New Mountain View millionaire plans to keep on trucking after $7.5M CA Lottery Scratchers win

Bay Area atmospheric river storm updates
Joel McCauley confirmed he bought the winning ticket at Liquor, Tobacco & More on Rengstorff Avenue in Mountain View, a store he frequently stops in before his workday to purchase the latest Scratchers games.
After scratching off his '2025 Scratchers,' he initially thought he had only won a few grand. 'At first, I thought it was $7,500,' recalled McCauley.
It was only when he decided to double-check and scan the ticket again with the California Lottery app on his phone that McCauley realized he had actually won the top prize. 'I turned my truck around and took the ticket home to leave it there,' said McCauley who treated it like another normal day and casually headed into work.
He said he's no newbie to winning the CA Lottery as he's won '10K a couple of times' over the 20 years he has been playing.
So, what's next for the newest millionaire? McCauley said he plans to invest his winnings, continue driving his truck to work, and stop by the store to buy more Scratchers.

She bought a $2 California Lottery scratcher at a liquor store. Now she's ‘set for life'
Two Northern California residents are celebrating life-changing lottery wins, with one now receiving a steady monthly windfall and the other cashing out in a multimillion-dollar lump sum. In March, Roseann Saporita of Santa Rosa won the final top prize in the $2 Set for Life Scratchers game, securing a payout of $4,000 per month for the next 25 years, the California Lottery announced this week. The ticket, purchased at MD Liquor & Food on Mission Boulevard, netted her a total of $1.2 million over time. According to the California Lottery, Saporita chose the annuity option, locking in the full monthly amount before taxes. Meanwhile, in May, Sabina Gharahgozloo scored a huge win from a 200X Scratchers ticket bought at Jessica's Grocery Store in Watsonville. That ticket came with a $10 million top prize. The state of California does not tax lottery winnings, adding to the windfall for both players. According to the California Lottery, only two top prizes remain in the 200X Scratchers series. The announcement comes as the lottery marks its 40th anniversary, with over $46 billion contributed to public schools since its founding.

‘A new era': Crypto billionaire's $9.4M gift funding new SFPD surveillance hub
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie thanked a local tech billionaire on Thursday for funding a new downtown headquarters for the San Francisco Police Department's Real-Time Investigation Center (RTIC). The center houses technological resources that assist police officers in the field in real-time, such as drones, automated license plate readers and public safety cameras. The $9.4 million in funding for the new RTIC space was donated by San Francisco-based enterprise blockchain company Ripple, city officials said. The company's cofounder and CEO, Chris Larsen, said the enhanced center will 'help usher in a new era of accountability.' The current location is inside the Hall of Justice and operates with 'outdated wiring and other infrastructure challenges,' according to the mayor's office. The new location is said to feature updated equipment and other enhancements donated by the San Francisco Police Community Foundation and Crankstart. 'RTIC has already supported hundreds of arrests, with crime down 30% citywide, and with this new facility, the SFPD will have the tools and the technology it needs to take this work to the next level and help our officers keep our streets safe,' Lurie said in a news release Thursday. 'I want to thank Chris Larsen for his continued dedication to our police officers and the safety of all San Franciscans.' The center contributed to more than 500 arrests in 2024, according to the mayor's office. Outgoing Police Chief Bill Scott shared similar sentiments as Larsen, calling the upgraded headquarters 'the beginning of a new era of policing in San Francisco.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
