'Should I Replace The Car Before I Retire?' Soon-To-Retire Driver Debates Trading In 2016 Buick To Avoid Repairs On A Fixed Income

As retirement approaches, many people take stock of their financial needs — including whether or not their car will last the next chapter of life. One soon-to-retire driver, posting to Reddit, asked a simple but important question: Should I replace my 2016 Buick LaCrosse with 138,000 miles before retirement to avoid costly repairs later? With retirement just over a month away, the driver explained they'll be living on a defined benefit pension and deferred compensation, with Social Security kicking in at 62. They weren't looking for anything brand new — just a one- to two-year-old used car with low mileage. Here's what fellow retirees, financial experts, and auto professionals say about making this kind of decision. One user suggested, "Drive your current car till it dies a death that costs more than it's worth. Then look for another used low mileage car." Others shared their own strategies. One retiree said they bought a new RAV4 for cash about a year after retiring and passed down their older Honda to their son. They emphasized the peace of mind that comes from owning a reliable vehicle with minimal maintenance costs — and no monthly payments. Financial Experts: Avoid Large Purchases on a Fixed Income Buying a car during retirement can strain limited budgets. "Most retired workers are just barely getting by on SS and some savings, maybe even an IRA, and 401(K)," Chris Pyle, a JustAnswer auto expert, told GoBankingRates. Trending: $100k+ in investable assets? – no cost, no obligation. The cost of new cars — plus insurance, maintenance, and interest if financing is involved — can quickly become burdensome. Even used cars are expensive in today's market. "It's a bad time to buy cars anyway, and new cars are often quite expensive even in good times," Scott Lieberman, founder of Touchdown Money, told GoBankingRates. "The cost usually isn't worth it." Alternatives and Strategies If your current car is running well, some commenters suggest creating a "car fund" — setting aside money monthly toward a future vehicle purchase. This way, you're prepared if a major repair becomes unavoidable, and you may be able to pay cash when the time comes. Others point out that retirees often need fewer vehicles, and alternative transportation like ride-shares or public transit can be more economical — and eco-friendly. "If you're retired, there's a good chance that you won't need an additional vehicle during your golden years," Lieberman the Best Move? Ultimately, the Reddit poster decided to keep the Buick for now, noting it's in "great shape." That mirrors the consensus from both the online community and financial experts: unless a new car is a necessity — and you can afford it without putting stress on your retirement income — it's often wiser to hold onto your current vehicle. It's not just about money. It's about peace of mind — and ensuring that your golden years aren't weighed down by unexpected expenses. New details reveal what cops say happened before police shot driver in North Miami

A new report unravels the chaos that ended in police shooting a teenager and two officers being injured. Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 17-year-old, whom the Miami Herald is not naming due to his age, and an unidentified female were parked in a stolen white Audi Q8 in the Prestige Vista apartment complex in North Miami, according to the teen's arrest report, which was released Friday. READ MORE: 2 officers, 1 civilian hospitalized after shooting in North Miami, officials say Police were hot on the trail of the stolen car, and while searching, a North Miami officer spotted it in the complex's parking lot. The officer called for backup, and soon after, his fellow officers, along with Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies, descended on the complex. One police car sped up and parked in front of the parked Audi as other officers walked up to it from the side with guns drawn with the intent of taking the teen and passenger into custody, the report read. While the passenger heeded the demands to surrender, the teen put the Audi in drive and slammed into the patrol car in front of it. An officer taking cover behind the cruiser was almost hit. The teen then turned the car toward officers to escape but slammed into a garage pillar and a parked Buick LaCrosse — deploying the Audi's airbags. While the teen was making these maneuvers, he hit a detective in the legs and back. Several officers fired their guns into the Audi. The 17-year-old was shot and taken to a hospital. The detective and another officer were also taken to a hospital for their injuries. The teen was charged with vehicular grand theft, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and aggravated fleeing. It's unclear if he was released from the hospital or is in jail.

2 Philly men arrested with $22,000 worth of drugs in Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — Two men from Philadelphia were arrested in Altoona on suspicion of drug trafficking Thursday night. Tyrone Chase, Jr., 29, and Ruben Rivera, 30, both from Philadelphia, are each charged with three felony counts for drug possession with intent to deliver. According to the Altoona Police Department, members of the Blair County Drug Task Force were patrolling downtown Altoona when they came across a Buick LaCrosse with heavily tinted windows along 17th Avenue and 14th Street. Police and K-9 Unit 'Blue' pulled the car over and found Chase and Ruben inside. K-9 'Blue' and his handler conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle and K-9 'Blue' alerted his handler for the presence of drugs. Police were granted permission to search the car and impounded it. Inside, they allegedly located a large amount of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. Police said they seized 585 individual 'Philly Bags' of heroin and fentanyl, one gram of loose fentanyl, 181 small containers of crack and $1,274 in cash. According to Altoona Police, the amount of drugs found in the vehicle are evidential of narcotics trafficking and have a street value of over $22,000. Boards murder trial moved to Anderson City Court

ANDERSON — The trial of the man charged with the 2022 shooting death of Elwood police officer Noah Shahnavaz will be moved to Anderson City Court. Carl Roy Webb Boards II is scheduled to go on trial in January on charges including murder. He faces a possible death sentence. After initially denying a request from the Madison County Prosecutor's Office, Madison Circuit Court Division 3 Judge Andrew Hopper decided Friday to move the trial to city court. In the motion, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Hanna noted the trial could take from three to six weeks. The motion states that Anderson City Court seats about 120, compared to 38 in the circuit courtroom, and notes that city court has three secure holding cells, compared to none in the courthouse. Hanna said city court could accommodate the legals staffs involved in the case and provide additional room for court proceedings. He believes that more than two alternates will be selected for the trial. The jury box of Circuit Court can seat only 14, while the city court jury box could be arranged for more than 14 people, he said. Boards was moved in April from the Miami County Correctional Facility to the more secure Westville Correctional Facility after, reportedly, stabbing a prison guard. No charges had been filed in Miami County as of Monday. Anderson City Court Judge Jason Jamerson said Monday that discussions about moving the trial from the Madison County Government Center had been ongoing. 'I'm willing to do what I can to help,' Jamerson said. 'For security purposes, the city court is a better place to have the trial.' Jamerson said details on how city court will operate during the Boards trial remain to be finalized. 'We will still have the essential services. I will work with county officials. There are hearing rooms available at the courthouse. There are a lot of reasons it makes sense,' Jamerson said of moving the Boards trial. Jury selection from Delaware County is scheduled to start Jan. 12, 2026, and the trial is set to continue Jan. 26, 2026. Boards is charged with murder in the July 31, 2022, fatal shooting of Shahnavaz. According to police, just after 2 o'clock that morning, Shahnavaz stopped a 2012 Buick LaCrosse near Indiana 37 and County Road 1100 North, and Boards, who had been driving the car, shot the officer. Police have not provided a reason for the traffic stop. Officers from Elwood and Madison County found the wounded Shahnavaz and administered life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived. Just after 2:30 a.m., Hamilton County officers found the Buick and attempted a traffic stop. The Buick continued southbound on Indiana 37. Hamilton County sheriff's deputies pursued the Buick and deployed a tire-deflation device near the area of Indiana 37 and 146th Street. Boards then surrendered without further incident.
