Shakira Reveals the Major Hit She's Adding to Her U.S. Tour — and More Surprises
Sunday was Mother's Day, and Shakira had a ton to do — but first and foremost, she was spending time with her kids, Sasha and Milan, who had surprised her that morning with a picnic they'd organized. Later in the afternoon, the Colombian superstar would be diving into performance mode: The U.S. leg of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour kicks off in North Carolina on Monday night, making her to-do list basically endless. Speaking to Rolling Stone over the phone, Shakira shared that after the call she'd be flying straight into a fitting to try on some of the wardrobe she wears in the show — she changes into a total of 13 outfits throughout the nearly two-and-a-half-hour spectacular. Her favorite? 'I love the outfit for 'Session 53,'' she says, referring to a sheer bodysuit she wears during her hit 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.' 'It's like a second skin. It looks like AI, I'm telling you. The design is so cool: It's like the fabric is tattooed on my body, and it's so comfortable.' 'I'm going to try to add a couple of new songs, like 'Underneath Your Clothes.' I feel like a lot of my fans are probably gonna want to hear it — it's one of my classics from Laundry Service.' She has a few other surprises up her sleeves, including bringing Alejandro Sanz onstage to perform 'La Tortura' in North Carolina, and Rauw Alejandro and Ozuna in New York (she's already said that Pitbull will be joining her MetLife show in New Jersey on May 16). 'I think it's going to be very interesting and a different kind of leg for this tour,' she says. 'I'm gonna have a lot of guests, friends of mine, colleagues that have collaborated with me in the past.' Already, Shakira crisscrossed Latin America, performing massive shows in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. She had tons of surprise guests there also — Maluma, J Balvin, and Grupo Frontera among them. She says she wanted to bring an epic show to Latin America, and make sure her fans were getting a full experience. 'I learned that this is more than a show, this is a communion, an encounter with my most-loyal fans and also my newest fans. It's really a moment of total identification.… I didn't want to save any effort, I didn't want to save any resources to take the best show possible to Latin America, because I feel and I really truly believe that my people deserve the best.' In the U.S., fans can expect the same caliber of performance and emotion. (Shakira says the moment that gets her choked up the most is when she sings her Pies Descalzos classic 'Antología': 'It's the testament to this relationship that I have with with my audience.') There are also a few interludes and bits of new music she's written for different parts of the show, including a flamenco-style arrangement and a piece of a bolero. 'Who knows,' she says, 'maybe one of these songs is worth developing because they're not just music to fill in the gaps. These are heartfelt musical pieces that have been properly produced.' The tour has also coincided with the anniversary of some of her biggest hits. This year marks the 20th anniversary of 'La Tortura,' which is why she wanted to bring out Sanz. 'That was probably very one of the very few songs that played in Spanish in America on American radio,' she says. 'So, it's like celebrating after 20 years the road that we've traveled, and how many obstacles as artists we have overcome.''Hips Don't Lie,' her mega-smash with Wyclef Jean, also turned 20, which the two artists recently celebrated on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. 'It's going to be a lot different than performing live on a real big stage, live for thousands of fans,' she says. She and Jean have kept in touch over the years, last seeing each other at the 2023 VMAs, when he presented her with the MTV VMA Vanguard Award. 'I was like, 'Damn, you look good!'' she says, laughing. 'He's just the same sweet energy and so passionate about what he does, and nothing has changed.' Most of all, as she prepares to take the stage across America, she's proud to celebrate the Latino community, particularly during a fraught political era in the U.S. and in other parts of the world. 'This has always been my mandate since I started my career: I wanted to show the world what Colombians, what Latinos are about. I wanted you to fight so much prejudice that we've had to encounter throughout the years, and this moment together is a celebration of who we are, how far we've come,' Shakira says. 'I want the show to be representative of who we are as a community, especially during these hard times.' Shakira brings her she-wolf fierceness to the Toronto stop on her world tour
Shakira 3.5 stars (out of 4) Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, Mon., May 26, 2025 Her career has spanned 30-plus years, and she has the accolades to show for it, though it's been seven years since Shakira embarked on a major tour. But recent events in the Colombian singer's personal life compelled her to release her 12th studio album and return to the stage with her 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' ('Women No Longer Cry') tour, which stopped at Scotiabank Arena on Monday. Involved in a very public breakup with longtime partner Gerard Piqué, in 2023 the singer dropped 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,' a viral rap anthem whose lyric 'las mujeres no lloran las mujeres factura' ('women don't cry anymore, they cash in') struck a chord with female fans as a post-heartbreak manifesto. Now, the 'she wolf' is back on stage to reclaim her power and reunite with her pack. For her Toronto show, Shakira performed her most beloved numbers, from '90s deep cuts to recent chart-toppers. It took a bit of warming up to get there, though. After an hour's delay, a CGI Shakira avatar flashed on the video screens as the crowd, dressed in an explosion of leather, leopard skin and belly dance wraps, shrieked. Throughout the night, the avatar would serve to connect the narrative of her healing journey. