Only 68 words on Shivaji Maharaj in CBSE books, claim Maha MLCs

Nagpur: Maharashtra legislative council members from across partylines on Friday raised concerns over the representation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in CBSE schools' textbooks. They claimed that just 68 words about the Maratha king feature across 2,200 pages of history taught from Classes 1 to 10. The state govt responded, saying the issue has been formally raised with the Union govt and would be resolved. Raising the matter, MLC Satyajeet Tambe said it was "highly condemnable" that Shivaji Maharaj's legacy found such inadequate mention in the NCERT syllabus, which is used by all CBSE-affiliated schools. "We are promoting the NCERT curriculum across Maharashtra, yet across 2,200 pages, only 68 words are about Shivaji Maharaj. This is unacceptable," said Tambe. He added that Shivaji Maharaj's contributions should be taught not just in Maharashtra but across the country. Minister of state for school education Pankaj Bhoyar said the government was serious about the issue and had already flagged the matter to the Union education ministry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Our school education minister Dada Bhuse met the Union education minister to discuss this. History books could have been updated earlier too. Our govt has ensured Unesco recognition for 12 forts of Shivaji Maharaj, so we are serious about preserving his legacy," Bhoyar said. MLC Amit Gorkhe demanded a timeline for resolving the issue and sought greater inclusion of Shivaji Maharaj's history in textbooks. MLC Bhavana Gawali also criticised the limited mention of Shivaji Maharaj in history books, saying the state should have pursued the matter more aggressively in Delhi. "We have a pro-Hindutva govt at the Centre; this should have been resolved already," she said. Bhoyar assured the House that Maharashtra's own curriculum being developed on CBSE lines would include maximum focus on the state's historical and geographical aspects. "Since Bhavana Gawaliji has spent five terms as MP in Delhi, I will take her guidance in resolving this issue quickly," Bhoyar said.

Probe ordered into complaint of discrimination against RTE students in Barwani school

Barwani: A probe was ordered on Friday on a complaint against a CBSE-affiliated private school in Niwali tehsil of Barwani. The school allegedly did not allow poor tribal children admitted through Right to Education (RTE) sit with regular students. District Education Officer and district project convenor (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) in Barwani formed a five-member committee to investigate the complaint of rule violation and discrimination against tribal children admitted through RTE. The committee will submit inquiry report within three days. Niwali block resource coordinator Mahendra Singh Rathore told TOI that as per the complaint of 13 tribal parents of Merkhedi village, the private school run under CBSE in English medium operates from 8 am to 1 pm. The children admitted under RTE were being called to school after 1pm for the last one year. The parents said that holding separate classes in the afternoon was against the rules and it prevented students from participating in morning prayers and extracurricular activities. They also complained that the school was charging fees and then providing uniforms and books. Rathore said that the matter was reported to district project convener and other senior officials and the complaint was made to district collector, district education officer, block education officer, tehsildar, block resource coordinator, and SDMs of Pansemal and Sendhwa. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? One of the directors of the school, Piyush Sharma, told TOI, "Since the children were from rural backgrounds, they did not know Hindi or English, so the teachers had difficulty in explaining things to them. As such, their timing was separated. After the protest by the parents, they have now been made to sit with all other children." He termed the allegations of discrimination as wrong and said that the children of higher classes admitted through RTE study together.

How CBSE's Competency-Based Assessment Improves Real Learning In Schools

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a major step to improve the quality of education by introducing the Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning (SAFAL) for all its affiliated schools starting from the academic session 2025-26. This move is in line with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to shift learning from memorisation to real understanding and skill-building. What is SAFAL? Launched in July 2021, SAFAL (Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning) is a competency-based diagnostic assessment designed to help schools and teachers evaluate how well students understand key concepts. It is not a competitive or qualifying exam but rather a tool to improve teaching and learning. In 2024, over 10,000 CBSE-affiliated schools in India and abroad participated in SAFAL. Following its success, the assessment is now compulsory for students of Class 6 and Class 9 in the upcoming academic session. This means it will include students who completed Class 5 and Class 8 in 2024-25. Registration Timeline SAFAL 2025-26 School Registration is open from July 8 to July 22, 2025. Schools can register through the SAFAL portal using their LOC (List of Candidates) credentials: Why SAFAL Matters SAFAL is designed to: Evaluate real learning instead of rote memorisation. Test critical thinking, problem-solving, and application of knowledge. Help schools identify learning gaps, adjust their curriculum, and improve teaching. Keep school-level results confidential, avoiding unhealthy comparisons. Guide teacher training and improve classroom strategies. Provide insightful data for long-term planning and support. CBSE has also introduced a competency-based assessment framework for Classes 6-10 in English (Reading), Science, and Mathematics, as part of its Competency-Based Education Project. How Will Schools Benefit? Each participating school will receive: A school-level performance report showing how students performed in key competencies. Data to help with academic planning, teacher training, and resource allocation. Insights to involve parents and school communities in improving learning outcomes. The data will be used for continuous improvement, not ranking or judging. CBSE has made it clear that no special preparation is needed, and regular classroom teaching is enough to perform well in SAFAL. Moving Forward By adopting SAFAL and moving away from rote-based evaluations, CBSE aims to: Motivate the education system to embrace competency-based learning. Help students develop analytical and inquiry-based skills. Improve the overall quality of education across both government and private CBSE schools. As India transitions into a new era of education under NEP 2020, SAFAL serves as a foundation to reshape assessments and empower learners, teachers, and schools alike.
