Chamber ambassadors coming back to Massena
May 29—MASSENA — The chamber ambassadors are coming back in Massena. Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce ambassadors once donned red coats and were present to welcome businesses or dignitaries to the community, and take part in grand openings, open houses and groundbreaking ceremonies. Now, the group is being resurrected. Massena Town Supervisor Susan J. Bellor told town board members that a meeting for those interested in becoming chamber ambassadors had been held on May 14 to discuss "community engagement, advertising, and celebrations locally." St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Benjamin R. Dixon said the group was starting to form. "Sue did mention that we are now having monthly meetings of the Massena ambassadors, which is kind of our boots on the ground volunteers and interested parties," he said. "I feel like we're getting a lot of traction there with them, and that I think is a big turning point for us in Massena, to have that group of engaged citizens working with us. It's a great group of people." Dixon also highlighted some of the chamber's upcoming activities for the town board. They include the annual tourism dinner Wednesday at the Freighthouse Restaurant in Ogdensburg, He said the Seaway Visitor Center at Eisenhower Lock will receive the Tourism Destination Marketing Award. "They've been a great partner this year, and they brought in 37,000 visitors since they started from all 50 state and more than 30 countries. So, it's really been quite the asset for Massena and the county, and we're excited to recognize them," he said. "We'll also be giving our Best to the Guest Award to the Best Western University Inn." Other upcoming events include the Dairy Festival June 6 and 7 in downtown Canton, Car-B-Que June 21 at Fort La Presentation in Ogdensburg, Business After Hours networking event from 5 to 7 p.m. June 24 at JJ's on the River in Ogdensburg, Massena Community-Wide Garage Sales on June 28 and 29, Canton Community-Wide Garage Sales on Aug. 2 and 3, and Craft, Food and Wine Open Air Market Sept. 20 at the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment in Madrid. He said the garage sales will include an online map on the chamber's event page to indicate where the sales are being held. Also on the schedule are a nonprofit conference Sept. 17 at the Best Western University Inn in Canton, annual dinner Oct. 22 at the GranView in Ogdensburg, and Craft, Food and Wine Holiday Market at a date and location to be announced. The 2026 calendar includes Canton Winterfest, the North Country Kids Expo, the annual membership breakfast meeting, and Massena Spring Fever Festival. Dixon said the ambassadors have been discussing ideas for the Spring Fever Festival. "Chamber events, while just one element of our extensive programming, provide multiple benefits to our members, businesses, non-profit, service organizations, and communities of St. Lawrence County," he said. "Through them, we provide networking, exposure, education, commerce, tourism attraction, and quality of life opportunities."

Chamber holds first Business After Hours
Mar. 2—On Tuesday, the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce held its first Business After Hours event at the Marriott Townplace Suites in Ironton. "It is an opportunity for people to come out and chat," said Marty Conley, director of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and the Lawrence County Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We want to give the Chamber members more of an opportunity to get together and network." He said that, while the Chamber has its monthly Fourth Friday luncheon, but "not everyone can get away at lunch. It is challenging, so this is an opportunity to come after work." Conley said they are looking to having more events at different times. "We are thinking about something in the morning, like a coffee talk or something like that," Conley said. "It is just giving our members a chance to network and show them the value of their chamber membership." He said the Business After Hours was well attended. "I'm very surprised at the attendance," Conley said. "I was concerned, since it was our first one, but the turnout has been great. We have folks from all over the Tri-State here. That's always good. I'm very excited." Besides networking, it is a chance for Chamber members to show off their businesses. "We want to showcase our business," Conley said. "That's why we are here at the Townplace Suites. Folks here in Ironton may not visit the hotel, because they live here. This gives our local businesses an opportunity to come in and see the facility, so when they have business dealings, they can refer people here." He mentioned that since Townplace Suites opened four years ago, it has won seven awards for its customer service.

Building business
Feb. 24—MOSES LAKE — It's hardly a secret that Moses Lake is growing, and that's why this year's Business Expo on March 4 will have a construction theme. "We've got a lot of construction going on," said Debbie Doran-Martinez, director of the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the show at the Grant County Fairgrounds. "We've got a new hospital underway. There's a Mexican market going in on Third Avenue ... We've got a lot of housing (construction) going on. In the industrial sector, we have Sila (Nanotechnologies) doing a buildout; we've got Group14 doing a buildout. There's lots of things happening." The theme is "Building our Economy for a Prosperous Future," and the expo promises to be a big one, taking up both the 4-H Building and the Commercial Building. There are 85 businesses coming, and last year's event was attended by more than 700 people, Doran-Martinez said. The premier sponsor, the Moses Lake Elks Club, will have a station set up for the club's youth ID program, which lets parents register information on their children for law enforcement in case a child ever goes missing or needs to be identified. Bud Clary will be the spotlight sponsor and will have vehicles all along one wall of the 4-H Building. In between there are vendors for everything under the sun, as well as food and beverages. The event coincides with the chamber's monthly Business After Hours, so pre-registered chamber members will also receive complimentary beverage tokens. The event is free and family-friendly, Doran-Martinez added. The Business Expo itself has grown over the years from about 20 booths in the early 1990s to filling two buildings the last three years, and it could grow even more, Doran-Martinez said. "We're at capacity, so I can't fit anymore into the space," she said. "So as soon as I'm turning away enough that I can fill half of another building, then we'll launch into a third building." Besides the wide range of businesses on display, there will be some fun activities, Doran-Martinez said. In keeping with the construction theme, there will be some Jenga games for attendees to play, and a blackout bingo card game. "People go around and if they visit 25 of the predetermined vendors that are on the card ... they get put into a drawing for a Skylight Calendar photo frame," she said. "That's kind of a cool, techie item that everybody can use in their household or office." An event like the Business Expo goes a long way toward fostering local commerce, Doran-Martinez said. In an age when it's easier to go online than across town, money spent at local businesses has a ripple effect. "It's critical that we shop local," she said. "If we want to have stores here, we have to support those entities. And shopping local builds our economy. It builds our quality of life. As we shop local, we pay our local taxes which benefit the municipality that offers products and services for our community ... the Amazons aren't sponsoring the Little League baseball team here. They're not donating to the Cancer Foundation. They're not doing those things that local businesses do."
