Gavin & Stacey's Ruth Jones gets award at Hay Festival

Actress and writer Ruth Jones has been awarded this year's Hay Festival medal for drama. The Gavin and Stacey co-creator was honoured in Hay-on-Wye, Powys, where she was speaking about her new novel. War Horse author Michael Morpurgo won the fiction medal, while British-Turkish novelist Elif Shafak won the medal for prose. "We are honoured to celebrate three exceptional storytellers," said Hay Festival chief executive Julie Finch, who said the three winners had "each done much to push the boundaries of contemporary writing and spread the joy of stories here and around the world". Jones, from Bridgend, writes about finding joy in unlikely connections in her new book, By Your Side. Morpurgo is one of UK's best-known children's authors, writing more than150 books and serving as Children's Laureate. Shafak's most recent novel, There Are Rivers in the Sky, is the story of three lives – in Victorian London, 2014 Turkey and 2018 London – connected by a single drop of water. The One Show: Angellica reveals why there is no Friday show Viewers of The One Show were treated to a star-studded sofa on Thursday as Angellica Bell and Roman Kemp welcomed Joanne Lumley, Ruth Jones and Alexander Skarsgard onto the programme. In the episode, Ruth Jones, well-known from Gavin and Stacey, discussed her latest book, By Your Side. ‌ Responding to a fan's inquiry regarding her choice to write in the first person, Ruth explained: "My previous three books were all written in the third person and past tense." ‌ She elaborated on her decision saying: "I just wanted to write part of this book, Linda's story, in the present tense and first person so that I could make it more of a monologue and being an actress, I could inhabit the voice." Yet, when touching on the topic of the audiobook, the star confessed she narrates using a Scottish accent. Absolutely." Ruth went on to provide insight into her novel, describing it as a tale of two primary characters whose lives are intertwined despite them never meeting. ‌ Ruth detailed: "Levi Norman lives his story set in the '80s, and Linda Standish's story is set in the present day. "Her job is to try and solve the mystery of people who die without leaving a will or without any next of kin named. Ruth explained what people could expect in her new novel (Image: (Image: BBC) ) ‌ "If that happens and you own anything, it just goes back to the crown if they don't find any next of kin and this unit actually exists, I read about it on a BBC website." Confessing her fascination with such an occupation, Ruth shared with the BBC hosts her desire to craft a character engaged in this line of work. In her novel, Ruth unfolds the narrative of her central character, Linda, who embarks on a journey to a secluded Scottish isle to unravel the enigma surrounding the recluse Welshman, Levi. The actor and writer jointly responsible for one of the most watched TV programmes in recent years, Gavin and Stacey, has said winning a Bafta was a "lovely way to say farewell to the show".Ruth Jones, who won the award for her role as Nessa in the Gavin and Stacey finale, is set to appear at Charleston Festival in East Sussex on Saturday ahead of the release of her latest novel By Your has earned multiple awards for her acting and is a Sunday Times bestselling author. She said winning the award for Best Female Performance in a Comedy on Sunday was a "really lovely way to bring it full circle after spending 17 years of my life on the show". She told BBC Radio Sussex: "I was very shocked to have won. I took my shoes off and thought I was in for the night. I had to go up on stage barefoot. "It was a lovely farewell." The Christmas Day finale of Gavin and Stacey was watched by more than 19 million people, making it one of the largest TV audiences of the the episode Jones' character Nessa finally married Smithy, played by the show's co-creator James Corden. By Your Side is her fourth novel. It is about finding joy in the most unlikely connections, and the importance of holding onto friendship and community when life gets messy. She said: "Linda Standish is a mystery solver with a difference."She tracks down people who have died who haven't left a next of kin."It is quite an uplifting story."She added: "There is quite a lot of me in Linda. The former First Minister is to appear alongside Yulia Navalnaya, wife of late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and author Maggie O'Farrell in an expanded series to be held at a venue alongside the main festival in August. It ha been suggested that the title is a nod to comedian - and close friend of Ms Sturgeon - Janey Godley, who died last year.
