused of moving into the victim's home for a short time. "He had the victim believe that he loved her, that she expressed love for him and he exploited that," said DA Schorn. Cortez, 59, also worked part-time for Yardley police where he was praised in a September 2018 Facebook post during National Hispanic Heritage Month. Married and living with his wife in Richboro for 31 years, investigators claim he pulled his mistress into the alleged scheme. "He had this victim hire her as a care provider, her personal care provider and brought her into the victim's home to provide care when, in fact, when she was doing that she was not qualified," said the DA. Tipped to Cortez's alleged swindle by a neighbor, investigators eventually searched his home and found the woman's legitimate will there. Cortez was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with theft by deception and related offenses. "It really doesn't get much worse than this. This defendant's actions are the definition of predatory and exploitative," said DA Schorn. The Source The information in this story is from the Bucks County District Attorney's Office.

1 of the 2 men accused of violent comic book store robbery in Bucks County, Pennsylvania sentenced

One of the two men from Michigan who pleaded guilty in March was sentenced to 10 and a half to 25 years in state prison for his role in the September 2022 violent comic book store robbery in Bucks County, the Bucks County District Attorney's Office announced in a release on Friday. Caleb James-Lorenze Simpson, 36, of Clarklake, Michigan, pled guilty to charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and aggravated assault, the DA said. Simpson will have 20 years of probation. The released said there was evidence presented by First Assistant District Attorney Edward M. Louka that included store surveillance footage showing Simpson and co-defendant, Zackery Maximus Tucker, going into the store then Simpson knocking David Schwartz, the owner of Comic Collection in Feasterville, Pennsylvania, off the ladder, following both men beating and zip-tying Schwartz. "Simpson was also shown punching the victim with brass knuckles and threatening him with a knife," the DA said. Schwartz suffered injuries, including many bruises, broken teeth, and broken ribs. The DA said Simpson and Tucker took a laptop, Schwartz' keys, cash, comic books, Pokémon cards, action figures, and other merchandise from the comic book store. Tucker, 23, of Quincy, Michigan, was sentenced to five to 12 years in state prison on March 14 for his role in the robbery, the release said. He was ordered to pay restitution of $20,029.88. The DA said Tucker was also ordered to have no contact with Schwartz or his family and the Comic Collection store. Judge Stephen A. Corr stressed the importance of community protection while addressing Simpson during his sentencing. Corr noted the deliberate nature of Simpson's actions, stating that he traveled from his community in Michigan to Bucks County specifically to commit the crime and further stressed that Simpson had multiple opportunities to halt, rethink, or abandon his plan but chose to proceed with the violent robbery, the DA said.
