The best sweetest day of the month is almost here.
National Donut Day, a pseudo-holiday that honors the beloved breakfast pastry, occurs annually on the first Friday in June. It was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a way to honor the organization's Donut Lassies, women who traveled to France to serve donuts and other snacks to soldiers during World War I, USA TODAY reported.
Thanks to the Donut Lassies, we can all get free and discounted doughnuts this week (while supplies last) at national chains and local bakeries such as Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Busken Bakery, Servatii Pastry Shop and more.

This year, National Donut Day is on Friday, June 6.
Customers can get a free doughnut with any beverage purchase on June 6 at locations nationwide, the company said in a news release. To find a location near you, visit dunkindonuts.com.
Krispy Kreme is offering a dozen glazed doughnuts for $2 with the purchase of a dozen donuts at participating locations. The chain is also giving guests a free doughnut of their choice on Friday with no purchase necessary, according to a news release.

Duck Donuts is giving away free cinnamon sugar doughtnut, no purchase necessary, on National Donut Day. Customers can also purchase six cinnamon sugar donuts for $6 on June 6.

Lewis County welcomes new Dunkin' in Weston
WESTON, (WBOY) — There's no better way to celebrate National Donut Day than with a free donut, and Lewis County's new Dunkin' location rolled out the dough. Friday, June 6, was the grand opening of Weston's Dunkin' location at 2900 U.S. 33. Members of the Lewis County Chambers of Commerce and local delegates came out to support franchisee Joe DeFazio in opening his 11th Dunkin' location, as it is the first of its kind in the county. Lewis County Economic Development Authority celebrates new property investment 12 News spoke with Defazio on how the location was celebrating the grand opening and National Donut Day. 'We are giving away a donut with any beverage purchase,' Defazio said. 'We are also giving away for our grand opening, we have free coffee for a year brochure while they last, we have keychains for a $1.49 medium hot or iced coffee while supplies last, plus we also are giving away a $5 gift card to anybody that signs up to me a new rewards member today.' National Donut Day glazes KELOLAND
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — While National Donut Day is a nationwide holiday, local businesses are getting a taste of it in Sioux Falls. 'It's kind of like the Super Bowl for donut shops. We definitely look forward to it every year,' said Ben Duenwald, Owner of Flyboy Donuts. South Dakota's fall pheasant outlook is 'very positive' Yonutz Donuts and Ice Cream opened in Sioux Falls last month, just in time for the occasion. The franchise has gained popularity due to its signature 'Smashed Donut' which combines a warm pressed donut with ice cream filling. At 3 p.m. Friday, the first 50 customers at Yonutz will get a free big donut, and then at 7 p.m., the first 50 people can get a free simply smashed donut. But the celebration is more than just an excuse to eat donuts. The day originates back to World War I when female Salvation Army volunteers would serve soldiers on the front lines. 'They could treat the troops in the trenches quickly by giving them something homemade,' Duenwald said. 'A ring donut is easy to cook because it's a lot of surface area. That's why there's a hole in it on it.' Duenwald says Friday's donut holiday is the biggest day for them. On Friday morning they made over 20,000 donuts in preparation, and they continue to prepare them throughout the day. Flyboy Donuts now has five locations throughout Sioux Falls and Duenwald says they've had thousands of people throughout all their locations. 'I've realized that donuts are more of the American fabric than even the hot dog or the apple pie, in my opinion,' said Duenwald. 'Everybody has a memory, a nostalgic memory with donuts or the donut shop they might have grown up with.' It will be the second site for the locally owned vegan bakery, which currently has a Rancho Cordova store. Update: The Caring Kitchen's Orangevale location will hold a grand opening June 21, according to a social media announcement from the business. The Orangevale bakery is at 9372 Madison Ave., Suite 1, in a spot previously occupied by Paisley Cafe. The Caring Kitchen's menu changes weekly and includes gluten-free and vegan items, such as cookies, cupcakes and brownies. Delaney Polidori owns the bakery. Analysis forecasts thousands of Railyards jobs An analysis released Thursday projects thousands of jobs and billions in economic impact from the Railyards development. Released ahead of a critical Sacramento City Council vote on financing infrastructure improvements for the infill site, the analysis by Stantec Inc. found the one-time economic impact from construction in the Railyards would top $8.2 billion. Across Sacramento County, Railyards development will support nearly 24,000 jobs, including 13,563 within the project footprint, according to the report. Vietnamese sandwich chain adds Davis location A Vietnamese sandwich chain is the latest tenant to join the newly redeveloped Davis Collection center, which is starting to see businesses open their doors. Three years ago, current owner D&S Development got entitlements for a project on the site with 296 apartments with 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, in an eight-story building. Surgical Care Associates renews lease in South Natomas Surgical Care Associates, a national network of ambulatory surgery centers, has renewed its lease at Citygate Plaza in South Natomas, according to MKD Citygate LLC, the building's owner. The five-story office building at 2450 Venture Oaks Way will continue to house a 3,379-square-foot administrative office for the company. The South Natomas location is not a clinical site but supports non-clinical operations tied to surgical care coordination and patient logistics.
