Aussie cricket star reveals ‘humbling' career move

Next time you get a knock on your door and you're a cricket fan, you might just be bowled over. In a surprise move, Aussie cricket veteran Ben Cutting has started selling real estate, while his model/TV presenter wife, Erin Holland, has nearly finished getting her real estate license. Cutting, 38, has been working under the radar as an agent with U Real Estate in Brisbane, and already has a couple of big sales under his belt. His first transaction was a luxury apartment at 6/16 Riddell Street, Bulimba, which he sold for $3.3m, in conjunction with his colleague, Jonathan Peck. Cutting also recently sold a five-bedroom house at 3 Hurlstone Street, Wishart, for $1.885m. 'Starting afresh is quite difficult when you're competing with big brands like Place and Ray White in our area. 'I've been doing everything from cold calling, to door knocking, to letter box drops. So, does he ever get recognised? 'Sometimes. Other times I get told to f*** off; it's rather humbling,' Cutting said. As for Holland, she has one more module left to finish before she too can call herself a real estate agent — although you might not see her at an open time just yet. 'At this point in time, it's another string to her bow,' Cutting said. 'She's not going to go into sales full time tomorrow, but she might help out here and there and slowly build up from there.' It's not their first foray into property. The power couple is the driving force behind Golconda Property Group — a residential and commercial property development company. 'I'm still very much in the development side of things, but as you know, it can be a two or three-year process per project, so I've got a lot of downtime and I enjoy real estate, so it's a comfortable shift.' It comes as the cricket all-rounder puts his Cannon Hill investment property up for rent. Records show he's asking $1200 a week for the four-bedroom house at 14 Aster Street, which he bought for $525,000 in 2016. The glamorous couple are currently renovating a grand Queenslander in Hawthorne which they paid $2.86m for last year. On a 810sq m block, the early 1900s residence has six bedrooms, three bathrooms and original features such as soaring ceilings, traditional VJ boards and timber floors. 'We've nearly finished the back yard and are getting a cabana built,' he said. Cutting's demanding cricket career has been riddled with injuries, including two spinal surgeries within 18 months. But he will continue to play overseas; picking and choosing the tournaments that fit around his new work schedule.

Supreme Court dismisses appeal of Brisbane man jailed for life after torturing woman for three weeks

WARNING: This story contains content that readers may find distressing. A Brisbane man jailed for life after committing acts of "unspeakable depravity" against a woman during a three week period of "utterly brutal" torture has had his appeal dismissed. Nicholas John Crilley was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2020 after he pleaded guilty to more than 50 charges, including torture and deprivation of liberty, over the 23-day attack at a Bulimba unit. In his appeal, Crilley argued he had saved his victim's life by placing an anonymous call to emergency services. He also argued the sentencing judge had not given any mitigating effect to his remorse expressed in a letter of apology or to his guilty plea. In the letter, Crilley described the prolonged attack as a "complete overreaction" and the result of drug use. Justice David Boddice said even though the call to emergency services saved the woman's life, a sentence less than life imprisonment "would not have been just". He also found there was "no basis" to the claim that the initial sentencing failed to consider remorse, finding the letter showed Crilley was "remorseful for his predicament" rather than his victim's injuries. Justice Boddice said Crilley had subjected his victim to "extreme physical and sexual violence" that left her on the brink of death when she was discovered by emergency services. Crilley began the attack on his victim, who was aged 22 at the time, after accusing her of being involved in a targeted shooting at him. Throughout the offending Crilley had "violent, forced intercourse" with the woman, repeatedly filled a kettle with boiling water which he threw on her, and poured acetone on her legs. The woman was left with burns to 46 per cent of her body, broken facial bones and serious disfigurement. Crilley eventually made an anonymous call to triple-0, telling a friend the woman was "too hard to look after" and that he did not think he could kill her. During sentencing the court heard that first responders initially thought the woman was dead before she began to make noise. She was hospitalised for eight weeks after being rescued and was kept in an induced coma for ten days. The woman required "intense rehabilitation" afterwards including learning to walk, eat and speak again and was left with damaged eyesight and post-traumatic stress disorder. Crilley was arrested after a police chase through Brisbane's northern suburbs during which he carjacked two people and broke into a home before ramming two police cars.

Big Brother star's home destroyed by fire as his young family flees to the street - and why the TV identity ran BACK into the inferno

