Police Bodycam Footage Shows Corvette Factory Theft Suspect Arrest
Read the full story on The Auto Wire We covered before how on March 22 eight 2025 Corvettes were stolen from Bowling Green Assembly, but now we have police bodycam footage of one suspect being arrested. Police were able to recover Corvettes taken from the factory, but it seems the other suspects have gotten away, for bodycam footage, which was just released by Bowling Green Police Department on April 8, shows an officer chase the suspect, 21-year-old Deantae Walker as he ran away in a Lowe's parking lot. Walker and some other men called a car transport service to have a 2017 Corvette shipped to the Detroit area. However, when the driver showed up at the Low's parking lot, he found the men were waiting with three brand new C8 Corvettes. Thinking it was weird, the guy still started loading the sports cars. The men began pressuring him to work faster, and that coupled with undercarriage damage on one of the vehicles prompted the driver to reach out to police. When officers arrived, Walker started running through the parking lot, calling out to another man in a Jeep with Ohio license plates. His friend seemed to have ditched him as Walker was chased down, handcuffed, and arrested. Cops not only were able to recover the three stolen C8 Corvettes being loaded for transport, they found the other five the same day in two other locations. Sadly, we know those sports cars won't be delivered to customers and might even end up as scrap, all thanks to their being stolen. Walker's fate remains to be seen. We hope his accomplices are also caught before they can do another auto factory heist. There Are Thousands of Unsold New Chevy Corvettes at Dealers Across the U.S.
The C8 Corvette—the car's eighth generation and the first rear mid-engine Corvette—was a big deal for Chevy when it debuted in 2019, and the first C8 Corvettes demanded significant markups past its starting price of $58,900. Now that it's been a few years and the hype has died down, thousands are sitting unsold at dealers, and markups have all but vanished. Over 5,000 C8 Corvettes are currently in Chevy's inventory system, the vast majority from the 2025 model year, which means that more than likely you can go to your local dealership at this very moment and drive away with one. You'll also likely have several to choose from if you don't mind buying your new car off the lot, as most Americans do. More from Robb Report The New Mercedes-Benz CLA Previews the Marque's Exciting Electric Future Brad Pitt's New 'F1' Movie Just Got Its First Full Trailer A 400-Year-Old London Home With a 100-Foot Walled Garden Just Listed for $14.1 Million New Corvettes currently start at $68,300 for the base Stingray and in exchange you get 495 horsepower, a zero to 60 time of 2.9 seconds, and a top track speed of 194 mph. An 8-speed dual-clutch transmission comes standard and the C8 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful production Stingray ever; you might even call it a budget supercar if you're feeling generous. The prices in Chevy's inventory system even start below $68,300, with some as low as $63,185 after various offers and discounts are included. One new Corvette was even recently spotted for $58,280, according to The Drive, or less than the starting price after the C8's debut. These prices don't include tax, title, and other fees. Perhaps Chevy is also starting to feel some of the waning demand, as Chevy has spent the last several months hyping the 1,064 horsepower ZR1 version of the Corvette, which debuted last July and has since set several track records. That car starts at $174,995, and has renewed some interest in the C8 right as it gets past midlife. That's because pretty soon, all eyes will be on the C9 Corvette, which is rumored to debut sometime in 2028, and could be the first all-electric Corvette. Or the C9 could be another iteration of the internal combustion engine car that has endured for so long as an American classic, depending on where the EV pendulum is swinging then. Most likely, the C9 Corvette will be a hybrid of some sort, like the Corvette E-Ray. GM might even put in some tech it learned in Formula 1. By then, most of the C8 Corvettes on dealer lots will have moved on, though for now thousands are still there, in plain sight. Chevy Says Corvette ZR1 Still On Track, Despite Customer Concerns
The Chevrolet faithful have been excited at the potential performance of a C8 Corvette ZR1 for years — even before the car was publicly announced. That excitement surely didn't lessen when we learned the sports car would arrive with 1064 hp, and only grew after the car started popping off lap records left and right. Yet with production of the mid-engine monster slated to start soon, some buyers are seeing their excitement wane over an alleged issue with the supercar slayer's carbon fiber aero package. There's a history here: General Motors hasn't had the most successful experience with C8 Corvettes and carbon fiber hardware. Back in 2020, Stingray buyers were frustrated to learn that the visible carbon ground effects option was being axed for the entire first model year. Similar visual carbon packages were an inconsistent issue for the Z06 and E-Ray up through last year. Unfortunately, fans allege the issue isn't totally solved yet as we approach the ZR1's start of production. That's a