Shock as beloved TV doctor is suddenly fired from job without explanation

A highly acclaimed, Emmy Award–winning physician known for her groundbreaking medical reporting has revealed she was abruptly let go after more than two decades at CBS Boston. Dr. Mallika Marshall, a specialist in internal medicine and pediatrics who has served as WBZ-TV's prominent HealthWatch Reporter since 2000, has announced that she has been laid off, as reported by The Boston Globe. This Friday will mark her final day at the station after more than 20 years on air, she confirmed to the outlet on Wednesday. 'It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to provide reliable and credible health advice to the residents of the Commonwealth, New England, and all over the world for more than 25 years, especially now when it's needed the most!' Marshall said. 'I'm certainly looking forward to what the next chapter brings.' Marshall also informed her colleagues of the layoff on Wednesday, sending a heartfelt email that not only acknowledged her sudden departure, but also paid tribute to the people she worked with and the lasting memories she made at the station. 'Everyone has been kind and supportive and professional and that's a rare find in a workplace these days,' Marshall's email, which was obtained by the Globe, read. 'You have been like family, and I'm going to miss chatting and laughing and dancing and joking and planning and executing and reporting and broadcasting with each and every one of you,' she added. 'And don't forget who you are. You're WBZ News, dagnabbit!!! The best news station in all of New England.' With years of media experience, Marshall - who is the daughter of former ABC news anchor Carole Simpson - has also become a recognizable national figure. According to her CBS biography, she has made regular appearances on programs such as CBS Mornings and the CBS Evening News - covering a wide range of health topics including mental health, reconstructive surgery, the flu, and various forms of cancer. Marshall also served as the Medical Director for Everyday Health, one of digital media's leading sources for medical news. She hosted Dr. Mallika Marshall - a nationally syndicated health news series that aired in over 70 markets, including major cities like San Francisco, Atlanta, St. Louis, Cleveland, and Houston. Marshall is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and provides care at Massachusetts General Hospital, working at both the MGH Chelsea Urgent Care and the MGH Revere Health Center, according to the bio. During the pandemic, Marshall was on the frontlines, providing care to patients battling COVID-19, according to her CBS bio. Marshall's exceptional work has earned her numerous awards, including a prestigious New England Emmy Award for her health reporting. She was recently honored as one of Boston's Most Impactful Black Women, a testament to her influence both on and off the screen. Beyond journalism, Marshall has channeled her passion for health education into a new venture - writing a series of children's books designed to inspire young readers with engaging stories that promote healthy living. This isn't the first time the station has parted ways with Dr. Marshall - back in 2010, as her contract neared its end, WBZ claimed it no longer required a full-time health anchor and reporter, according to the Globe's earlier reporting. However, in 2014, she returned to WBZ as a medical reporter, once again contributing regular health and science segments to the station's newscasts. The reasons behind her dismissal remain unclear, and it is not yet known whether additional layoffs at the station are expected.

Chantal's remnants could fuel storms in Boston amid heat advisory, weather maps show

The WBZ Weather Team is highlighting today and Tuesday as NEXT Weather Alert days in Massachusetts. This alert is for a combination of heat and humidity as well as a threat for scattered storms fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal in the Boston area. The National Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for most of Southern New England (away from the South Coast) until 8 p.m. Monday and may decide to re-issue for Tuesday as well. If you are feeling a little déjà vu, the timing of this heat is very similar to that boiling heatwave we had a few weeks ago. That one also started on a Sunday and now, once again, many areas will reach an official heatwave this week (Sunday-Tuesday). As of this writing, Boston is inching very close to 90 today and we are forecasting another 90 degree day on Tuesday. Add in some very "juicy" dewpoints and it will feel close to 100 degrees at times this afternoon as well as Tuesday afternoon. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston Storm threat for Massachusetts Monday's storm threat is fairly low. There will just be a few isolated downpours here and there through this evening, not expecting any organized severe weather. The threat is a tad higher on Tuesday and the Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of southern New England in a "marginal" risk for severe weather. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston Tuesday's threat is partially due to an approaching cold front and also may be influenced by the departing remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal. Post-tropical Chantal While there isn't much left to Chantal at this point, it could infuse some atmospheric energy into the developing storms on Tuesday afternoon and evening. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston As is typical, we will have to watch the skies from mid-afternoon through the evening on Tuesday. Any storms that do develop could contain some very heavy downpours, frequent lightning and some pockets of wind damage. Temperatures will tumble on Wednesday and remain largely in the 70s of the remainder of the week. Each day will feature a mix of sun and clouds as well as a threat for some scattered showers.

