Many initiatives in place to support development of Sabah's youth, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: Numerous initiatives are in place to help mould and support the development as well as creativity of the younger generation in Sabah, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. This is because children and youth play important roles in the development of the state, bringing it to greater heights at par with other states in Malaysia, the Chief Minister said. He said Sabah is in the midst of transforming various industries, be it economy, social, education and infrastructure to achieve the Sabah Maju Jaya vision. 'Therefore we need the energy, ideas and motivation of these youths to get things going the way we envision it to,' said Hajiji when officiating at the Program Perintis Muda Di Hati Ketua Menteri here, Wednesday (April 30). His speech was delivered by Sabah Community Development and People's Well-being Minister Datuk James Ratib. In committing to develop quality human capital in Sabah, the state government has allocated a total of RM75.5mil to implement 13 educational assistant initiatives, such as the Budi, Bakti, Sentosa, GRS-Subfly and Baik programmes, he said. Hajiji said the state government scholarship (BKNS) has also increased from RM51mil to RM128mil this year, so that more eligible students are able to further their education and chase after their dreams. 'The state is focused and committed to creating our future assets, so we may have competent, innovative, resilient and principled human capital,' he said. Speaking about the event, he said participating youths are trained in how to become future leaders and pioneers of social and economic changes in their communities. 'I believe through programmes like these, we will be able to create a mature, strong, academically and career excelling group of young people,' said Hajiji. He also advised against the use of substances such as drugs which could affect the overall growth of youths.

Published on: Tuesday, April 29, 2025 Published on: Tue, Apr 29, 2025 By: Johan Aziz Text Size: Hajiji (third right) with Flovia, Ellron, Jeffrey, Arthur, Robert and Safar performing the gimmick to launch the Sook Full District Upgrade in the grounds of the Sook District Secretariat Building, Keningau. SOOK: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-Pakatan Harapan (PH) government has implemented many initiatives for the (economic) wellbeing of the people but the opposition flatly refuses to acknowledge, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said the initiatives are in place and already benefiting the people, but the opposition kept harping on a 'lack of progress.' 'These claims by the opposition that the GRS-PH Plus government has not brought any development to the State are false,' he said at an event here to mark the upgrading of Sook from a sub-district to a full district, Monday. 'These are the claims of those who deny the successes brought by the Government. However, we will not keep silent, but continue to work for the development of the State and the people,' said Hajiji. He said assistance was also given to children from B40 families who successfully furthered their studies at higher education institutions. Other forms of student aid included IPT Registration Cash Assistance (Budi), the Special Examination Cash Assistance (Bakti), Computer Kindness Assistance (Baik) and special subsidy on RM800 flight tickets (GRS-Subfly) to students who studying in the peninsula and Sarawak, as well as RM300 given under the Sentosa programme for higher education. 'This is part of 13 state government educational assistance initiatives for eligible students,' he added. Hajiji said other initiatives included the construction of 3,000 units of SMJ Friendly Houses in all 73 state constituencies at a cost of RM250 million. The latest aid this year is the Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat (Syukur) programme, he said, which will benefit about 100,000 recipients through cash assistance of RM300 per month until the end of the year. On the opposition's criticism about water supply, electricity and roads, Hajiji said his government inherited those decades-old problems and was in the process of solving them. He said a total of 13 high-impact water supply development projects have been and are being implemented as long-term measures to ensure sufficient water supply in the State. Among them are the Tawau Water Supply Scheme Phase 3, Construction of the Kundasang Water Treatment Plant, Construction of the New Semporna Water Treatment Plant, Water Supply Scheme in Lahad Datu Phase 1 and Capacity Expansion of the Telibong Water Treatment Plant II. 'The project to increase the capacity of the Kogopon Water Treatment Plant (LRA) Phase Two in Papar involves works to upgrade the capacity from 40 million litres per day (MLD) to 80 MLD, which is expected to be completed in 2026,' he said. On electricity supply, Hajiji said various efforts have been made, including implementing the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project which will generate 187.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity and the Sabah Energy Council has also approved almost 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to be generated through several electricity generation projects to increase the energy needs in the State. 'The project is not only to overcome the electricity supply problem, but among efforts to provide a long-term, sustainable solution for the State,' he added. Hajiji said more developments are being brought to the State and he was recently informed that four out of 16 packages of Phase 1A of the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway project have been completed, and the remaining 12 packages are under construction, with a progress status of 81.7 per cent. 'All these are among the initiatives that we have and are currently implementing. What we are bringing has never been done before. More development will be brought to the State for the wellbeing of the people if we are given another mandate,' he stressed. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Opposition in denial about Sabah's progress under current govt, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: The opposition flatly refuses to accept Sabah's progress under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-Pakatan Harapan government, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said the opposition kept harping on a "lack of progress" but conveniently refused to acknowledge the development and economic initiatives that are in place and already benefitting the people. "We have... implemented many initiatives for the (economic) well-being of the people," Hajiji said at an event to mark the upgrading of interior Sook from a sub-district to a full district on Monday (April 28). "These are the claims of those who deny the successes brought by the government. "However, we will not keep silent, but continue to work for the development of the state and the people," said Hajiji, who is expected to call for the dissolution of the Sabah assembly before its term is completed in November. SPM top scorer from foster family background gets Mara sponsorship to further studies
TANAH MERAH: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will sponsor an outstanding student from a low-income family, Puteri Nur Ain Zulaikha Abdullah, 18, to pursue her studies either locally or abroad. Its chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Pengkalan Chepa student, who scored 9As in the recently announced Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), has been offered the opportunity due to her inspiring life story, having lived with adoptive families since she was a baby. "She was one of the recipients of Mara's Education Assistance Programme (Budi) during her two years at MRSM Pengkalan Chepa. "We also offer Mara's overseas sponsorship under the Young Talent Development programme for outstanding SPM achievers to pursue studies, either abroad or locally," he told reporters here yesterday. Asyraf Wajdi said the student and her guardian would also receive flight sponsorship from Tanah Merah Umno to attend the Budi-sponsored students gathering for SPM 2024 students who achieved straight As, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur in two weeks. "I see a strong spirit and great potential in Puteri Nur Ain Zulaikha, and with her excellent results, Mara will help her to realise her dreams," he said. Meanwhile, Puteri Nur Ain Zulaikha expressed her gratitude for the offer, which would help her achieve her dream and passion in the field of Quantum Physics. "I aspire to further my studies in Quantum Physics in Japan. My interest in this field developed after I began reading and researching the subject. My SPM results are a gift to my foster family, who have sacrificed a lot to raise me," she said. She said that since birth, she has been cared for by four different foster families. Currently, she lives with her foster brother, Mohamad Airul Roslan, 35, and his wife Nur Fatihah Saad, 26, who sells fish to support the family. "Previously, I lived with my foster father. After he passed away, I was cared for by my foster grandmother. Two years later, she also passed away. "I was then taken in by my uncle for several years until my foster brother took over the responsibility as my uncle has many dependents and his wife is suffering from paralysis," she said. – BERNAMA