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW The singer entered the arena fight-night style. Making her way to the stage, she ascended from below on a platform with two deejays, suggesting that we'd just entered Club Shakira. For the first half of the show, she served up the essence of her recent foray into electronic dance music. She came across as a polished pop persona dressed in a shimmering pink outfit, performing perfectly synchronized choreography to such hits as 'TQG' and 'Te Felicito.' Interspersed among them, alt-rock-leaning singles like 'Inevitable' and 'Don't Bother' couldn't help but seem misplaced. The second half picked up momentum as Shakira ventured into her early-aughts material, such as her billion-streaming 'Hips Don't Lie.' Placing her best-known song mid-set felt tactical as it reinvigorated the crowd. Familiar favourites were reimagined with new arrangements: 'Chantaje,' her 2017 duet with Maluma, now had a salsa beat. The remixes allowed the performer to showcase her considerable dance skills; all eyes were on her hypnotic belly dance solos. And no, those hips did not stop moving the entire show. Fake Shakira currency rained down at the Toronto concert's end. Laura Palombi She finished the concert with the breakup anthem that kicked off this new chapter in her career, as a gigantic inflatable wolf was rolled out and loomed over the stage as her protector. As she sang, 'Women don't cry anymore, they cash in,' fake currency with Shakira's face printed on it rained from above. The show closed with a wolf's head superimposed over Shakira's face on the screens, as her healing journey was complete. Let the mighty she wolf howl.

Paquita la del Barrio: Five Ruthless Songs that Captured Her Fighting Spirit
Not only did Paquita la del Barrio blaze a trail for women in música mexicana, she also rallied against the misogyny that ran rampant in the genre from the moment she stepped onto the music scene. For more than three decades, the Mexican powerhouse took down cheating men in her songs, confronting them and refusing to take any bullshit. Paquita died on Monday at age 77. Throughout her career, she never held back, and she was never afraid to unleash her vengeance. Her breakup anthems were also multigenerational, with one of her most famous songs 'Rata de Dos Patas' referenced in Becky and Karol G's smash 'Mamiii' in 2022. Paquita later offered words of advice to Shakira after she released her diss track 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,' which was aimed at her ex Gerard Piqué. 'Give it your all. The important thing is that you have your children, someone to live for and everything in life, Mija. Don't worry,' she wrote in a message. Bad Bunny also famously showed her love at the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards. More from Rolling Stone Mexican Singer Paquita la del Barrio Dead at 77 'SNL50' Played the Hits Lady Gaga Teases 'Mayhem' With Cryptic Lines: 'Choke on the Fame and Hope It Gets You High' Paquita la del Barrio songs had an indelible impact not only in música mexicana, but in Latin music broadly. Here are five of her best songs that capture the fearless spirit of the 'Warrior of Bolero.' 'Rata de Dos Patas' is Paquita la del Barrio's pièce de résistance. In the emotional ranchera song, released in 2001, she unleashed her fury at an unfaithful ex, comparing him to a rat and to vermin, and declaring him 'the scum of life.' Paquita dug in even deeper and described the guy's hardware as 'chiquito' (very small). Becky G and Karol G later alluded to the song in their breakup anthem 'Mamiii.' 'Tres Veces Te Engañe' was an anthem with a tit-for-tat message, letting a cheater know two could play his game. In the cathartic mariachi song, she let her former partner know that she had done the same to him three times over. '¿Me estas oyendo inútil?' Paquita asked him, which means 'Are you hearing me, useless man?' Paquita la del Barrio went scorched earth in the fiery 'Me Saludas a La Tuya.' While tearing her ex a new one in the ranchera song, she also took aim at her suegra (mother-in-law). 'Say hi to yours for me,' she winkingly belted, which can double in Mexican slang as another way to say 'fuck off.' Once again, she referred to her ex as an 'inútil' and later playfully revived the insult and lobbed it at Bad Bunny with a wink at the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Paquita went for the jugular in the playful 'Taco Placero,' released in 2021. She compared their disappointing sex life to an unfulfilling dinner. In Spanish, Paquita belted, 'I expected you to be a whole meal that night, but I ended up finding out you are the worst at everything / You ended up being a bland taco.' In addition to being a classic, the song also feels like the most scathing Yelp review ever. Paquita la del Barrio didn't slow down her musical output or demanding touring schedule later in life. In 2020, she teamed up with grupera queen Ana Bárbara for empowering 'El Consejo,' where she shared her advice on love. Paquita also once again invoked her iconic phrases like 'Rata de Dos Patas' and '¿Me estas oyendo inútil?' in the song that showed the sisterhood of women in música mexicana.
