(File) Pakistan planning to buy new air defence systems: India launched a massive strike on the Pakistan and areas of PoK, killing more than a hundred terrorists across nine terror camps. In the recently conducted Operation Sindoor, India used BrahMos missiles on Pakistan, destroying multiple airbases of Pakistan, leaving the Chinese supplied HQ-9 Air defence systems of Pakistan irrelevant. Shaken by the destruction caused by the BrahMos missiles of India, Pakistan is now planning to buy new air defence systens for countering India. Pakistan planning to buy new air defence systems In its effort to counter India's BrahMos missile, Pakistan is exploring many advanced air-defense systems including Italy's CAMM-ER and Germany's IRIS-T. While CAMM-ER offers versatility and mid-range coverage, the IRIS-T is emerging as the preferred choice due to its proven combat success in Ukraine, high agility, and infrared-guided precision—making it better suited to intercept fast, low-flying threats like BrahMos. However, its shorter range, high cost, and potential diplomatic friction with India are significant considerations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently said that indigenously developed BrahMos missiles destroyed Pakistani air bases while its air defence system, borrowed from China, remained unused, during Operation Sindoor, which exposed its lies on terrorism to the world. Addressing a function, HM Shah said while surgical strikes and the airstrike in the past were limited to the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), India penetrated 100 km inside Pakistan's border under Operation Sindoor and eliminated terrorists and their hubs, as per a report by PTI news agency. 'As our indigenously developed BrahMos (supersonic cruise missile system) worked to destroy Pakistan's air bases, its own air defence system, borrowed from China, remained unused. About BrahMos missile The Indio-Russian developed BrahMos missile is capable of hitting a range of 450–800 km with speeds up to Mach 3 with and a low radar cross-section (RCS), which proved nearly unstoppable during Operation Sindoor. This has increased the concern of the Pak Army. After facing the attack of India's BrahMos missile, Pakistan is looking for advanced air defense system to strengthen its air security. According to reports, Pakistan is currently considering to buy either Germany's IRIS-T or Italy's CAMM-ER air defense system. Interestingly, Germany has recently signed a submarine deal with India. It will be interesting to see whether Germany will give preference to Pakistan over India's friendship or not. According to Resonant's report, Pakistan is eyeing Germany's IRIS-T and Italy's CAMM-ER but it is likely that it will choose IRIS-T. The reason for this is that IRIS-T has proven its capability in Ukraine. Ukraine has been at war with Russia for many years. It has been successful in stopping missiles with the capability of Brahmos with this system. On the other hand, the range and interception speed of Italy's CAMM-ER is less than that of Brahmos. Why is Pakistan afraid of Brahmos? Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos has demonstrated tremendous capability during Operation Sindoor. This missile succeeded in penetrating Pakistan's air defense system. Pakistan has received HQ-9B and HQ-16 air defense systems from China. When India attacked Pakistan's airbase, this air defense could not stop BrahMos. This was a big blow to Pakistan. After this strategic setback, the Pak Army has decided to choose either Italy's Common Anti-Air Modular Missile – Extended Range (CAMM-ER) or Germany's Infra Red Imaging System – Tail/Thrust Vector Controlled (IRIS-T) to counter India. The CAMM-ER is a medium-range air defence missile designed for flexibility and integration with various platforms. It hits targets at ranges up to 45 km and altitudes up to 20 km, making it suitable to counter cruise missiles and aircraft. What is special about IRIS-T Germany's IRIS-T system, which is said to be Pakistan's choice, is a short to medium-range air defence system, with surface-launched variants (IRIS-T SLM/SLS). The IRIS-T SLM offers a range of 40 kilometres and can engage targets at altitudes of up to 20 kilometres, while the SLS version focuses on short-range threats (up to 10 kilometres). It uses advanced imaging infrared technology to distinguish targets from air defence decoys, making it effective against cruise missiles and drones. Thrust-vector control enables agile interception of fast-moving targets, crucial to counter the evasive manoeuvres of the BrahMos. IRIS-T SLM has demonstrated its lethality in Ukraine. This missile has intercepted more than 60 Russian missiles and drones, including the P-800 Onyx. This missile includes technical systems similar to Brahmos. In such a situation, Pakistan is looking at IRIS-T as a strong option to counter Brahmos.
