'I had scratched my five-dollar ones, and I told her 'I'm not winning!'' Julie Bass said, according to a Tuesday, May 6, news release by the lottery. 'She says, 'Oh Miss Julie, you have two more back there.'' Bass scratched off a winning ticket, but at first thought she'd won only a free ticket, then a $1,000 prize, she told lottery officials. It turned out to be much more. 'Look at that!' said her neighbor. 'Girl, you hit the jackpot!' Bass had won $1 million on the scratcher on her 25th work anniversary, prompting her to immediately decide to retire two years ahead of schedule, lottery officials said. Crediting God for the win, Bass said she didn't feel like an exceptionally lucky person. 'I feel like I'm an especially blessed person,' she said. Bass said she also plans to buy a house near her daughter with the winnings. Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. Public's help sought in 1991 cold case with unique clues in Northern California

( — The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help with a 1991 homicide in Klamath River. The sheriff's office said that on March 28, 1991, Maye Mechling, 77, was found shot to death inside her home on McKinney Creek Road. According to the sheriff's office, Mechling was a widow who lived alone in a remote wooded area 'far removed from other residences.' She was last seen picking up mail from her mailbox at Walker Road and McKinney Creek Road on March 26 around 4:00 p.m., the sheriff's office said. A container of milk was found next to Mechling's body and a cup of black coffee was found on the counter. According to the sheriff's office, Mechling's bedroom had been ransacked but no personal property seemed to be missing. Based on the evidence, authorities believe that Mechling was killed by someone she knew and that the ransacking was staged to appear as a burglary. The sheriff's office said her gunshot wound was 'consistent with a 30-caliber type firearm.' Anyone with information about Mechling's death is asked to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Unit at (530) 841-2900 or to leave an anonymous tip line the sheriff's office's unsolved cases website. New Mountain View millionaire plans to keep on trucking after $7.5M CA Lottery Scratchers win

(KRON) — A long-time California Lottery player and truck driver said he doesn't plan on quitting his job after winning $7.5 million in the CA Lottery 2025 Scratchers game. Bay Area atmospheric river storm updates Joel McCauley confirmed he bought the winning ticket at Liquor, Tobacco & More on Rengstorff Avenue in Mountain View, a store he frequently stops in before his workday to purchase the latest Scratchers games. After scratching off his '2025 Scratchers,' he initially thought he had only won a few grand. 'At first, I thought it was $7,500,' recalled McCauley. It was only when he decided to double-check and scan the ticket again with the California Lottery app on his phone that McCauley realized he had actually won the top prize. 'I turned my truck around and took the ticket home to leave it there,' said McCauley who treated it like another normal day and casually headed into work. He said he's no newbie to winning the CA Lottery as he's won '10K a couple of times' over the 20 years he has been playing. So, what's next for the newest millionaire? McCauley said he plans to invest his winnings, continue driving his truck to work, and stop by the store to buy more Scratchers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
