Are you REAL ID-ready? Starting a week from today, every traveler over the age of 18 must present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card (or a valid passport or passport card) to board a commercial aircraft within the United States. A REAL ID is a federally approved, state-issued driver's license or ID that meets new security standards enacted by Congress after 9/11. The deadline was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting on May 7, 2025, REAL ID-compliant identification or a valid passport or passport card will be required for any adult U.S. resident to: Board federally regulated commercial aircraft Access federal government facilities or military installations Enter nuclear power plants Fortunately, you probably already have one. If you've received a new or renewed Florida driver's license or ID since January 2010, you're already good to go. Check your driver's license or state-issued identification. If it has a gold star in the top right, it's REAL ID compliant. You'll need to make an appointment at a local driver's license service center or tax collector's office if: You don't already have a REAL ID card or your existing ID is not REAL ID compliant and you aren't up for renewal before May 7, 2025 Your name has changed by marriage, divorce, or court order since the last time you got a card You'll need to bring original copies of primary documents to prove your identity, legal residence, Social Security status and date of birth. You can find the list of accepted documents here. NOTE: Birth certificates must be issued by a county health department or the CDC Bureau of Vital Statistics. Hospital birth certificates are not considered certified documents and will not be accepted. There are different document lists for immigrants, non-immigrants, and Canadians wanting a REAL ID card. No. You'll need to present identification documents in person to receive your REAL ID card, but after that, you can renew online. The fee for an initial Florida Class E license (including a learner's permit) is $48, a commercial driver's license (Class A) license is $75 and endorsements are $7 each. The fee for an ID Card is $25. Most local tax collector offices also charge a $6.25 service fee. Contributing: C. A. Hooters expected to file for bankruptcy. Will last Michigan locations close?

Hooters, the sports-bar-restaurant chain known as much for its waitresses' attire as for its food, is gearing up to file bankruptcy in a few months to restructure its debt, according to reports from Bloomberg News and other outlets. In Michigan, the chain was once widespread, but now operates three restaurants in Flint, Saginaw and Taylor. 'Like many restaurants under pressure from current market conditions, Hooters has made the difficult decision to close a select number of underperforming stores,' the Atlanta-based sports bar chain said at the time in a statement to Nation's Restaurant News. Here's what to know about the restaurant chain in Michigan. Hooters has not officially commented on its bankruptcy, although last year the company closed at least 40 locations nationwide, including four in Florida. One location, in Lakeland, was said by locals to have been the second Hooters ever opened, in 1984. Hooters first opened in 1983 in Clearwater, Florida, after six businessmen with no restaurant experience wanted to open a place they couldn't be kicked out of. Now, there are more than 420 Hooters across 29 countries. Florida remains the home to 44 Hooters, more than any other state. Texas is the closest, with 39. The chain has three locations in Michigan, including: Flint: 3415 Miller Road, 48507 Saginaw: 5538 Bay Road, 48604 Taylor: 21250 Eureka Road, 48180 The chain once had restaurants in Grand Rapids, Bay City, Sterling Heights, Port Huron (Fort Gratiot Township), Roseville, Troy and other cities. The chain also started a spinoff chain called Hoots Wings. C. A. Bridges contributed reporting. Jalen Williams is a trending reporter at the Detroit Free Press. After Helene, IRS says affected Tennessee taxpayers have until May 1 to file taxes. See if you qualify

There's some good news for taxpayers in East Tennessee. The Internal Revenue Service has granted all taxpayers impacted by Tropical Storm Helene an extension to file their 2024 taxes. Now, those taxpayers have until May 1 to file. This extended deadline is an automatic courtesy for individuals and businesses in the affected regions; there's no need to apply for it. The IRS has rolled out some additional tax relief options for hurricane survivors in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Here's what affected taxpayers can expect. Affected taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments, including: 2024 individual and business returns normally due during March and April 2025 2023 individual and corporate returns with valid extensions and quarterly estimated tax payments Anyone who lives in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi and Washington counties is eligible for the tax extension. These were the counties where former President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency on Sept. 28. The deduction is available for damaged or destroyed property not covered by insurance or other reimbursement and can result in a larger refund, according to the IRS. For residents who lost everything in the floods, the IRS will replace your tax records for free. To find your payment histories and transcripts, go to Disaster relief payments may be considered tax-free, according to the IRS. This means that affected taxpayers can exclude from their gross income amounts received from a government agency on their taxes if the money was used for reasonable and necessary personal, family, living or funeral expenses, as well as for the repair or rehabilitation of their home, or for the repair or replacement of its contents.
