Bite Club: Get a great burger at Bad Jimmy's
What's in a name? Bad Jimmy's makes a good hamburger, and Valley residents are getting more chances to try them. Catch up quick: Bad Jimmy's started as a pop-up in 2020 and opened its first brick-and-mortar burger bar on Roosevelt Row in 2023. Last week, its second location opened at Indian School and Miller roads in Scottsdale. State of play: Bad Jimmy's is part restaurant and part bar, serving smash burgers and cocktails. You can get one of several options, including a veggie burger and a decidedly non-vegetarian option topped with beef pastrami. Add chopped chilis for a couple bucks, an option I unfortunately overlooked. Best bites: The L.A. Burg with pastrami seemed a bit extravagant, so I ordered the Double Burger, featuring two patties, American cheese, griddled onions, pickles and Bad Jimmy's "not-so-secret sauce" — basically Thousand Island dressing. The burger was a classic, made well — juicy and delectable. The waffle-cut French fries were crispy and delicious.

Virginia job centers offer help to fired federal workers dealing with uncertainty after layoffs
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — With so many federal workers in the DC area out of a job, a campaign is underway to let them know there are resources ready to help. These include how to file for unemployment benefits and guidance for transitioning to the private sector. The Virginia Career Works Northern Region has released a webpage of resources for dislocated federal workers and contractors, which you can view here. David Hunn, the executive director of VCW's Northern Region, told DC News Now he had not seen a situation like this in his 44-year career. 'With news day after day of more and more layoffs from federal agencies, we're starting to ramp up,' he said. Laid off Federal Aviation Administration employee raises safety concerns Hunn said while VCW has not seen a huge number of federal workers coming in, they have seen some and are expecting more. The agency has six Northern Virginia locations in Alexandria, Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties. 'We would hope that with the resources that we have in this region, with the educational institutions, the cultural institutions, the many thousands of jobs that are available now, that there would be a reason for someone to stay in the Washington area,' he said. Among the resources VCW is offering are resume workshops, interview tips, and a caseworker to assist those who come in for help with their job search. This comes at a time when recently laid-off federal workers have to quickly figure out their next steps. 'A lot of worry, a lot of fear': DC area nonprofits feel the impact of federal worker layoffs USAID Contractor John Burg told DC News Now at a federal worker town hall in Montgomery County he is still waiting for his unemployment claim to be approved by Maryland. 'Fortunately, I'm a little bit older and I have some savings to live off of, but those are going to go quick,' Burg said. Burg explained some of his greatest concerns are protections for federal contractors, such as himself. He had worked for the past decade with USAID. 'We want to pay taxes, we want to serve the American people, but when you're sacked because of politically motivated, ideologically motivated, decisions, that hurts Americans,' he said. CJ Adamson hit a triple of her own and Burg would end the quarter with a free throw, but the visitors remained ahead 21-12. Kelsey Willems and Burg hit back-to-back layups to open the second and, in response, BSU would push the difference to 10 points at 28-18. Augustana held the Beavers scoreless for two minutes and dropped in four points, but soon gave up a 7-1 run for the visitors. Sanneh scored the final four points of the quarter for Augustana but remained behind 39-27 at the end of the half. Augustana scored the first three points of the third quarter and kicked off a back-and-forth shootout with Bemidji State. A triple from Hardy brought the difference down to single digits at 47-38 and the Vikings continued to fight to keep themselves in the game. Grant and Hardy each grabbed a bucket as Burg's layup and following free throw closed in at 53-45 with 50 seconds remaining, but the Beavers took the 55-45 lead into the fourth. Burg kicked off the final 10 minutes of action with a 3-pointer as Hayenga grabbed a steal on the ensuing possession to help put Sanneh at the free throw line. The two teams traded blows until AU rattled off a 12-2 run over four minutes of action. Another 3-pointer from Burg forced a one-point game at 65-64 with 45 seconds remaining, but trips to the free throw line for the Beavers and errors by the Vikings would end it, 70-64. The Augustana women's basketball team will hit the court once again on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day action with a 5:30 p.m. tip against St. Cloud State. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