A former Big Brother voice-over star faced horror on Friday morning when he woke to find his Brisbane home engulfed in flames. Mike Goldman and his wife Bianca Zouppas-Goldman were sleeping in their bed with their one-year-old son Jagger when their fire alarm went off at around 4am. Goldman, 52, woke to discover his two-storey Bulimba house was on fire and quickly helped his partner and their baby escape to the street, reported The Courier Mail. 'Luckily our son was in bed with us and as you can see, his room had gone up in smoke. It was raging downstairs,' he told the publication. 'I'm feeling a lot of relief. If we didn't have smoke alarms, it would be a very different story.' Goldman said he initially thought the fire alarm went off due to faulty batteries, but was stunned to find an inferno quickly spreading through the family home instead. He and Zouppas-Goldman, 32, then grabbed their child and fled through the smoke to get to the front yard, before Goldman turned and ran back inside to rescue his dog. 'We got in to save the dog. I burnt my hair though. Got a singe on the front. He used to be white but now he's very grey,' Goldman said. Queensland Fire Department got the fire under control by 6.15am, with a spokesman saying seven crews were called to the Wordsworth St scene. 'The house was well involved in flames, everyone was accounted for. There is significant structure damage and it was contained to one house,' they said. Fire investigators will attend the scene later in the day with Queensland Police and Queensland Ambulance both on standby—though there appear to be no injuries. Goldman, who is the son of Grant Goldman and Erica Hammond, shot to fame in the early 2000s when he became the infamous narrator of Big Brother Australia. He worked on the show from 2001-2014, narrating the program, hosting his own spin-off series Up Late, and assisting with live evictions. Since pulling the pin on Big Brother, he has appeared in the Tiger King-inspired Stan Original series Joe vs. Carole and NBC Universal's Young Rock. While he hasn't reprised his role as the voice of Big Brother since it was initially axed in 2014, he has been offered plenty of voice-over work since leaving the show. He's done work for Discovery and National Geographic documentaries, and also appeared in adverts for Rebel, Telstra and Coles. Mike is the son of late television and radio personality Grant Goldman and former Channel Seven weather girl Erica Hammond. Goldman met his wife in an acting class in 2016, with the pair tying the knot in 2019 and welcoming their first child, Jagger via in-vitro fertilisation in May, 2024.

Former Big Brother Australia voice and host Mike Goldman narrowly escapes Brisbane house fire with wife and baby

The former voice of Big Brother Australia, Mike Goldman, has narrowly escaped a house fire in Brisbane's inner-east with his wife and one-year-old son. Emergency services spent two hours working to contain the blaze in the two-storey property in Bulimba, owned by Goldman, after it broke out around 4am on Friday. Two other people also escaped the home. The former media personality said he woke to the sound of smoke alarms. "It was going off because there was a fire downstairs in the garage," he said. "They don't know what [the cause was] at the moment." Goldman said he re-entered the home in an attempt to save the family dog. "It was the longest 10 minutes of my life." The narrow escape meant the family left many of their possessions inside, including mobile phones. Goldman said they relied on neighbours to call emergency services. "Just get a smoke alarm, make sure you have smoke alarms in your house, it will save your life," he said. "You just think it will never happen to you, it's crazy." Cannon Hill Fire Station Officer Mark Dutton said a fire investigation unit would examine the cause of the blaze.

Want to take a sneak peek inside a Bulimba new-build that's drawing a whole lot of Instagram interest courtesy of its sleek interior and iconic façade? Mosman will open its doors at 11am tomorrow (August 2) for half an hour, marking only the second public viewing of the property after the first inspection drew a crowd of more than 300 people. FBI Interiors owners Michael and Natalie Ajaje worked with Tim Stewart Architects and McBryde Builders to bring the epic build to life and say their vison for the home was simple. 'We wanted to build one of the best houses in Bulimba, if not Brisbane,' Mr Ajaje said. Set on an 814sq m block, the home is known as 'Mosman' and marks the latest in a series of designer properties that the Ajajes have completed in recent years. Described as their 'biggest and best' project to date, it spans three levels and has a commanding street presence due to timber cladding and white battened façade. 'The façade is very unique,' Mr Ajaje conceded. 'It's designed to set the house apart as it's a beautiful home and it deserves to stand out.' Inside, the attention to luxury detail continues, with the five-bedroom residence boasting a beach club back yard, yoga studio, roulette table, eight-car basement garage, and a bespoke circular staircase that cost an eye watering $250,000. 'It's a house with a lot of big-ticket items,' Mr Ajaje said. 'That staircase is a stunner. It's like a piece of art that you might see in the Hilton or a museum.' Featuring soaring ceilings, curves, texture and a clever use of space, the property is also designed to be functional. 'It's three levels with a lift and suits everyone from large families to professional couples and even the bachelor lifestyle,' Mr Ajaje said. Upstairs are four of the property's five ensuited bedrooms including a sprawling 120sq m master suite that's the size of an average three-bedroom apartment. It comes complete with a dressing room worthy of a Rodeo Drive retailer and an ensuite that would be equally at home in an upmarket wellness retreat. 'We've used all the tools we love,' Mr Ajaje said. 'The aim was to create something that offers easy living, is modern and on trend where there are lots of zones for people to retreat to or come together.' The central level is all about that communal lifestyle and features an open plan lounge and kitchen space leading out to the outdoor entertaining area overlooking the pool and back yard. 'People love the size of the home and that area out the back,' Mr Ajaje said. 'It's the ultimate entertainer with a beach club vibe and it's built to stand the test of time.' Downstairs, the basement area includes a games room with casino grade roulette table, a wellness space including yoga room, and a fully tiled, eight-car garage with Ferrari mural. 'The basement ensures there's parking for everyone, but it could also easily be converted to a fully standalone living space to accommodate multi-generational living,' Mr Ajaje said. 'Mosman' is listed with Sarah Hackett of Place and is located at 23 Henderson St, Bulimba. 'I'd love to see it go to a local family with younger or older kids,' Mr Ajaje said. 'It's a beautiful big house that's among the best in Brisbane right now and if you miss it, you could be waiting a long time for something similar.'
