Yesterday, Freese took to Instagram to share his list of reasons behind his departure. Among them was that he whistled Foos anthem My Hero non-stop on tour; he could only name one song by the hardcore band Fugazi; his drumming skills were too good; he promised The Offspring axeman Noodles he could join the band as fourth guitarist, and cited his inability to grow a beard. Followers appreciated the humorous swipe at the situation, with one writing: " so much respect for you and the way you've shared this news and the humor is always spot on!" Another wrote: "I love this so much, you are a class act Freese." A third said: "Friggin awesome." The Foo Fighters, who are led by frontman Dave Grohl, have yet to publicly comment on the personnel change. Though they have since shared three new 2025 tour dates in Asia. Freese, whose other prominent gigs included drumming for Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and Devo, broke the news by writing: "Well, there it is. 'The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they've decided 'to go in a different direction with their drummer.' No reason was given. Dave Grohl's alleged 15-Year affair and secret love child 'Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. 'In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band, so while I'm not angry - just a bit shocked and disappointed. 'But as most of you know, I've always worked freelance and bounced between bands, so, I'm fine. 'Stay tuned for my 'Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters' list.' Fans of the band are speculating that Shane Hawkins, 18, will be named as Freese's replacement. The 55-year-old shares three daughters with his wife, Jordyn Blum, with their first child, Violet Maye, being welcomed in 2006. Grohl wrote at the time: "I've recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. "I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness," he continued. "We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together." It has since been revealed the baby's mom is 38-year-old rock 'n' roll fan Jennifer Young. 5 Freese said he'd never been fired from a band before Credit: Getty

There goes Foo Fighters' new drummer

Josh Freese has been the drummer for Foo Fighters for almost exactly two years, having been announced in the position back in May of 2023. (Which was, in turn, a little more than a year after the death of the band's long-time drummer, Taylor Hawkins, in March of 2022.) Now, though, he's reportedly been let go, announcing on Instagram that he was handed his walking papers earlier this week. 'The Foo Fighters called me on Monday to let me know they've decided 'to go in a different direction with their drummer,'' Reese wrote on social media, making the whole thing sound like a banal bit of corporate downsizing, and not the line-up change to a major touring rock band. 'No reason was given. : (' (Who could ever have expected The Storyteller to be so uncharacteristically un-verbose?) Freese—a veteran journeyman who's been a member of Devo, A Perfect Circle, Guns N' Roses, The Vandals, and many other bands, and performed on something in excess of 400 albums—noted that, 'In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band, so while I'm not angry—just a bit sad and disappointed.' Freese noted that he'd had a blast being a member of the band for the past two years, and ended with a joke about posting a 'Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters list.' (Also, because social media is weird, his post quickly received a comment from former Police drummer Stewart Copeland, who wrote that, 'This is lucky for the five other bands that you play with.') Freese played several touring and festival gigs with Foo Fighters, and appeared on their latest album, 2023's But Here We Are. The band has been largely radio silent since canceling gigs last year, in the aftermath of Grohl's public confession to fathering a child with a woman who was not his wife. The band announced earlier this week—just a day after the call where they fired Freese, in fact—that they'll be playing at the Singapore Grand Prix in October 2025, drummer now TBD. More from A.V. Foo Fighters give Taylor Hawkins' replacement Josh Freese the ‘boot' after two years

Josh Freese has revealed that he has been asked to leave the Foo Fighters, two years after he was recruited to replace drummer Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins died in 2022 at the age of 50. In a statement posted to Instagram, Freese wrote: 'The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they've decided 'to go in a different direction with their drummer.' No reason was given. 'Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. 'In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band, so while I'm not angry - just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I've always worked freelanced and bounced between bands so, I'm fine. Stay tuned for my 'Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters' list.' The Independent has approached the Foo Fighters for comment. Freese is an American session drummer. He is the son of tuba soloist Stan Freese and the older brother of musician Jason Freese. The 52-year-old has previously played drums for the Vandals, Devo, Guns N' Roses, Sting, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer and Sublime with Rome, among others. Freese joined Foo Fighters after the recording of their most recent album, 2023's But Here We Are, so never played on their studio records. That was the band's first album since Hawkins' death. Hawkins was declared dead at a hotel in Colombia after paramedics battled to revive him. Before his death, he had been suffering from 'chest pain.' The band described But Here We Are as 'a brutally honest and emotionally raw response' to the loss they had experienced in the preceding year. Last year, the band's frontman Dave Grohl — who also lost his mother in the summer of 2022 — became embroiled in scandal after revealing that he had fathered a child 'outside of his marriage.' In a post on Instagram he admitted to having a child with a woman other than his wife Jordyn Blum, writing: 'I've recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage.' 'I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her,' he continued. 'I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.' Grohl didn't disclose any further details about the new baby or the mother of the child.

Watch Josh Freese Rip a ‘Monkey Wrench' Solo at Last Public Gig With Foo Fighters

Josh Freese, the Foo Fighters drummer brought in to fill the vacancy left by the late Taylor Hawkins, revealed Friday, May 16, that he'd been let go from the band. Freese spent about two years with the group, much of that on the road as the Foos supported their 2023 album, But Here We Are. Freese's last proper show with the Foo Fighters came at the very end of the band's 2024 'Everything or Nothing at All Tour,' which wrapped Aug. 18 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Per usual, the setlist was packed with plenty of hits from throughout the Foo Fighters' catalog, and there were a few moments where Freese got to show off his chops. But even bigger was the furious drum solo he unleashed at the end of the Foo Fighters' performance of their 1997 classic, 'Monkey Wrench.' While the Seattle gig was Reese's last public concert with the Foo Fighters, he did take the stage with them one more time. Per the band played a private party for businessman and Anaheim Ducks owner, Henry Samueli, on Sept. 6 at the House of Blues in Anaheim (the party was referred to as 'Henrypalooza'). Unsurprisingly, there aren't a ton of videos online from the gig, but one clip finds the Foo Fighters covering a bit of Metallica's 'Enter Sandman,' while another features a snippet of the band's rendition of 'Best of You.' Freese actually would have played one more show with the Foo Fighters later that month at the Soundside Music Festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but the band ended up canceling their headlining set. This decision was made not long after Dave Grohl revealed that he had fathered a child outside of his marriage. In announcing his departure, Freese said the Foo Fighters had told him they were going 'in a different direction with their drummer.' The drummer said that 'No reason was given, adding: 'Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band, so while I'm not angry — just a bit shocked and disappointed.' A rep for the Foo Fighters declined to comment further.
