Baker High School students create parody of Severance
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Students at C.W. Baker High School are bringing the hit TV show, Severance, to real life. They created a parody and aired the special episode last month. 'We wanted to do something to kind of put it into a school sense and make it almost relatable, but still a parody,' said Aubrey Leaton, a sophomore at C.W. Baker High School. The school's news team, Baker News (WBXL), spent an entire month writing, editing, and filming the parody. 'It was a big task. But I was happy to do it, an honor,' said Leif Donhehey, junior at C.W. Baker High School. The project put their creativity to the test. 'I did a lot of the camera work, cinematography, aligning shots, just figuring out a lot of the physical stuff,' said Evan Beckwith, junior at C.W. Baker High School. 'To get the look we wanted to, I would have to come up with unique ways to get the shots. Taking off the tripod, and like she said, standing up on the table,' said Donhehey. But it wasn't easy. 'It was difficult to pick a storyline to follow that would tell a congruent story for somebody who hasn't seen the show,' said Joseph DeRocha, senior at C.W. Baker High School. 'At first, the writing was very difficult because we did not know how to go from an office setting to a high school setting, and how to make it work,' said Kamryn Lopez-Smith, senior at C.W. Baker High School. The students are now hoping to grab the attention of the show's director, Ben Stiller. 'We put a ton of work into this, I think it came out very well, and I definitely think it's deserving of his attention, so fingers crossed, it pulls through,' said Beckwith. Baldwinsville student accused of Chromebook fire stuck screwdriver in it, fire chief says
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Baldwinsville Police Chief has confirmed to NewsChannel 9 that they've identified the C.W. Baker High School student who allegedly set a Chromebook laptop on fire. On Wednesday afternoon, May 14, students at the school had to evacuate because a laptop caught fire. It is believed by police that the student was influenced by a TikTok challenge. There have already been a handful of incidents across the state that have been traced back to the social media trend involving students short-circuiting the batteries of their Chromebooks by jamming metal objects into the USB ports. In this case, the North West Fire Chief told NewsChannel 9 that the fire was caused by a student sticking a screwdriver into the laptop. There is a possibility that the student could face a criminal mischief charge. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Baker High School in B'ville evacuated after Chromebook tampering
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A fire alarm went off at C.W. Baker High School on Wednesday after a student allegedly tampered with a school-issued Chromebook. In an announcement to parents, guardians and staff, the Baldwinsville Central School District Superintendent, Dr. Joseph M. DeBarbieri, confirmed that smoke was reported in a computer classroom and the high school was evacuated at 2:18 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. DeBarbieri says at his time the school is investigating whether the student was taking part in the 'Chromebook Challenge.' DeBarbieri says the challenge encourages students to insert lead or metal items into the USB port of their Chromebook, forcing an electrical short circuit. Local students react to cell phone ban in schools statewide
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. ( — Governor Kathy Hochul is just one step closer to banning cell phones in schools statewide starting in September. The bill has some students fired up, like Aubrey Leaton, a sophomore at C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville. 'It's personal property and it shouldn't really be decided by the state what I do with my phone,' said Leaton. The pending law will restrict cell phone use in K-12 schools throughout the entire school day. But Leaton says there are bigger problems in the school system. 'There are a lot of unsafe situations in school, and I think not being able to have a cell phone during those moments is kind of a bigger problem,' said Leaton. Not having direct contact with a parent or guardian is also a big concern for students. 'I feel like students should still be able to have it on them, at least in their bag or something. Because it's hard to get a hold of your parents and whatnot,' said Kameryn Lopez-Smith, a senior at C.W. Baker High School. But many students agree, smartphones in school are a big distraction. 'I think cell phones for a lot of people are a distraction, and you have to be very mindful. I think it's up to the student to be responsible with their phone if you have it,' said Joseph DeRocha, a senior at C.W. Baker High School. 'Especially in the younger kids this year, I'm noticing a lot of them are anti-social. They just sit on their phones all the time,' said Rey Quiroz, a senior at C.W. Baker High School. Governor Hochul says there will be exemptions in some cases, including for students with certain medical conditions or those who aren't fully fluent in English. The bill still needs to be signed into law. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