mite problematic, as the carbon fiber High Wing Package is fundamental to the ZR1's on-track capabilities. The potential issues were first raised by the dedicated folks over at the Mid Engine Corvette Forum. Last week, a number of customers were notified that their order status had changed within GM's internal system to Status 3000, which denotes a car that has been accepted for production. This led to customers being contacted by the National Corvette Museum with details related to the optional special delivery program, as well as general dealer check-ins on the status of the cars. A number of customers went to the forum to spread word about the potential aero hangups, as dealers had informed them that the parts were constrained. There was understandable outcry from fans, with some forum users even claiming that they'd forgo their order without the aero package available. Within a few days, however, all of those cars were placed back on Status 2000, code for when GM has accepted an order, but hasn't approved it for production just yet. Chevrolet spokesperson Trevor Thompkins claims that the status change was never intended to happen at that time, which is responsible for some of the confusion. 'There's definitely a lot of excitement and anticipation around this carbon aero package in general,' Thompkins told R&T. 'So we're doing everything that we can to be ready for start of production so that we can meet customer demands for it." "And I know you're seeing some things out about the dealer order submission process and things like that. You know where the cars are at right now, at [status] 2000, that's where they're supposed to be. You may have seen some things about them jumping to [status] 3000 and coming back down. That was a glitch, essentially, in our system. So orders are where they're supposed to be. We have not started production, that's the most important part, but we're still on track for Q2, which is what we've been saying.' Thanks to the team at CorvetteBlogger, we also know that GM at one point was targeting ZR1 production weeks in Bowling Green to start as of April 28. Following the status change back to 2000, the timeline was rolled back. The site's sources claim GM is delaying the start of production in an attempt to source more high wing, to meet customer demand. 'We keep our dealers up to date as best we can, and once there's additional updates and we're ready to start producing then, of course, our dealers will be the first to know, and they'll be able to work it through with their customers,' said Thompkins. 'But that'll come, in time, when we're ready to move toward that next step.' For now, Chevrolet's official position is that everything is still on track with the ZR1. Here's hoping that the carbon fiber situation is something the team behind the Corvette can work out once and for all. In the meantime, if you happen to have a ZR1 order on the books, we'd love to hear how your experience has been, so feel free to reach out to us at pitches@ or leave a comment below. Corvette Production Pauses Spark Intense Speculation
Read the full story on The Auto Wire Production pauses are nothing unusual in the automotive industry, even at Bowling Green Assembly, but several planned pauses for Corvette production are still sparking all kinds of speculation. In fact, some of the theories being thrown around are a little out there, maybe even borderline tinfoil hat type don't know if this is a product of boredom or what. But this all started with a post on Mid Engine Corvette Forum by co-founder/admin John. He claims to have confirmed Bowling Green Assembly will close the weeks of February 24, March 17, March 24, and May 19. One member on the forum immediately conjectured the four pauses are for 'inventory control.' It's no secret automakers have been struggling to move new cars as dealers can't find buyers. Blame a slowing economy, inflation biting into people's budgets, or whatever else, this has caused some downscaling, which a production pause would achieve. But John claims that's only partially the reason. He says with many UAW workers retiring from the plant, GM doesn't plan on replacing them. Instead, it will have line workers performing more tasks at their stations, requiring training, which will take place during the production pauses. John also says physical changes to the production facility as well as components for 2026 C8 Corvettes have also made the pauses necessary. Naturally, people are theorizing all kinds of different things are coming down the pipeline. Among them is a much-anticipated C8 Corvette Grand Sport or the introduction of GM's Gen VI Small Block to the C8 lineup. Some are even saying this has to be thanks to a tariff war they see brewing internationally. During the covid pandemic, Bowling Green shut down repeatedly thanks to what GM said was supply shortages. The automaker never disclosed what component(s) triggered the production pauses. Some believe that might be what's happening again, although there's zero evidence to back up that speculation. Which is true of pretty much all the other theories. Whatever the reasons for the production pauses in Bowling Green, the C8 Corvette still remains popular enough, for now. Undoubtedly, GM has some surprises planned to keep the mid-engine sports car interesting, including the range-topping Zora, before introducing the C9 generation.
