Adolescence star Ashley Walters was 'banned from US due to criminal record'
From Top Boy to Bulletproof and Adolescence, it's fair to say that Ashley Walters is one of the shining talents in British acting today. Through sheer determination, the 43-year-old, who was born in south London, has forged a lucrative pathway for himself in the industry. Following the breakout success of Philip Barantini's Emmy-nominated Adolescence on Netflix, which starred Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, Walters is currently working on an M. Night Shyamalan supernatural thriller called Remain alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. This came after Steven Spielberg's office called him asking him to consider a role in his latest film. However, many fans might not realise that this is Ashley's first ever major role in a US movie. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Speaking to Variety, the actor shed light on his long journey to success and how he was 'basically banned' from America for two decades due to his criminal record. 'Five years ago there was absolutely no chance that I was going to be in this position,' Ashley told the publication. 'I was basically banned from the country. There were visa issues. I had a criminal record.' In 2002, Walters – who was just 19 – was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders institution for possession of an illegal firearm. Despite having already appeared on a number of TV roles, including BBC's Grange Hill, after his first acting role at the age of 10 in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Walters was known for being in the hip hop group the So Solid Crew. In the end, he only ended up serving seven months of his sentence after promising to focus on acting. He said: 'After a few years of not being able to get a visa, I said to myself, 'Well, it's not going to happen for me, I've got to make do with what I've got and fulfil my career and my destiny here in the U.K.' So I kind of stopped worrying about it.' Taking that advice, he began to build his acting profile, winning best newcomer at the British Independent Film Award for his lead performance in Saul Dibb's Bullet Boy in 2004. Other roles included Speed Racer and 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin, which was filmed in Ireland. His career then truly began to take off after the 2011 gangland drama series Top Boy, which was pulled from Channel 4 in 2014, but flourished again on Netflix five years later. View More » Now, with numerous opportunities presenting themselves to him in the States, Ashley concluded by saying: 'It's another reason why I cherish this moment so much. I want to do everything I can before someone takes away that visa on my passport.' Got a story? From prison bars to Emmy buzz: ‘Adolescence' star Ashley Walters' wild Hollywood comeback shocks fans
Ashley Walters' Hollywood breakthrough reads like a plot twist nobody saw coming. The former So Solid Crew rapper turned actor, once jailed for gun possession and barred from entering the United States, is now rubbing shoulders with Steven Spielberg and M. Night Shyamalan and he's up for an Emmy. In 2002, Walters, then 19, was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders' institution for possession of a firearm. The conviction left a stain on his career and shut him out of the American industry for years. 'I was basically banned from the country,' he admitted. While he built a name in the UK through gritty dramas like Top Boy and co-creating Bulletproof, the global stage remained out of reach. That all changed with Adolescence. The Netflix series, which became the platform's most-watched show of 2025 with 145 million views, not only catapulted Walters into awards contention but reopened doors once slammed shut. 'Five years ago, there was absolutely no chance that I was going to be in this position,' he said through tears to his close friend and co-star Stephen Graham. Now filming Shyamalan's supernatural thriller Remain alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Walters is finally living the Hollywood dream he once gave up on. Spielberg's team reportedly reached out after Adolescence, and a major new TV role is already lined up, written specifically for him. Ironically, Walters had been preparing to quit acting entirely before Adolescence reignited his screen career. He was deep into directing his passion project Animol, a film inspired by his own time behind bars. The shoot is now on hold as his acting resurgence takes centre stage. From Peckham to Emmy-nominated prestige, Walters' redemption arc is nearly unbelievable, even to him. 'It's crazy, it's nuts, it's surreal,' he said. 'Man, this boy from Peckham!'

Kim Carnes Reacts to JoJo Siwa's 'Bette Davis Eyes' Cover
JoJo Siwa is back with new of. The multihyphenate has released an official cover of Kim Carnes' classic '80s hit, 'Bette Davis Eyes,' after singing a reimagined version dedicated to her boyfriend, Chris Hughes, during her concert in London on May 26. Kim, who originally dropped the dreamy track in 1981, seemingly reacted to JoJo's cover in a since-deleted video she posted to TikTok on July 9. According to E! News, Kim shared a clip from the song's music video with a message about the factors that go into a 'quality singing performance.' 'There is a difference between singing a song.... And embodying it....' Kim reportedly wrote. 'I've always believed authenticity is what makes music timeless. I'm forever grateful to be the voice behind this one..... 'Bette Davis Eyes.'' JoJo began teasing a studio version of the cover with a slew of vintage-inspired social media posts in July. 'After performing this song live and then seeing the beautiful response to it, I decided to go record a studio vocal…. I'm undecided if I should release it on Spotify or not,' the Dance Moms alum captioned her July 7 Instagram post. In the black-and-white clip, JoJo rocks an Old Hollywood bob hairstyle while singing the tune in her signature raspy voice. The 'Bulletproof' singer was initially met with criticism on her vocal abilities (more particularly, her rasp), but Chris came to her defense in her TikTok comments section with a sweet message, writing, 'Ugh so good, you're perfect,' amid comments that likened the clip to an 'anti-smoking commercial.' Listen to JoJo's full cover of 'Bette Davis Eyes,' below.

The Sun previously contacted JoJo's rep for comment following the claims about her future with the record label. In a recent interview with Hits Radio, JoJo spoke about her new music and hinted that she was going it alone.
