The best sweetest day of the month is almost here.
National Donut Day, a pseudo-holiday that honors the beloved breakfast pastry, occurs annually on the first Friday in June. It was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a way to honor the organization's Donut Lassies, women who traveled to France to serve donuts and other snacks to soldiers during World War I, USA TODAY reported.
Thanks to the Donut Lassies, we can all get free and discounted doughnuts this week (while supplies last) at national chains and local bakeries such as Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Busken Bakery, Servatii Pastry Shop and more.

Customers can get a free doughnut with any beverage purchase on June 6 at locations nationwide, the company said in a news release. To find a location near you, visit
Krispy Kreme is offering a dozen glazed doughnuts for $2 with the purchase of a dozen donuts at participating locations. The chain is also giving guests a free doughnut of their choice on Friday with no purchase necessary, according to a news release.

Duck Donuts is giving away free cinnamon sugar doughtnut, no purchase necessary, on National Donut Day. Customers can also purchase six cinnamon sugar donuts for $6 on June 6.
