Frustration as Bury Market traders turn up to work without running water

Stall holders were left frustrated - while customers were turned away - as Bury Market was left without water for a 'third time in months'. Traders were greeted by the problem as they arrived on Wednesday morning (June 18), leaving some stalls unable to carry on with business as usual. Town hall bosses say the issue was caused by a leak which began on Tuesday evening and the problem was resolved by lunchtime. One trader, who asked to remain anonymous, said: 'The market office staff have been aware of the issue since 5pm yesterday, but didn't message or email any of the traders that are affected. "The market office doesn't want to discuss any compensation with traders and is getting frustrated when it's asked about. "As a food business, we need to have running water, and this is the third time in recent months that this part of the market has had no water. Office staff are expecting traders to stick around, but a lot of stalls and cafes can't run at the moment." Traders were particularly frustrated by the issue as Wednesday is a popular day for the market, with coaches bringing customers in from nearby areas. Visitors flock to the famous market, with stalls selling everything from clothes and jewellery to electrical goods, but it was at the market's food stalls and cafés where the lack of running water was a major issue. Ashley, who owns Café Loco, described how her café was unable to serve coffee and had to resort to using paper cups and plates due to being unable to wash any dishes. She said: 'We haven't been able to sell our most popular item. We have had to turn some customers away." While many stalls did not need water, the lack of toilets meant workers and customers had to walk to the nearby Millgate Shopping Centre to use the facilities there. On Wednesday, the issue was fixed by 12pm, but stall holders said they did not know how long the issue would take to fix before it was resolved. A Bury Council spokesperson said: "We discovered a water leak yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), which turned out to be coming from an old water pipe. "United Utilities came out to repair it and replaced a section of the pipe. The water was back on by 12pm."

'I copied Stacey Solomon's 59p hack to rid my bathroom of mould'

Bathroom mould is something that many householders struggle with, especially in the winter months. The damp rooms with often insufficient ventilation can quickly become a breeding ground for spores. But getting rid of the unsightly mould doesn't have to be an arduous task. READ MORE: 'My periods last as long as four months, but it took doctors seven years to diagnose me' READ MORE: 'I started working at Bury Market when I was 12 - now my business is set to make £11m' Our bathroom takes a hammering with teenagers having extra long showers and it's almost inevitable that we'll get patches of the stuff popping up from time to time. Keeping the seal clear can be the hardest part, especially when it starts to seep between the plastic and the glass. Sick of looking at it, but not having time right now to reseal the whole thing, I decided to follow a tip from the BBC One show Sort Your Life Out, presented by Stacey Solomon. It was an episode filmed in Manchester with a couple and their children, who were struggling to keep on top of things in their home. The episode showed cleaning expert Iwan Carrington sharing a 'really easy' way to remove mould from their bathroom. Spotting the mould on the bath sealant, he said: "All you need to do is get some neat bleach and then just run a line of it along that sealant." He then covered the area with cotton wool balls to keep the cleaning product in place and the following day the sealant was clean. I did exactly that, with a 59p bottle of bleach from Home Bargains and some cotton wool costing just pennies for the amount used. I put bleach on both sides of the glass seal and held it in place with swabs of the cotton wool. I wasn't convinced it would clear the patches as I'd tried several cleaning products previously - some of the containing bleach - and nothing had shifted them. But within 24 hours, this worked its magic and left my seals gleaming. We'll get round to a reseal eventually, but it's a pretty quick way to sort it and stop it getting worse in the meantime. The fifth series of Sort Your Life Out began on February 11, with new episodes airing every Tuesday night at 8pm.
