New Slayer rises as Buffy the Vampire Slayer set for revival
15-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong to lead reboot of iconic series alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar The cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer is returning to screens in a new revival that promises to honour the legacy of the original while introducing a new generation to the world of slayers, vampires, and dark forces. At the heart of the reboot is 15-year-old American actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who has been cast in the lead role as the next chosen one. Originally aired from 1997 to 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer became a groundbreaking series known for its blend of supernatural drama and sharp social commentary. Set in the fictional Californian town of Sunnydale, the series followed Buffy Summers, a teenage girl destined to battle vampires and demons while managing the everyday struggles of adolescence. The show redefined genre television and gained a passionate global following, influencing countless series that followed. The new project, commissioned by streaming platform Hulu, brings back original star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will reprise her role as Buffy Summers and serve as executive producer. Gellar's return offers a direct link to the original series, which continues to resonate with audiences more than two decades after its debut. The revival is being helmed by acclaimed director Chloé Zhao, best known for her Oscar-winning film Nomadland , with writing duties handled by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who began her career in Anne with an E and has since appeared in Firestarter , American Horror Story , and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew , will portray the next vampire slayer. Her casting signals a fresh chapter for the franchise, while maintaining the core themes that made Buffy such a cultural touchstone – female empowerment, identity, resilience, and the enduring fight against darkness. The original series is credited with transforming television storytelling, thanks to its long-form narrative arcs, layered characters, and allegorical depth. It tackled issues such as adolescence, trauma, grief, and empowerment through the lens of fantasy and horror, offering viewers both escapism and relevance. The reboot is set in 'New Sunnydale,' a reimagined setting that retains the spirit of the original while exploring contemporary themes for today's audience. Though many details remain under wraps, anticipation is high as fans await a series that aims to bridge past and present. For a generation that grew up with Buffy Summers as a symbol of strength and courage, the return of the Slayer holds both nostalgic value and fresh potential. The revival looks to be not just a continuation, but a reawakening of a story that still has much to say.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Returns As Buffy, Welcomes New Slayer Ryan Kiera Armstrong
Last Updated: Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy Summers in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, has revealed who will be playing the new-generation slayer in the reboot series. Ryan Kiera Armstrong has officially joined the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot as the 'chosen one." The 15-year-old actor will portray a new-generation slayer—seen as the spiritual successor to Buffy Summers—in the upcoming series, which marks a fresh chapter in the Buffyverse. In an exciting twist for longtime fans, Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers. Gellar, who also serves as an executive producer on the reboot, personally delivered the casting news to Armstrong during a heartfelt video call. In the now-viral clip, Gellar asks, 'Will you be my chosen one?" leaving the young actor visibly emotional and thrilled. The new Buffy series, which has received a pilot order at Disney's Hulu, remains untitled for now. According to Deadline, Armstrong's character is described as an introverted high school student—hinting at a fresh and grounded take on the next slayer's journey. Gellar told Armstrong how the team knew there was no one who could play the role better, right when they saw her audition tape. She further said she was excited to have the young actor as her 'partner on this journey". Armstrong, struggling to contain her happiness, acknowledged how 'honored" she was feeling for landing the role. Her father, Canadian actor-producer Dean Armstrong, also showed up at the scene to rejoice over the feat. Among Armstrong's notable works is her starring role on 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew'. She also played the role of Amanda Seyfried's daughter in the 2019 comedy-romance drama The Art of Racing in the Rain. It was her breakout role. She was just an eight-year-old back then. Armstrong also delivered an impressive performance in her lead role in Firestarter. Her TV debut was with a key recurring role on 'Anne with an E'. Coming back to the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, the pilot for the project has Oscar-winning winner Chloe Zhao as the director. First Published:

Buffy star James Marsters gives rare insight into friendship with Sarah Michelle Gellar
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info James Marsters, the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has given a rare glimpse into his friendship with Sarah Michelle Gellar and revealed why 'no one else would have lasted' in the role of Buffy Summers in an exclusive chat with Reach. Ahead of the eagerly awaited reboot, fans of Buffy are likely to be re-watching the 1997 series, which will see Gellar return as Executive Producer, if all goes according to plan. In the original series, penned by Joss Whedon, Gellar portrays the lead character Buffy Summers, who must juggle her normal teenage life while battling vampires, demons and other dark forces. Marsters, who joined the cast in the second series as vampire Spike, quickly became a fan favourite and a mainstay on the show. Even after decades, the stars appear to maintain a close bond, with Marsters taking the opportunity to laud Gellar as the driving force behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In a heartfelt tribute, he said: "She's amazing, by the way. I really believe that if anyone else would have played Buffy, we never would have lasted seven years.", reports Surrey Live. "Because we worked up to 20 hours a day and so there's not a lot of sleep happening, and she was in almost every scene. "I was in about a quarter of the scenes and it turned me to ash," he confessed. "I can't imagine what would have happened to my psyche if I had her workload. I think I might just have had a breakdown around season 5. I mean, anyone really would. "TV shows normally film for around 12 hours a day and that's long enough, frankly. But Sarah was always there and she never flagged, she was never late, she always had a good attitude, she knew her lines, she was a monster. "And consequentially, no one else could relax because she was always just so on point. She was amazing," he said again. Delving into their off-screen camaraderie, he shared details about how they stay in touch, discussing family milestones. "Sometimes we email each other about our kids and we'll be like, 'Oh they're doing this, they're doing that.'". "My kids are older than hers so I always beat her," Marsters joked. "She'll say, 'My kids just learned to make brownies, yay!' And I'll say, 'Well my son just got back from China,'" he continued, not concealing his amusement. Speaking of the series' revival, he expressed: "It's good because I think the world needs Buffy Summers. The world needs that message maybe more than ever." Keen not to spill any secrets regarding the forthcoming reboot, he made clear: "I'm not allowed to talk about any of it!". "I'm trying to thread the needle here..." he conveyed. "But what I will say is that at the beginning of every show we said, 'For every generation there's a new slayer.'". "And that was a promise that we never really made good on, and I think that it's high time someone did."