Weather forecast maps for Boston area show storms could bring downpours today

The WBZ weather team is declaring a NEXT Weather Alert for the Boston area today. We don't expect a major severe weather day but, there will likely be some scattered downpours later in Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon and evening. The Storms Prediction Center has placed all of southern New England in a "marginal" risk for severe weather today. This is the lowest category (1 of 5) that the center issues. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston In addition, the center issued a 5% risk for damaging winds within any thunderstorms that form today. Boston weather today There could be a few widely scattered downpours as early as 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. this afternoon. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston The greatest risk comes between 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. this evening. This is when many models show a cluster of storms moving from west to east across the state. The main concern would be for some locally heavy downpours along with some occasional lightning. There is a smaller chance of some isolated wind damage or hail. Again, we do not anticipate a major severe weather outbreak today. We would urge you to stay tuned to the latest forecast and keep an eye to the sky if you have any outdoor plans this evening. Massachusetts Weather Radar July 4th forecast Looking ahead a few days to the 4th of July: For the most part, it is a near perfect weather forecast. The humidity from the next few days will be gone, leaving a very comfortable airmass in its place. The day will start with wall-to-wall sunshine and temperatures in the 70s by late morning and noon. The air well above our heads will be a bit unstable on Friday so, there will likely be some clouds popping up during the afternoon. There is a very slight risk of an isolated, pop-up shower at some point in the afternoon or evening. This is not something to necessarily focus on as the chance is very low. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston Highs will rise into the low 80s during the afternoon. For fireworks displays at night, the skies will be mainly clear, and temperatures will fall back into the upper 60s and low 70s.

Map shows "heat dome" that could raise temperatures to 100 degrees in Boston

Thursday's hot weather may have just been the appetizer. A "heat dome" developing on the East Coast could send temperatures to 100 degrees in Boston next week. After toiling our way through a difficult spring full of rainy Saturdays, summer has literally and figuratively arrived. The summer solstice officially occurs at 10:42 p.m. on Friday. Our longest days of the year and highest sun angles are here. What is a heat dome? Right on cue, a giant heat dome will be forming over most of the eastern half of the United States. The term "heat dome" is just another way of saying a large area of high pressure. This promotes sinking, warming air over a large area and will lead to numerous record high temperatures being set as well as the first heatwave for many in the Northeast. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston It's been about a year since we had a heat wave in the Boston area. In fact, we had two in 2024 - one in June and one in July, both of which lasted the minimum requirement of three days. Heat wave possible in Boston The fringe days are always the hardest to predict. Some towns could hit 90 on Sunday while others will fall short. Wednesday currently looks to top out in the mid 80s, but we can't rule out that forecast changing. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston Monday and Tuesday look like "locks" for temperatures to soar well into the 90s. In fact, we will likely challenge some record high temperatures on those two days in the city of Boston and throughout New England. Heat could set records in Massachusetts We are forecasting the record of 95 degrees on Tuesday (set in 2013) to be shattered. If we were to hit the century mark in Boston, it would only be the 28th time in recorded history and the first occurrence since 2022. It would also equal the all-time June record, set last in 2021. As of this writing, it's possible that many of our suburbs will nick 100 next Tuesday afternoon. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston We will see some "cooler" weather later next week, likely along with a chance for thunderstorms. If your occupation requires you to be outdoors and in the sunshine for long stretches of time, we urge you to be cautious next week. When the heat indices reach near or over 100 degrees, heat stroke is a real concern. Please be sure to check on those without air conditioning or ways to cool down. And of course, don't forget the pets - they get hot too.
