Healthcare workers in Kapit hailed as ‘heroes', praised for dedication to profession

KAPIT (July 16): Those on the frontline of the local healthcare sector are the true heroes, in that they remain dedicated to ensuring the well-being of the patients. This was highlighted by Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier's Department (Native Customs and Laws) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat during an event to welcome the visit by Health Department Sarawak director Dr Veronica Lugah here recently. 'The commitment shown by our healthcare workers during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic was nothing short of heroic. 'Their sacrifice had ensured the safety and well-being of our communities,' said the Bukit Goram. Nonetheless, he also stressed the importance of taking care of the healthcare workers' welfare and well-being. 'This area covers mental health, workplace safety and access to all available support systems. 'As the healthcare workers continue to do their best in taking care of public health, their welfare must also be looked into,' added Jamit. Meanwhile, in her remarks, Dr Veronica acknowledged the issues faced by the local healthcare personnel. 'I witnessed first-hand the infrastructural and logistical challenges in Kapit. 'Despite outdated facilities, space constraints and limited supplies, I must commend our healthcare workers for their remarkable spirit in serving the communities here,' she said. In connection with Dr Veronica's visit, a welcoming dinner, which also served to honour the dedication and sacrifices of the healthcare frontliners here during the height of the pandemic – namely between 2020 and 2022.
