NIA charge sheets three Maoist guerrillas in 2023 Kerala forest office attack

New Delhi: Three Maoists guerillas from the Kabani Dalam squad were named in the charge sheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a Special Kerala court in connection with the armed attack on the Kerala Forest Department Corporation (KFDC) office at Wayanad in 2023, said an official on Saturday. The charge sheet was filed before the Special Court, Ernakulam, against the three members of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) terrorist organisation on Friday. Those named in the chargesheet are C.P. Moideen alias Girish alias Salil alias Sajan, Manoj P.M. alias Ashique, and P.K. Soman alias Shahid alias Akbar. They have been charged under various sections of the IPC, Arms Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Kerala Forest Act, 1961 and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, said an NIA official. A total of five members of CPI (Maoist), armed with deadly weapons, had unlawfully assembled and criminally trespassed into the KFDC office on September 28, 2023, said the chargesheet. They had restrained the KFDC Manager and damaged public property and equipment using iron rods. Raising Maoist slogans, the men had also pasted CPI (Maoist) posters in the office premises, it said. After the incident, four attackers were arrested subsequently by the law enforcement agencies, and one had surrendered before the police. The NIA, which took over the case a few days later, found during the investigation that C.P. Moideen, Manoj P.M., and P.K. Sonam, along with H. S. Ravindra alias Kotehonda Ravialias alias Manoj alias Ramu and Santhosh Kumar A alias Sandhosh Kumar alias Raja, were members of the Military Wing People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) of CPI (Maoist). They had formed a local guerrilla squad named Kabani Dalam in Wayanad forests, and were actively engaged in acts of terrorism, aimed at spreading fear among the public and destabilising the government. The attack at KFDC was part of their violent anti-national agenda, the NIA said.

IPO-bound Schloss to expand ‘Leela' portfolio, enter new segments

MUMBAI : Brookfield-backed Schloss Bangalore Ltd, which will launch India's largest hospitality initial public offering (IPO) next week, plans to open seven new 'Leela' branded luxury hotels in spiritual, hill stations, wildlife, heritage and grandeur, and business categories in the next three new hotels will be built in Ayodhya, Ranthambore, Gangtok, Srinagar, Bandhavgarh, Agra, and Mumbai, as Schloss plans to expand its portfolio to 20 from 13 hotels, catering to the luxury traveller, said top company officials. Schloss, which operates 'The Leela' brand of hotels across cities, will launch its IPO on 26 May to raise ₹3,500 crore, including a fresh issue of ₹2,500 crore and an offer of sale (OFS) worth ₹1,000 crore. The three-day IPO will close on 28 May. Brookfield support 'Business has been fantastic in the last six months, and a lot of internal cash has been generated, reducing the need for a larger issue. The current net debt is around ₹2,500 crore, which will reduce to zero after the IPO," Ankur Gupta, managing partner, head of real estate for Asia Pacific & Middle East, Brookfield, said in an interview with Mint. In 2019, Hotel Leelaventure Ltd completed the sale of its hotel properties to Canada's Brookfield Asset Management for ₹3,950 crore. C.P. Krishnan Nair set up the hotel chain in 1986. The upcoming Leela IPO will be Brookfield's second public listing of a company in India. The first was in 2021, when Brookfield India Real Estate Trust (Brookfield India REIT), which comprises Grade-A office assets, was launched through an IPO. Grade A office assets means assets in superior locations, good quality and amenities, among other Leela business has been scaled up by Brookfield and aims to grow further going forward. In comparison, the supply of luxury hotels is limited. We are also launching an exclusive, members-only, by invitation club in various locations including Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai," said Anuraag Bhatnagar, CEO, The Leela. More hotel IPOs Even though analysts and bankers now perceive the primary market as less vibrant than last calendar year, the scenario for hotels and hospitality companies is somewhat different, especially with rising average individual income and a palpable desire among the country's urban youth to spend on luxury work stays and family vacations. According to the India Hotel Market Review 2024, released by hotel consultancy Horwath HTL in February, the organized hotel industry is set to add more than 100,000 rooms to surpass the 300,000-mark by 2029. For the first time, hotel chains crossed the 200,000 branded room mark, adding 14,000 rooms to India's inventory in 2024. Tanneries in Ranipet make transition to solar energy to reduce carbon footprint

From conventional firewood heating system, tanneries in the Ranipet-Ambur-Vaniyambadi region have been gradually inching towards clean energy technology especially solar power to run automatic sprayer driers, vital for drying the processed leather, in their factories to prevent pollution and save power bills. For the past few years, a group of 15-20 tannery units including Overseas Leathers, a manufacturer and exporter of finished leathers, in the SIPCOT Complex in Ranipet have been running their units especially dyeing process and finishing stage of leather products by using solar air heaters and solar hot water heaters. Earlier, these tanneries were running their units especially its heating systems with firewood, resulting in huge costs and pollution. 'Installation costs and space required for solar systems are challenges to adapt to clean energy technology by tanneries. However, in the long run, the benefits of clean energy are more stable,' said S. Gopalakrishnan, Engineering maintenance manager at Overseas Leathers. A Theni-based solar energy company, SunBest, provides technical support for these heaters. At the micro level, each drier at a leather unit consumes 20-25 units of electricity per hour. A tannery, on an average, runs at least three driers. In other words, around 600 units of power is consumed by the tannery every day. Many tanneries also depend on firewood to run driers in their units. To run driers for eight-hours a day, around one tonne of firewood is required. It costs around ₹7,500. In a month, it will cost ₹2.25 lakh to buy firewood from local vendors to run driers in tanneries. 'Except during monsoon, solar air heating panels can generate power to run driers. Government subsidy to tanneries, especially micro units, which find it challenging to afford solar powered driers, will help to promote clean energy technology to a wider audience,' says C.P. Rajkumar, CEO, SunBest. At present, the leather-making region covers Ranipet, Walajah, Vellore, Ambur and Vaniyambadi. More than 700 tanneries are located in the region, with Vaniyambadi alone accounting for around 40%. Most of the tanneries are coal or thermal energy-based factories, emitting greenhouse gases. Thermal energy accounts for around 55% of the total energy consumption for leather-making. A group of tanneries in Ranipet SIPCOT region are breaking barriers to promote clean energy technology and cut costs. Earlier in the day, Hans Raj Verma, Director General, Council of State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation of India (COSIDICI), and Ranipet Collector J.U. Chandrakala urged the leather manufacturers to go in for solar energy. They said Tamil Nadu has the highest radiation of solar energy that could be utilised for industrial growth. Clean energy champion awards for best practices in renewable energy and energy efficiency were also distributed on the occasion.
