Football is not NFL: Wayne Rooney hits out at Tom Brady over work ethic remark

Former Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has fired back at comments made by NFL great Tom Brady, who questioned his work ethic during his short managerial stint at Birmingham returned to English football in October 2023 as Birmingham's head coach but endured a challenging spell, winning only two of his 15 matches in charge. The club slid to 20th in the Championship table and eventually suffered relegation to the third tier, leading to his dismissal. Speaking to the media about Brady's comments, Rooney stressed that such comparisons were misplaced and a minority owner of Birmingham City, voiced his concerns in the documentary Built in Birmingham: Brady & The Blues. In one widely shared clip, the seven-time Super Bowl champion admitted, 'I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic. I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that.' Rooney said Brady's assessment lacked context, pointing out that the NFL and football operate under vastly different schedules and demands. 'Tom came in once, the day before a game, when things are a little lighter anyway,' Rooney explained. 'I don't think he really understood football that well at the time — maybe he does now. But what he does understand is hard work. That's why I'm disappointed, because football is not the NFL. NFL works for three months a year, and players need rest as well.'RESPECT IS STILL INTACT DESPITE CRITICISMDespite his frustration, Rooney maintained his admiration for Brady's achievements, calling him 'one of the greatest, if not the greatest, athletes of all time.' He also acknowledged the club's recent progress, noting they have moved on players they 'needed to move on' and appear to be heading in the right their relegation, Birmingham have fought their way back to the EFL Championship, just one tier below the Premier League. Rooney said he was pleased to see the club's upward trajectory, even if his chapter there ended in disappointment.- Ends
